London was popping on Wednesday night as singers turned out for the annual BRIT Awards. Rock group Muse kicked off the show with a pyrotechnic-packed performance of their anthem "Supremacy."

Scottish singer Emeli Sande scooped up two prizes: "British Female Solo Artist" and "British Album" for "Our Version Of Events." The singer told the crowd after accepting her first trophy from presenter Taylor Swift: "Wow this feels amazing. This is incredible." She later called herself "a very unlikely pop star."

Singer-songwriter Ben Howard also won two awards: "British Breakthrough Act" and "British Male Solo Artist."

Adele won "British Single" for her Bond theme "Skyfall" but was unable to attend the event. She's currently in Los Angeles rehearsing for the Academy Awards on Sunday.

Coldplay won the "British Live Act" award, although singer Chris Martin was a no show. Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl accepted the "International Group" prize for The Black Keys, who also skipped the event.

Performers included One Direction, who debuted their new charity single "One Way or Another (Teenage Kicks)," a mash-up of Blondie's hit and Teenage Kicks by The Undertones, by performing on top of a giant pinball machine. The massively popular boy band took home a special new prize, "Global Success Award."

Taylor Swift performed a highly theatrical rendition of her song "I Knew You Were Trouble," wearing a long, flowing white gown which was ripped off to reveal a racy and revealing black number underneath.

Justin Timberlake also sang during the show, along with Robbie Williams, Mumford & Sons and Sande, who closed the show with a medley of hits.
