Sir David Lean is likely one of the top 5 filmakers of all time. Lean created several masterpieces in his great career the finest being the classic "Lawrence of Arabia" starring Peter O Toole in one of cinemas greatest performances and Omar Sharif in a star making role. Also cast were Alec Guineess and Jack Hawkins. The photography and in particular the mirage scenes are stuff of movie history, and the score by Maurice Jarre world famous. Lean worked with great stars such as Celia Johnson in "Brief Encounter" , Kate Hepburn in "Summertime", Alec Guinness in "The Bridge on the River Kwai"- in his Ocar winning performance- with William Holden, and one of the great romantic dramas of all time MGM's "Doctor Zhivago" starring Omar Shariff in the title role and Julie Christie in a great performance as Lara. The scene where Ms Christie sees Dr. Zhivago (Sharif) after many years is screen acting at its greatest. Zhivago is also known for its lush romantic score. Lean had a great relationship with master producer Sam Spiegel and together they filmed "Lawrence" and "Bridge on the River Kwai" at Columbia- both film classics and both Oscar winners. Lean's production of "Ryan's Daughter" with Robert Mitchum and Christopher Jones at MGM failed Lean's last film was he acclaimed Oscar nominated " A Passage to India" with Guiness for Columbia. In addition to his Oscars, Lean was deservedly honored by the AFI. Sony has named a building after Lean on the Sony-Columbia Lot | ||
