'So You Think You Can Dance' Season 7: Finale Part One

August 12th, 2010 9:12am EDT
SYTYCD Final 3
It’s been a busy past few weeks. We’ve seen the departure of Jose, Billy and Adechike, not to mention some excellent pieces and moving routines. We are at the end – down to three dancers that were a little worrisome at the start of this competition. Robert with his pretty boy looks and carbon copy Billy Bell technique initially seemed to be a strong contender that was destined to leave in the final weeks. Lauren the recent high school cheerleader with acrobatic skills to spare began as a jailbait tease with some cutesy moves and not much personality. Kent was a small town hick with some Pod...

'SYTYCD' Season 7 Week 8 - Top 5 Perform

July 28th, 2010 10:56pm EDT
Lauren and Alison teamed up for a Broadway number
After a two week hiatus due to conflicting schedules and no access to a TV or DVR, the profile of the latest season of 'So You Think You Can Dance' is back. Within the past two weeks we lost another stellar dancer to injury as Ashley went home to rest her injured rib cage. We also saw the first no-elimination week with no warning last time. It seemed like Billy, Robert or Jose was in trouble – and Billy even declined to perform due to another injury! Nigel obviously saw the mix of fan favorites and talented competitors and made an executive decision. No one went home last week. Which means ...

The show opened with a group number filled with fog, angels, and boys in long white skirts. Mia Michaels choreographed the routine to a slow paced Sting song. It was understated and pretty with lots of reaching and modern arms. It’s then noted that SYTYCD was nominated for three Emmys today (Legacy and Katherine last season, Mia Michaels’ three pieces from season 5, and the makeup crew). Woohoo. It’s also noted the ‘Glee’ was nominated 19 times. A FOX show promoting another FOX show? How surprising. Later, they also plugged auditions for the next season of ‘American Idol.’

The bottom three...

Lauren + Kent
Remember the elimination episode last week where Melinda was finally sent away? If you don’t, there’s another less deserved change they introduced for Season 7. This week each contestant will perform two dances – one with an Allstar, one with another contestant.

Sadly, there were no Alex performances tonight. He wasn’t dancing due to an injury. Oh sweet Jesus, when Nigel said “ruptured Achilles tendon” it hurt my Achilles. This means he may have a season ending injury if not career ending (if not taken care of properly). He’ll be in the bottom three this week and if he cannot dance next w...

'So You Think You Can Dance' Season 7: Melinda Eliminated, 8 Remain

July 2nd, 2010 10:51am EDT
SYTYCD Final 8
You cannot get any more dramatic in song than ‘O Fortuna’ from Carmina Burana. Unless you add an authentic 18th century white ruffled collar of royalty to your costume. SYTYCD did one better. The sleeved mesh on the boys put it over the top. The slow and controlled jazz/lyrical hybrid opening number was heavy on the Alex and I think Ashley. They’re opening the show with more group numbers that feature soloists. I like. Especially since we’re still getting to know each remaining dancer.

Next week there’s a new setup for the show. All remaining dancers will perform two routines. In one, the...

So You Think You Can Dance
It just keeps rolling on. Nine dancers performed tonight. Three ladies and six men performed a solo as well as their selected routine. Finally, we got to see all the dancers in their element once again. Considering the quality of some of them, this may have been the only time we’ll see their solos until the very end. Let’s get into it:

Lauren

Allstar: Neil

Style: Broadway

Flirty girl Lauren had the best pick of the routines this week. She was seducing her partner in a Broadway style – and from what we’ve seen of her in solos and try-outs in the past this should be no problem. If she’s...

Bret Michaels To Meet With 'American Idol' Producers And Discuss Replacing Simon Cowell

June 28th, 2010 10:30pm EDT
Bret Michaels and Simon Cowell
Rocker Bret Michaels has revealed he is in talks with "American Idol" bosses about possibly replacing Simon Cowell as a judge on the show.

The Poison singer made his first live appearance after his recent brain hemorrhage and mild stroke on the talent show's finale and rumors have been rife ever since that he's the man to take over Cowell's chair.

