Anatomy Of A TV Season: The Hits & Misses

April 15th, 2011 12:00pm EDT
Kathy Bates
It’s almost May Sweeps, and season finales will be upon us faster than the networks can cancel soaps. Let’s break it down, network by network, of what succeeded – and what flopped – this TV season.

NBC

Let’s start with the weakest network. After the ‘Jay Leno Show’ debacle last season, NBC is still scrambling to find original programming that will net decent ratings.

‘Law & Order: Los Angeles’ has proved a disappointment, as evidenced by its massive overhaul and return to floundering ratings. The comedy ‘Outsourced’ is on the bubble, and shows such as ‘Chase’ and ‘Undercovers’ bombed ...

Watching Me On TV: Reflections About Blacks in Prime Time Past

The Cosby Show
I’m not old, but I am mature. I’m not in the let’s-go-clubbin’-this-Saturday-night set, but I’m still in the coveted demographic that advertisers like. I’m old enough to remember when vampires were scary—not hot. And I do have those wonderful memories of big, boxy television consoles with three major networks and some local stations with really bad programming. Color television shows were a major big deal, so much so that announcers would actually let you know—“The F.B.I.— in color!” That was probably because not a lot of folks had a color TV set. It’s also cool to see how the physical tele...

Fall TV: What's Surviving, What's Thriving, And What's Dying

November 11th, 2010 10:25am EST
Mike & Molly
We've reached a breaking point in the Fall TV season: almost everything that's still around will likely survive the season (key word: almost). It's becoming clearer which new shows are hits (hint: not many), and there are already several casualties. Let's run down the list.

The already renewed

CBS has picked up all five of their new shows: 'Hawaii Five-O,' 'Mike & Molly,' '@#$% My Dad Says,' 'Blue Bloods' and 'The Defenders.' Each show has performed admirably, but none can be called a runaway hit. CBS, though, has the least holes in its schedule and can be proud that viewership is up ...

NBC Fall Season Preview: Spies, CIA Plots And Outsourcing

September 20th, 2010 11:45am EDT
NBC Fall Preview
NBC is likely getting tired of being referred to as "fourth place NBC." Last year's Jay Leno experiment was clearly a disaster and served as a boon for TBS, which won the Conan sweepstakes. This fall, NBC has fresher programming. With aging favorites and risky new underdogs, does the network have a shot at moving up the ratings ladder, even to third place? Time will tell. Stranger things have happened. Here's a look at what new shows could make the grade and what's in store for old favorites.

J.J. Abrams Heads To Alcatraz

September 17th, 2010 1:00pm EDT
JJ Abrams
J.J. Abrams is one busy guy lately. Recently I reported he and ‘Dark Knight’ scribe Jonah Nolan were working on a new television crime-thriller and today Deadline reported that Fox has greenlit a show based on Alcatraz, the infamous prison located on an island in the San Francisco Bay that housed some pretty famous criminals such as Al Capone. Abrams is set to produce the series and will work with ‘Lost’ writer Elizabeth Surnoff and producer Bryan Burk.

There have been a few other properties that feature Alcatraz as the setting. A few that come to mind are ‘Escape From Alcatraz’, ‘...

J.J. Abrams Teams Up With 'Dark Knight' Writer For A Television Crime-Thriller

September 9th, 2010 1:15pm EDT
J.J. Abrams
Holy dream team Batman! Geek powerhouse J.J. Abrams is reportedly teaming up with Jonah Nolan to shop around a crime-thriller that Nolan wrote. If you haven’t heard of Jonah Nolan but think his name sounds familiar, that’s because he is Christopher Nolan’s brother and helped write 'The Dark Knight', 'The Prestige' and also wrote a short story that 'Memento' was based off of.

That’s enough right there to make anyone want to work with this guy. Throw in Abrams and I’m sure all the studios are clamoring to secure this project A.S.A.P.! No title has been given to the project yet but I’m ...
