John Barrowman: Master of the Universe

5/1/2013 12:10pm EDT
John Barrowman
John Barrowman is best known for his heroics across space and time as Captain Jack Harkness on Doctor Who and Torchwood. But if that's all you know him from, you don't know half of the story. A multi-talented performer for more than 20 years, able to thrill and inspire and even sing, he's well on his way to the top of the acting universe, if he's not already there.

On Arrow, you know him as Malcolm Merlyn, alias "The Dark Archer," a high-ranking member of an enigmatic organization who also happens to be the father of Oliver Queen's best friend Tommy. But, as John points out, to categorize ...

The Geek Closet: Doctor Who Edition!

12/11/2011 3:01pm EST
As we reopen The Geek Closet this month, it's all Doctor Who: I look at the new releases from BBC Books, and check out some out-of-this-world wardrobe!

To make it into The Geek Closet, I'm looking for merch that's different from the usual - something that stands out in a collection. For fans of the Doctor Who universe, the replica wardrobe from the good folks at Abbyshot Clothiers definitely fits that description.

Since 2002, they've been designing clothes modeled after the ones you've seen and pined for from TV, movies, video games and anime. The Doctor Who line is but one of their man...

Hugh Jackman Beats Johnny Depp In Sexiest Sci-Fi Star Poll

9/2/2011 10:13am EDT
Hugh Jackman
Hugh Jackman has beaten competition from Johnny Depp and David Tennant to be named the sexiest actor in science fiction.

Jackman plays mutant superhero Wolverine in the "X-Men" franchise, and fans have voted him their favourite sci-fi star in a poll by TV network Syfy.

Former "Doctor Who" star Tennant came second, while British actor John Barrowman lands third place for his role in "Torchwood."

Depp came fourth for his movie "Edward Scissorhands," while Harrison Ford rounded out the top five for his portrayal of Han Solo in the "Star Wars" films.

In the female category, Sarah Michelle G...

'Torchwood: Miracle Day's' Eve Myles: Without Captain Jack, Gwen Is In A Strange, Lost Place

Torchwood: Miracle Day | Photo Credits: Frank Ockenfels/Starz
After waiting more than two years for a Season 4 greenlight, Torchwood stars John Barrowman and Eve Myles are quite giddy to be back on set. On a windy day in April, shooting one of the season's final episodes, they may have actually even reverted into school kids.

Torchwood hits America: Captain Jack and the gang get racy, explosive in Miracle Day

"You're stupid! You're stupid! Stuuuupiiiid!" Barrowman called to Myles, cycling around in a bright red bicycle, while she told stories about Gwen's adventures since Jack left Earth last season. "This is very, very normal," Myles explained. " H...

TV On Blu-Ray: Sorting The Argument

12/6/2010 11:00am EST
Ever since TV shows began to be released on Blu-Ray, I've heard the same chorus of cries over and over again: "Why isn't there a Blu-Ray? I won't buy it until it's on Blu-Ray!" I always found myself wondering, "Is it really that big a deal?"

I decided to find out for myself.

Before I begin, a disclaimer is warranted: as you know if you're a regular reader of my TV on DVD column, I am not an audiovisual engineer or technical expert. That said, I do have the eye of someone who's watched way too much TV over the last quarter century, a reliable Blu-Ray player, and a brand-new 40" tele...

Captain Jack Isn’t Done With ‘Doctor Who’

11/19/2010 11:36pm EST
Captain Jack Harkness
Russel T. Davies recently revealed in an interview that Steven Moffat, the current “Doctor Who" showrunner, would like nothing more than to bring back everyone's favorite omnisexual immortal, Captain Jack Harkness: “Well, Steven said he'd love to see Jack in Doctor Who. So if Steven says that, Steven will make it happen, I would think. That's not inside information, but I bet one day it will happen. I'd love to see it. It would be marvellous."

What does this mean for “Doctor Who,” or “Torchwood” for that matter, the spinoff series that Jack has helmed for over two seasons? It means that we...

Co-Star Got To Touch Eva Longoria Parker's 'Boobs And Bum'

7/13/2010 11:56am EDT
John Barrowman
John Barrowman got up close and personal with Eva Longoria Parker on the set of "Desperate Housewives."

He explained, "She's amazing. I gave her a good grope. We were doing some booty-dancing and I said, 'Show me some of that Latino a*s!' So she did. And then I was like, 'Your boobies are doing alright, too,' so I got to touch the boobs and the bum. She grabbed my goods, too."

