5 TV Shows For Your 'Game Of Thrones' Withdrawal
Admit it, you have Game of Thrones withdrawal. It's OK, we're not judging you here at Starpulse, mainly because we're in the same boat! We miss Game of Thrones as much as you do, and the idea of waiting for season 5 when it airs sometime around April 2015, well, is tearing us up inside. After four years of investing our time, patience, love, hate and endless fan chatter about the characters of Game of Thrones, to have them snatched away from us yet again is genuinely cruel.

However, there is hope! While you may have to wait just under a year until you get your Game of Thrones fix, there ...

'Vikings' Season 2 Finale Review: Satisfying, Surprising & Superb

May 2nd, 2014 10:08am EDT
Vikings
A thoroughly satisfying Vikings Season 2 finale, the surprising course of which had me fooled until the truth was revealed.

I admit I fell completely for Floki casting his lot with Horick. The scenes in which Floki was complaining to his woman about Ragnar were convincing. I guess Floki felt the way he could be completely believable in his betrayal of Ragnar was to go through all the motions of the building betrayal, even in private conversations with the mother of his child.

The first indication that Floki was up to something else was Rollo's reaction to the mushrooms Floki gave him. I t...

'Vikings' Season 2 Episode 9: Great Post-Apocalyptic Narrative

April 26th, 2014 2:45pm EDT
Vikings
My favorite scene in Vikings 2.9 was at the very beginning, where Althestan reads Ecbert some Roman military strategy, and concludes with, and there "the fragment ends". What a perfect picture of a post-apocalyptic culture, reliant on just shards of the previous civilization. It's a scene that many a science fiction narrative has tried to present - like in the George Pal 1960 movie of H. G. Wells' The Time Machine - but none has done it better than Vikings, and its focus on a Britain struggling to recover some of the store of knowledge fleetingly left to it by the departed Romans.

My sec...

'Vikings' 2.7: Volatile Mix

April 11th, 2014 5:56pm EDT
Vikings
A rather grim Vikings 2.7 last night, featuring the slow death Ragnar metes out to Jarl Borg at the end. Not only do I think Ragnar might have been wise to include Jarl Borg on his next trip to England, but I found the death scene, well, off-putting. For all I know, this is indeed the way the Norsmen put certain kinds of enemies to death, but I would have been fine not to see this in such stomach-turning detail.

Also unfortunate is the souring of Ragnar's relationship with Floki. Yeah, I know the master shipbuilder is somewhat out of his mind, but his distrust of Ragnar seems unmotivate...

'Vikings' Season 2 Episode 6: The Guardians

April 4th, 2014 1:37pm EDT
Vikings
The best scene in Vikings 2.6 for me - the one which had the greatest historical resonance - was Ecbert and Athelstan looking at and discussing the ancient Roman art work and scrolls, an apex of human accomplishment at the time, that the Romans left behind in Britain. In a world before printing, the handwritten manuscript was the tenuous ambassador from the past, easily lost if not deliberately destroyed. This is what made that scene so significant, and what motivated me to write Unburning Alexandria. Rooms such as the one that contained Ecbert and Athelstan and the Roman works saved e...

'Hercules' Actress Gaia Weiss Joins History's 'Vikings'

'Hercules' Actress Gaia Weiss Joins History's 'Vikings'
The sizeable ensemble of History's Vikings is about to add another member. Tonight, actress Gaia Weiss joins History's scripted series as Porunn, the slave who becomes a love interest for Ragnar's son Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig). We connected with Gaia last week to discuss what it was like for her to come aboard in the middle of the epic second season.

"What I really liked in Vikings in general is that female characters are strong and really interesting to play. They're complex characters," Gaia, who previously appeared in The Legend of Hercules with Kellen Lutz, told us. "Because it's my fir...

