'Buffy The Vampire Slayer' Named The Greatest Cult TV Series

July 27th, 2012 9:17am EDT
Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Fans just can't get enough of vampires. Today it's "Twilight," but not too long ago it was "Buffy The Vampire Slayer," which tops a new magazine list of the 25 Best Cult TV Shows from the past 25 years.

The Joss Whedon-helmed series ran for 144 episodes between March 1997 and May 2003, and is number one on Entertainment Weekly's new poll. The show was a mixture of drama, comedy, romance, action, and horror.

"Buffy" centered on the exploits of its titular vampire slayer, a mystical "Chosen One" living in Sunnydale, Calif., an idyllic small town situated atop the mouth to hell. Buffy (Sarah...

TV Report Card: Grading 10 Season Finales

May 25th, 2012 12:07pm EDT
Revenge Cast
Season finales are essentially the Hollywood version of final exams. They have to shock and awe and entice viewers into returning after four arduous months of dead air. From births and deaths to break-ups and OMG-worthy shockers, I’m grading 10 season finales. The SPOILER ALERT is implied.

Reckoning, Revenge’s thrilling season ender saw Emily Thorne (Emily VanCamp) not only confront her father’s killer in a satisfying and strangely sweet final fight, but surrender to her feelings for ruggedly handsome bartender, Jack. It wouldn’t be “Revenge” without infuriating twists and double-c...

'Supernatural' Season 7 Finale Recap: Winchesters, Interrupted

May 19th, 2012 9:50am EDT
ackles and padalecki
At its core, “Supernatural” is about two brothers, a badass car, and the crazy, colorful creatures they encounter and people they save on their road-tripping adventures. It simultaneously excels and breaks our hearts when anything threatens the delicate balance of off-the-wall humor, fraternal bonding and compelling action. The seventh season finale capped off a season of supreme highs and devilish lows by bidding farewell to a fan favorite, resurrecting another, and boldly going where no Winchester had gone before. Before I delve into commentary, I must rock out to “Carry On My Wayward ...

'Supernatural' 7.22 Recap: The Winchesters And The Bloody Horcruxes

I’ve always admired the old adage, “Don’t work hard; work smart.” While I’m assuming the crew and cast toil their hot little asses off, the writers have always worked smart. This week’s installment of “Supernatural” is proof. as it brilliantly connects the bizarre dots scattered throughout the season and still manages to poke fun at both Americans who love mass-produced junk food and the heated political climate.

“There Will Be Blood” begins with a “Dateline”-esque segment about Dick Roman's purchase of Sucracorp, the largest manufacturer of high fructose corn syrup, aka the ingredien...

'Supernatural' 7.21 Recap: What Beats An Angel?

It’s been an unofficial tradition for “Supernatural’s” 20th episode to mine the treasures of eccentricities possessed by recurring star, Misha Collins, and/or to lay the groundwork for the season finale. Last year, I was riveted by the fantastic “The Man Who Would Be King” that detailed Castiel's fall from fierce, righteous angel to collaborator with demons. This year, I was mildly entertained by a funny, albeit meandering episode that detailed Castiel redefining his grace.

It irritates me when the boys are written stupid, so I’m a little chaffed to find that after sending Charlie Bra...

It’s better late than never. While most networks only have a handful shows with fates undetermined, the CW just made its first saves by officially renewing “The Vampire Diaries,” “90210” and “Supernatural” for the 2012-2013 television season.

“The Vampire Diaries” and "90210" will be entering their fourth season and fifth seasons, respectively. While “Supernatural,” starring Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, will be The CW’s longest-running scripted show when it kicks off its eighth season in the fall.

The paranormal drama will also have a new showrunner at the helm next season. Las...

“Supernatural” has always been admirably diverse, but around the fifth season, hunting became a good old boys club. Granted, those boys were equal parts pretty and goofy, but I was still perturbed by the severe lack of female hunters, angels and key players. So I wished, prayed and may have even written a few angry emails begging for a decent female character that wasn’t a damsel in need of rescue or charmed by Sam and Dean’s spectacular faces, had no problem fighting for the greater good and maybe had a few awesome one-liners. The answer to my prayers came in the form of Charlie Bradbur...