Barrowman is best known for the BBC science fiction series "Doctor Who" and "Torchwood." He's gay.

Everything Geeky: Sci-Fi Shows You May Have Missed

11/4/2009 2:50pm EST
After watching the premiere of "V" last night, I was starting to wonder if Sci-Fi is going to make a real comeback into the spotlight. Let's face it, the popularity of this genre has risen in the past few years. It is no longer just the diehard Trekkies that care about Spock and Kirk, but the newcomers swarming after J.J. Abrams' reboot.

With shows like "Lost" and "Heroes" gaining notice on major television networks and the critical acclaim of "Battlestar Galactica," the stereotypes of typical "sci-fi nerds" is starting to wear off. In its place are people who never cared about phasers ...

Filming Begins For New Season Of 'Torchwood'

8/26/2008 1:20pm EDT
Filming for the third season of BBC America's highest rated series ever, "Torchwood," has begun in Cardiff, Wales. The hit sci-fi series

is scheduled to return in 2009 with the third installment titled "Torchwood: Children of Earth."

The new season sees the Torchwood team embarking on a single action-packed adventure as they battle for the future of the human race against the fiercest force they have encountered.

The highly-motivated team is John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness, Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper and Gareth David-Lloyd as Ianto Jones. Other regular cast involved in their high...

Gay Characters On TV? No Big Deal

8/7/2008 8:35am EDT
Ellen Degeneres
Remember a few years ago when entertainment magazines hailed the coming of gay television? With hits like Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and Will & Grace drawing millions of fans on both sides of the gay fence it seemed like a veritable gay revolution was at hand. Then "Will & Grace" stopped being funny, "Queer Eye" ceased being entertaining, and Ellen became the straightest lesbian to ever host her own talk show.

Queer Eye

Was the gay television boom dead, or had it retreated into the closet waiting for a brand new coming out party? Where have all the dude loving dudes gone...

BBC America Acquires All-New Season Of 'Torchwood'

7/25/2008 10:07am EDT
BBC America announced the acquisition of the highly anticipated season three of its hit sci-fi series, Torchwood. The highest rating show in the history of BBC America will return to the channel with five all-new episodes in 2009.

The award-winning show, which received huge critical acclaim for season one and two, will premiere on BBC America shortly after the UK premiere.

Richard De Croce, Senior Vice President, Programming, BBC Worldwide America said, "Captain Jack is coming back to BBC America and we can't wait! 'Torchwood' really represents the essence of the channel - it's se...

'Robin Hood' Episode Review: Sister Hood

4/30/2008 10:51am EDT
Robin Hood
Well, hello there Torchwood fans. Are you all feeling a little lonely now that Captain Jack is on holiday until next year? How will you fill your normally BBC America filled Saturday evenings? You could find old episodes of Absolutely Fabulous and giggle knowingly whenever Toshiko actress Naoko Mori shows up as Saffy's constantly abused friend. Or maybe you can check out "Torchwood's" timeslot replacement, the second season of Robin Hood. I chose this route instead and am happy to report that BBC America has another hit on its hands. Off to Sherwood Forest we go.

Before I take a look a...

'Torchwood' Episode Recap: Exit Wounds

4/21/2008 10:53am EDT
My dear sweet Torchwood, you've taken us all on quite a ride this season. You began with a handful of top-notch episodes, keeping us laughing and gripping the edge of our seats waiting for what happens next. Then things got a bit shaky for awhile, and some viewers were beginning to doubt you could hold our attentions until the end. Sure, there were fantastic episodes along the way, like Gwen's wedding, but there were also missteps such as the circus people. So were you able to restore our faith in this diamond in the rough, or did we click off halfway through a patented Jack-scowl?

Torchwood Recap: Fragments

4/15/2008 1:34pm EDT
Well, we're at the penultimate episode of the season, so one might assume the show would move at a breakneck pace to get the viewer's blood pumping leading to a doozy of a cliffhanger that would drive immigration to the UK. Well this turns out to be half true.

The episode begins with a bang, ok four bangs to be specific. While investigating some rift activity at a building outside of Cardiff, the team splits up and each come across some interesting bomb shaped devices, which promptly detonate. Jack, Tosh, Owen, and Ianto all get caught in blasts while Gwen, who decided to sleep in this...

