George Cukor was known as a 'Woman's Director' and a favorite of great Female Greta Garbo, Katharine Hepburn, Joan Crawford, Vivien Leigh, Roz Russell, Joan Fontaine, Judy Holiday, Claudette Colbert. (One Female star he did not get along with was Bette Davis who held a grudge against Cukor on an incident early in Her career). Cukor was adamant in his refusal of the title 'Women's Director' but the fact remains he was most effective with Women. (See WB's 'The Chapman Report' starring Jane Fonda and see Cukor's camera angles on hunky Ty Hardin in a swimsuit). A hallmark of a Cukor film were great sets and his sense of Art Direction masterful. Cukor's great films included some footage of Gone With The Wind having been dismissed by David Selznick allegedly due to a complaint by Clark Gable that Cukor was throwing the film to Ms. Leigh.(Cukor was replaced by Victor Flemming but remained a lifelong friend of Selznick and both of Selznick's wives, Irene Mayer Selznick and Jennifer Jones.) George Cukor won the Academy Award for his direction of the WB film "My Fair Lady" starring the Audrey Hepburn, and Rex Harrison in his Oscar Winning performance. Cukor also directed Marilyn Monroe to unhappy results in the lame "Lets Make Love" and was Director of "Somethings Got To Give" when MM was fired by 20th. The footage seen today MM seems radiant and I believe the picture would have been a hit. ( The set of Somethings Got to Give is an exact replica of Cukor's home) | ||