It’s probably inappropriate if I say I’d like to be a “fancy lady.” The moniker makes it seem alluring, like a woman who wears the finest dresses detailed with gold buttons and a bustle and rides side-saddle. It sounds like the heroine in Keira Knightley’s next movie. Only an old-timey ghost on “Supernatural” could make the world’s oldest profession sound romantic and cool.

“Of Grave Importance” is a decent installment that finally reunites Bobby’s ghost with the Sam and Dean.

The episode begins, not with the massacres of teenagers, but with Dean stress-eating on the hood of their l...

Leave it to “Supernatural” to wallop fans with Sam bravely facing his own demise only for poor dead Castiel to fly in for a last minute save and then to return with a lighthearted, filler episode that played as both a love letter to binge-drinking and a PSA for drinking and driving, and then stomp on our hearts with a one-two punch of--SPOILER ALERT-- Bobby Singer’s singers return. That’s enough to drive this liquor-averse blogger to drink in celebration and because of all the feelings. Where’s a raspberry mojito when you need one or 14? I love this show so much.

I may have been too harsh on “Supernatural” last week. I say this as I’m absolutely humming with afterglow from magic of “The Born-Again Identity.” This episode was the proverbial flowers-and-candy gesture that had me at hello. “Supernatural” fans should know by now that I can never stay mad at it.

The show opens without the squishy death of a hapless stranger, but with a haggard Sam Winchester wobbly running through Crack Alley. You know you look like death warmed over when a drug dealer worries about you and offers complimentary goofballs so you can sleep. Mark Pellegrino returns...

'Supernatural' (7.16) Recap: Bad Moon Arising Indeed

I can count the unwatchable episodes of “Supernatural” on one hand—“Bugs,” “Ghostfacers,” and “Red Sky At Morning” immediately come to mind. I will have to add this week’s installment, “Out With the Old,” to that extremely short list. To be fair, it has distinct displeasure of being the first episode after a three-week long hellatus, it also followed the stellar, instant classic of “Repo Man,” so I admit the expectations were great, but sadly, the episode failed more than succeeded.

There has been a lot of press about this upcoming episode, because it was begins the culmination of cruci...

I once had dreams of becoming an Emmy-Winning actress, but thanks to a traumatizing audition for a middle school drama club and being roughly a few inches shy of Snooki-esque shortness, those dreams never panned out. I’m happy to leave the acting to the professionals, and admire their work as a fan and critic. For this television-aholic, there’s nothing better than beholding a great actor who steals every frame of their scenes.

Here is a list of my favorite scene-stealers:

Jared Padalecki Appeals For Hospital Donations Instead Of Baby Gifts

Following their happy announcement, Padalecki asked his followers to give money to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital instead of buying the couple gifts, telling them, "Lets make the world a brighter place for those not as fortunate."

Fans set up an online fundraising page, and Padalecki is stunned by the news that...

I took last week off not only because of my Sammy-sized clown phobia, but because I was forced into celebrating a milestone birthday. I’m back, though, significantly older than I was before. I did watch “Plucky Pennywhistle’s Magical Menagerie” in the safety of a psychiatrist’s office, and I thought that what the episode lacked in action on the front end, it made up the crackish humor “Supernatural” is known for, and that’s an episode after my own heart.

After watching “Repo Man,” which welcomed back one of my favorite characters in the devil himself, and unearthed some startlingly ugly...

As “Supernatural” fans, I’m sure we’ve all faced the feat that is explaining the show to friends we’re trying to lure to the dark side. It was difficult in the first season, so add a few dozen deaths of the main characters, one missing soul, an Apocalypse and an one reverently stored trench coat, and it’s damned near impossible. “Supernatural” is wonderfully and horrifically complicated, just how I like it. So I was taken aback at how the show returned with a straight-forward, simply told episode, especially after the last time-warping extravaganza. “The Slice Girls” was directed by pr...

