HBO would have produced more episodes of Flight of the Conchords and the fans certainly would have watched them. But the Conchords themselves decided to stop making the show after only two seasons. You can hear some Conchord-y music in The Muppets, as Bret McKenzie wrote new songs for the film. TV series director James Bobin also directed the Muppets movie, and he assured fans that McKenzie and Jemaine Clement will return. Not on a series, but maybe a special or a movie or something.

“I’m sure,” Bobin said. “Jemaine, Bret and I are constantly in touch. We’re good friends. It’s just a question of our schedule. As everything, these answers are always about schedules. Jemaine’s in Greece, Bret’s in New Zealand and I’m in Los Angeles. I don’t know what it’ll be. I would love to do something else with them because they are good friend and we had a lot of fun making that show. I’d love to do it. It’s just a question of what it would be and when we would do it, but I’m sure because that’s what I want to make happen at some point.”

The TV series just became too hard to maintain. They were not only writing the music, but also writing the scripts and starring in the show.

“It just got a bit much for us because we were all three of us doing all the jobs basically,” Bobin explained. “I ran it like an English show where it wasn’t a huge team of writers. It wasn’t a lot of production people. It was just me directing it and writing it, them writing the songs and being in it. After a while we just couldn’t do it ourselves, couldn’t maintain it. And I didn’t want to hand it over to other people in case it got diluted. I’d rather people remember it for being great and stop doing it than have it fall to pieces in others’ hands. HBO were very nice about it. They said, ‘We’d love you to do more but we understand.’ Which is a very rare thing.”

Hey, Flight of the Conchords can reward themselves with some time off. I’ll give ‘em that. I just want more music. Albums or concerts will be fine.

“I’m sure you’ll get that,” Bobin said. “There is no doubt. Those guys love music so they will be writing song together I’m sure.”