'Torchwood' Recap: Adrift

4/7/2008 12:11pm EDT
After last week's less than stellar episode (I'm being kind here) Jack and the team are back in top form with an alien-free Gwen-centric story. We learn tonight that the rift giveth (aliens) and the rift taketh away (people).

We open on Jonah Bevan, a sweet lad who is waking home from a wholesome teenage activity, he receives a text message from his mum about being late and he looks up to see her watching him from their flat across the way. There sure isn't anything creepy about this scene as Jonah heads across an empty bridge, well as long as you don't count the strange flashing light...

'Torchwood' Has Been A Rollercoaster Of Emotions & Quality

3/31/2008 9:03am EDT
Ever wonder what the Torchwood crew does on their night off? Well, Tosh continues to work because she has no life to speak of and Jack probably does things I can't repeat here, but as for the rest of the team, they go to the movies. Ianto takes Gwen and Owen to the Electro, an old time movie house where they think they're going to be treated to a history of Cardiff. Gwen and Owen are understandably prepared to be bored, but Ianto is all about the black and white silent films.

While preparing the film, the son of the Electro owners notices that there is some creepy footage of sideshow f...

'Torchwood' Recap: Something Borrowed

3/24/2008 9:13am EDT
I am never getting married. If I trust every show I've ever seen, and really why wouldn't I trust television, getting married never ends well.

On the last episode of "Torchwood" we started with a wacky bachelorette party, with booze, a stripper, and some rather inebriated women. Gwen shows up late, as she was caught up fighting a shape-shifting alien with razor sharp teeth. It bites her before Jack diplomatically takes it down with several shots from his gun. All is fine and dandy until Gwen wakes up the next morning, her wedding day, with quite a bun in her oven. Yep, you can get pre...

Torchwood Episode Recap: A Day in the Death

3/17/2008 10:09am EDT
You know what happens when you die? Well I learned from this week's episode of Torchwood that you become quite chatty and look to help others. This is really ruining my hope for a zombie apocalypse when everyone comes back from the dead a philosopher. So when we left our heroes, Owen was given an undetermined amount of time to "live" while the rest of the gang decides what to do with him. Oh, and Martha Jones is there, but you probably didn't notice her in the background, you know, right to the left of all the actual action.

So this week we have two storylines going on, both involving ...

Torchwood Recap: Dead Man Walking

3/10/2008 12:23pm EDT
Where we left our heroes:

Owen had been shot and pronounced dead by guest Torchwood member Martha Jones. Everyone is sad and stuff, forgetting that they live in the land of sci-fi.

So what happens next?

Jack and this creepy little girl have a meeting, during which I realize I could write a book comparing Torchwood to Angel, then I conclude I don't have the time and keep watching. The creepy little girl with the Tarot fetish sends Jack to church, which houses what can only be described as a Weevil slumber party. It is here that Jack finds what he has been searching for, a second res...

Death, Alien Larva & More On 'Torchwood'

3/3/2008 9:05am EST
After last week's disappointing episode, Torchwood makes a triumphant return to form in the episode "Reset," which may not be the funniest episode this season, but it sure was the best. Torchwood working as a team, an alien mystery to solve, and one hell of a cliffhanger. Oh, and a little guest star in the form of Ms. Martha Jones, or should I say, Doctor Jones? (Freema Ageyman).

So we open with a medical mystery where unrelated murders are taking place, only nobody knows how exactly the victims are getting murdered, as there are no murder weapons and no apparent cause of death. Torchw...

'Torchwood' Episode Recap: Adam

2/25/2008 9:58am EST
Remember that Buffy episode from season 4 where Jonathan used a spell to become Sunnydale's biggest star? Well this weeks episode of Torchwood borrows this little trope right down to inserting the new character into the show's opening montage. Does Torchwood take this plot and make it its own, or are we left feeling like we're stuck in a world without shrimp?

So we know something is up from the start of the episode when Gwen walks into the clubhouse and Adam is there. He makes it clear that he has been part of the team for the past three years, which is all well and good aside from the...

'Torchwood' Episode Recap: Meat

2/18/2008 9:40am EST
On the latest episode of "Torchwood," Gwen's fiance Rhys is on his way to work when he learns that one of his trucks was in an accident. Apparently he manages a trucking company, not that we ever learned that before this episode. Anyway, he visits the accident and sees the body of his friend, the driver, along with a lot of meat. Rhys wants to get closer, but the cops inform him that Torchwood is on their way to investigate and he would have to wait in his car.