Suck it, “Vampire Diaries!” TVLine.com also reported that—SPOILER ALERT— “Supernatural” staple Jim Beaver will eventually return, and my favorite guest star, Mark Pellegrino will be reprising his fabulously evil turn as Lucifer in the episode 15. So this week's episode felt like icing on a very awesome pop cult cake.

“Supernatural’s” winter hellatus (as the fans affectionately call it) gave me a lot of time to hypothesize where the show could go from the last moments of “Death’s Door,” where Bobby seemingly headed into the great beyond: Crowley could appear with the last-minute save like the badass King of Hell he is. Castiel could emerge from the waters of the lake, a fully redeemed angel of the Lord, and heal Bobby’s brain. He could've survived but suffered personality-altering brain damage and anemsia. Sam and Dean could have hunter’s funeral, a body burning on the pyre. It's “Supernatural” afte...

I must confess that I’m known for giving the best Christmas presents. With the big day less than two weeks away, I’m putting on my bedazzled Santa hat and taking over gift-giving duties for 10 celebs who have been naughty and nice this year.

Lindsay Lohan

It’s hard being a fan of an actor as troubled as Lindsay Lohan, who seems to be a magnet for mugshots, poor decisions and merry-go-round trips to the L.A. County Jail. My present to the star currently gracing the cover of Playboy in an awkward, overly airbrushed spread, would be the advice and guidance of a celebrity who have rebounde...

As a fan of “Supernatural,” there are certain things I expect each week: crass, dark humor, violent deaths, epic monsters, and of course, a hearty helping of brotherly, visceral angst. After 135 episodes, I thought the show was done taking my breath away. And then I curled up on the couch to watch “Supernatural’s” winter finale, “Death’s Door,” and realized that executive producer Sera Gamble and company had found completely new and twisted ways to destroy me. And I love them for it. “Death’s Door” was a wistful, beautifully written and acted exploration of the human spirit, the traged...

Ever since The CW released the description for this week’s episode, I’ve been drooling, more than Dean Winchester approaching the Biggerson’s pie buffet, at the notion of a gore-filled hour of my favorite demon hunters becoming the hunted by a flesh-eating predator that looked like a zombie from “The Walking Dead.” Instead, I had to watch an exposition-heavy episode where one of the best hunters in the world was taken down by a friggin’ sandwich. With Thanksgiving around the corner, I’m quite grateful that Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) are so incredibly easy on the eyes, ...

My commitment to my favorite television shows is akin to marriage. I make sacrifices for it (my Friday nights to start); I forgive it when it angers me; I support it through thick and thin, sickness and sweeps. So an episode like “Season 7, Time For A Wedding” is a premise after my own heart: Becky, a spritely, obsessive fan of the prophet Chuck Shurley “Supernatural” book series (and a foil for "Supernatural's" more passionate fans), married Sam Winchester, the man of her dreams. Can you blame her?

The episode began with Dean Winchester flirting with a waitress at a strip club. I ...

After a heartbroken Sam literally took a long walk off a short pier, I found myself simultaneously rolling my eyes and clutching my pearls at last week’s emotional and manipulative cliffhanger, because nothing good happens when Sam and Dean separate and it was obvious the brothers would reunite. Regardless, I imagined poor Sammy huddled in a hovel of a hotel room while grotesque visions of Lucifer danced through his head. So I was eager for Sam and Dean's quarrel to be resolved with some emo-happy conversations and maybe a shirtless fight in the rain.

While none of that happened, “The ...

Last week’s episode left me unfulfilled as Dean hadn't shared his secret, and instead chose to try to bury his head in the sand and his liver in alcohol. Luckily, for my sanity, “Shut Up, Dr. Phil” was lighthearted and unexpectedly charming, thanks sci-fi staples and “Angel” alums James Marsters (“Hawaii Five-0”) and Charisma Carpenter (“Burn Notice,” “Buffy The Vampire Slayer”).

It was an ugly moment for the often self-destructive Dean Winchester, and it spoke to his frayed mental state.
