   Title: "Midnight Stallion"

   Grade: 2 1/2

   Director: William Dear

   Rating: Not Rated

   Runtime: 91 minutes

   Release Company: Vivendi Home Entertainment

The Flick: Okay, this is a basic "The Black Stallion" style rip off, but that’s not even "Midnight Stallion’s" major problem.  There’s a fine layer of super schmaltz throughout this one, which is surprising since the helmer is famed director William Dear.  (Yes, he of "Timerider" and "Harry and the Henderson’s!")  The heavy-handed style and purposeful going for the heartstrings vibe sadly knocks down normally amazing actors like Kris Kristofferson and Jodelle Ferland and turns them into over-emoting stereotypes.  This one is watchable and for those with no cinematic palate the drama within may be fine for you, but Dear has done better.

Best Feature: The 'Making of' featurette is a big love fest – not exactly thrilling stuff!

Best Hidden Gem: Much like "The Black Stallion" there is some very graceful shots of the horse Midnight (there were four!) doing his thing.

Worth the Moola: Need a family flick and don’t care if it has panache?  Your stallion awaits!
