'Downton Abbey' Star Lily James To Play Cinderella In Latest Disney Live-Action Remake
Downton Abbey star Lily James has been cast in the title role of Kenneth Branagh's upcoming take on the classic fairy tale "Cinderella."
Disney announced on Tuesday that the actress, who plays Lady Rose MacClare on the hit PBS TV series, will join Cate Blanchett in the live-action update of their original animated film. James beat out contemporaries Emma Watson, Bella Heathcote and Saoirse Ronan to land the role.
Blanchett is set to play the evil stepmother and Game of Thrones star Richard Madden is currently in talks to play Prince Charming. Cinderella's evil stepsisters have yet to be cast.
The Devil Wears Prada screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna wrote the script for the film, which is due sometime next year.
Disney also announced that the main character from 2013 Best Animated Feature Oscar winner Brave will officially become the next Disney Princess at a coronation ceremony which will be held at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World later next week.
Princess Merida will become the 11th Disney Princess, joining Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora ("Sleeping Beauty"), Belle ("Beauty and the Beast"), Ariel ("The Little Mermaid"), Pocahontas, Mulan, Jasmine ("Aladdin"), Tiana ("The Princess and the Frog") and Rapunzel (Tangled).
