So does Shout! Factory finally add a little cool to the early captain? We’re gonna see as we check out the new to Blu-ray 1992 version of "Captain America - Collector's Edition" out May 21. Follow the shield reviewed below!
Cast: Matt Salinger, Ronny Cox, Scott Paulin
Director: Albert Pyun
Runtime: 97 minutes
Release Company: Shout Factory! Home Entertainment
The Flick: I’ll refer to my former review of this one - Albert Pyun, the Charles Band of his day, was the helmer on this early 1990 version of "Captain America" – and it shows. From the cheese-ridden hair and clothes (the suit really is a spandex nightmare!) to the genre casting (Ronny Cox and Ned Beatty add a "Robocop" and "Superman"-esk vibe to the flick!) this one is a pure exercise is 80’s excess. Thankfully looks and not for show man of the hour Matt Salinger’s wooden as a board routine is eclipsed by some seriously cool scene chewing by baddie Scott 'Red Skull' Paulin as his disturbing foe. Forget red, white and blue – skull is my new favorite color.
Best Feature: So unlike the bare bones Fox DVD release version of this one, Shout! Factory has the single feature 'Looking Back with Albert and Matt' which does provide some interesting tidbits. (Pyun seems less then enthusiastic!) Would have loved some much desired Paulin chat, but this does add some class to the Collector’s Edition.
Best Hidden Gem: Again the power of the Paulin.
Worth the Moola: For sheer cheese and a desire to see anything "Captain America," possibly - but only for that sweet little Italian boy with a rosy complexion!