'Vikings' Season 2 Episode 5: Caught in the Middle

'Vikings' Season 2 Episode 5: Caught in the Middle
Vikings 2.5 was a satisfying episode on the domestic front. As expected, Ragnar beat Jarl Borg. In the battle and aftermath, Rollo had a chance to demonstrate his life-and-death loyalty and value to his brother, and Bjorn got what we wanted - a continuing place with his father. Not expected was Ragnar first not killing Jarl, and then, based on the coming attractions, recruiting him for the return trip to Wessex in England.

And so the balance tips back to the conflict between Norse and English cultures, which is the part of the series I like best. We already know that Ecbert will be th...

'Vikings' Season 2 Episode 4: Wise King

March 21st, 2014 4:52pm EDT
Vikings
Excellent Vikings 2.4 last night, which brought together and moved forward crucial elements of the story, in both locales.

In England, it was good to see more of the wisdom of Ecbert, the Wessex king. He's the best strategic match for Ragnar we've seen so far in the series, in either England of Scandinavia. One question occurred to me: was it always the King's plan to surprise attack the Norsemen, or did that occur only after Ragnar broke his bargain, and left England with no notice? Very likely the latter, but it's a measure of Ecbert's cleverness than you don't quite know, for sure.

'Vikings' Star Linus Roache Rules The World

'Vikings' Star Linus Roache Rules The World
Linus Roache is ruling the world.

Well, maybe not the entire world. But tonight, he joins History's Vikings as King Ecbert, ruler of Wessex, the largest of England's five kingdoms. And when it comes to the acting world, he's most definitely one of its true titans. You'd be hard-pressed to find an actor who brings as much intensity to each and every one of his performances as Linus Roache.

That makes him an inspired choice for the role of King Ecbert, a character set to play a pivotal part in Vikings' ambitious and violent sophomore season. It's Ecbert who presents a real threat to Viking ...

'Vikings' 2.1-2: Upping The Ante Of Conquest

March 7th, 2014 4:17pm EST
Vikings
Vikings is back on the History Channel, with an appealing mix of new and continuing characters - including new sons for Ragnor with his new wife - and tensions among Norse leaders which are never too far from erupting into outright killing and battle.

But my favorite parts of the series - last year and now this year as well - are the battles and general interactions Ragnar and his band have with the people living in the British Isles to the West. Episode 2.2 gets Ragnar and his ships blown off-course. Some are missing, but Ragnar and a handful of his ships land someplace they have not be...

George Blagden, Alyssa Sutherland Talk 'Vikings' Season 2
History's scripted drama Vikings has returned for its second season, with just as much blood and intrigue as its first. To mark the occasion, BFTV recently had the opportunity to talk with two of the show's stars, George Blagden (who plays Athelstan) and Alyssa Sutherland (Auslaug). Here's what George and Alyssa had to tell us about their characters and where those characters are headed in season two.

"I find that on Vikings, what we've been able to do is actually mirror character changes and actor changes," George said. "When we're on set, we get scripts maybe two or three weeks in advan...

Linus Roache Doubles Up With Roles In 'Vikings' And 'Non-Stop'
Entertainment fans have something to be especially pleased about this week: we're getting to see not one, but two performances from Linus Roache.

The British actor - who was the best thing about the final three seasons of Law & Order - returns to American television as a regular in History's Vikings, which begins its second season tonight. He inhabits the role of King Ecbert, the ruler of Wessex, a "sophisticated visionary" who will have to deal with the Vikings.

You can watch a clip of Roache in Vikings below.

The actor is also coming out with new work on the big screen. He has a supp...

George Blagden Talks About His Character Athelstan From History's 'Vikings'

March 11th, 2013 10:00am EDT
George Blagden
Last night, viewers met Athelstan, a monk that is taken prisoner by Ragnar on HISTORY’s Vikings show. Over the course of the next few episodes, he’ll develop a unique relationship with Ragnar and the rest of his family.

To learn more about his character, I recently spoke with his portrayer, George Blagden, over email. Here’s what we discussed.

Tell us who your character is and where he fits in?

Athelstan is an Anglo-Saxon monk captured by Ragnar Lothbrok on his first raid to the West. He becomes Ragnar’s slave and then has to adapt to the very alien world of Scandinavia, a place he’s not...