At this point I started wondering how secret of an organization Torchwood really is. Everyone seems to know about them, but t...

Tune In To Cable TV For Top-Notch, Edgy Shows

2/15/2008 2:00pm EST
Showtime's Dexter
There's plenty to watch on network television, but we have long been living in the Golden Age of Cable. Ever since HBO told us, "It's not TV. It's HBO," we've been hooked. Ponying up the money for cable can be difficult, but these channels make it worth the price.

The Veterans:

HBO has lost many of the signature shows that made it a household name. The Sopranos, Sex and the City, Six Feet Under - they were all instrumental in defining HBO as the channel for daring, intelligent and mature programming. But don't write off the channel just yet. While its new series don't quite match the ...

'Doctor Who's' Freema Agyeman & 'Ugly Betty's' Alan Dale Guest Star On 'Torchwood'

2/14/2008 8:05am EST
Alan Dale
BBC America's top-rated series, Torchwood, exploded into season two with guest star James Marsters (Buffy) and now episode six brings a highly anticipated cross-over with Doctor Who's Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman) and a menacing guest role for Alan Dale (Ugly Betty, The O.C.).

Created by Russell T. Davies, lead writer on the current "Doctor Who," the high-octane second season has taken a stronger "Torchwood" team through dare-devil action, temptation, heartache - and now they face a life changing event.

"Torchwood" season two airs Saturdays, 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Captain Jack (Jo...

'Torchwood' Episode Recap: To the Last Man

2/11/2008 9:59am EST
Every year Torchwood brings Tommy, a British solider, out of cryogenic sleep. Apparently he's supposed to save the world. For the past 90 years he has not been needed. All that is about to change.

Ahh...stories about time paradoxes, if you think too hard about them your brain is likely to turn to oatmeal and force its way out of your ears. So let me try to explain it. The rift in Cardiff is pushing together two different time periods, 1918 and 2008. Since two times cannot exist at the same time all hell will break loose. The only way to close the time rift is to have Tommy, a soldier f...

An Exclusive Q&A With 'Torchwood' Star Burn Gorman

2/7/2008 11:00am EST
Burn Gorman
Sex, aliens, and shooting your boss - they're all just a typical day if you're Burn Gorman of BBC America's hit show Torchwood. Starpulse recently spoke with Gorman, who portrays Owen Harper the team's morally ambiguous doctor. From guest stars to script surprises, we learn just how much fun working for an alien hunting organization can be.

(Editor's note: In the UK, seasons of a television show are called series.)

First off, congratulations on the success of the show.

Thank you very much

Were you surprised with the strong positive reaction the show has received in America...

'Torchwood' Recap: The Right Mix Of Action, Drama & Humor

2/4/2008 9:40am EST
Last week on "Torchwood" we learned that someone named Grey is alive. While we don't learn anything new about this revelation, this episode introduced viewers to a brand new plot thread that I can only assume will unfold throughout this season: alien invasion.

The team investigates the murder of two burglars who made the unfortunate mistake of breaking into the apartment of a young couple. With Torchwood involved you know it isn't a simple homicide, but soon leads to the questioning of Beth, the wife, a woman who has a habit of shorting out lights whenever she becomes emotional.

Itching for a TV Fix? There Are Lots Of Ways To Watch Your Favorite Shows

1/30/2008 10:56am EST
Writers' Strike Diary, Day 85: My DVR is empty! I look forward to each weekend for new episodes of "Torchwood" on BBC America, but otherwise my TV just sits there, watching me and judging me. I'm a TV addict in need of a fix.

Fortunately, there are dealers out there willing to trade TV shows for a price. Who can viewers turn to? Where can you get the best deal? Should you venture into that cold world or search the internet? Hopefully the following guide can help you out.

Different Ways To Get That Television Fix:

This would be those round discs that you put into a p...

'Torchwood' Season 2 Premiere: Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang

1/28/2008 11:45am EST
When last we left our heroes at "Torchwood" the team had survived an attack by one giant ass alien from the rift. Everyone hugged and kissed and was happy, and then Captain Jack Harkness heard a familiar noise and disappeared from Torchwood headquarters.

What's going on now?

Gwen took on the role of the team leader and seems to be doing well with teammates Ianto, Toshiko, and Owen. They end up in a relatively polite car chase with a fish-headed alien that ends with a hostage situation and the return of Jack.

Wait, didn't I see Spike in the previews?

That's right, Buffy/...