And now he admits he's planning to meet with producers to discuss the idea.

He tells Parade.com, "We have a meeting in L.A. in a couple weeks and we're going to sit down and talk. They did a poll and I think it was Madonna, P. Diddy, Howard Ste...

The first step is admitting you have a problem - a television addiction problem. It's the summer and whether you're on school break or have a full-time job you should be taking advantage of the weather and enjoying the beach. Yet day after day and night after night you find yourself parked on the couch switching back and forth between watching Jillian Michaels kick someone's butt into shape and those damn guidos on Jersey Shore.

We all have our guilty pleasures in life, some may chose gossip magazines and some prefer a pint a Ben and Jerry's ice cream. We'd rather sit back and indulge in a...

New week, new partners, new dances, new everything. Week 2 kicks off with some memorable pairs taking on some memorable dances. I happened to be stuck in a basement with a flashlight waiting for a tornado to destroy my apartment when it aired, but my trusty DVR worked all through the storms from hell. One catch – a mostly red map of my area and some scrolling warnings block a good 15% of the screen. No sense wasting time (since a wave of violent thunderstorms has already destroyed any chance of me making my deadline) so let’s recap!

Billy Bell

Allstar: Comfort

This is it. The moment of truth for one scared, hopeful dancer. Somebody is again going home tonight, and it will take solos from the bottom three to sway the judges’ decisions. After a dazzling group number filled with a couple noted solo parts (Jose, Melinda) Cat begin reading results. The unlucky few are dancing for their lives tonight: Cristina, Alexie, and Melinda.

I can’t be surprised at this decision. The performance by Cristina wasn’t going to make people pick up the phone, and Alexie was also less than riveting. Melinda performed, but lacked polish, poise, and perhaps a real under...

It’s baaaaaack. Only now the organization of the entire season has been turned on its’ head. I don’t know exactly why FOX allowed them to go through with this change or why the show felt this change was necessary, but we begin watching the contestants perform in a group of 11 – not 20.

They bent the rules and allowed one extra male dancer, so six guys and five girls compete each week to stay alive in the competition. They are partnered with Allstars from previous seasons – and only one person goes home each week.

Allstar – Lauren

They performed a Broadway number ...

Top 5 TV, June 6-12: 'Pretty Little Liars,' 'Real Housewives Of NYC' & More

Pretty Little Liars
This week, the Top 5 TV shows you should watch include two series premieres, a season finale, the announcement of a Top 10, and, my favorite choice, a down and dirty reunion special with some of the most outspoken and outrageous women on television.

“Pretty Little Liars” – Tuesday, ABCFamily

I had the opportunity to preview the “Pretty Little Liars” series premiere, and I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised. ABCFamily’s new drama follows four young girls as they sort through the pain of losing one of their own and try to keep the secrets they thought would stay secret forever. Episod...

"I adore Paula. Whatever happens, I will be working with her in some capacity. Because I miss her." Simon Cowell hints he could be teaming up with fellow former American Idol judge when he takes his "The X Factor" talent show Stateside.

Simon officially announced yesterday that he signed an "X Factor" contract, which will launch in the U.S. next year. "Idol's" resident mean guy will judge the new series as well as executive produce it. With that kind of control, there's no doubt he will be able to bring on board the people of his choosing - which could include Paula.

SYTYCD FINALE
We're here. The end. The end of SYTYCD Season 6. Of course, every dancer was "amazing" and this was "the best cast yet." They say that each season, but usually in the finale they show you why.

The opener was a techno-bondage jazz routine that utilized every dancer's strengths. Of course Legacy begins by breaking in the center of the stage. The bottom 14 used red chairs to add some unique combinations. Ooh, super jazzy. The top 6 appeared in the back halfway through the routine, trying to stand out to show that they are the reason we're all turning in to watch. The large group numbers are...

Let me explain. This is the finale. This is supposed to be the end of the latest, greatest season of SYTYCD. The first part of the season finale must be a teaser, a warm-up, the foreplay before the ultimate performance. The hairs on the back of your neck stand up multiple times for different partnerships and you are meant to have trouble picking your favorite dance by the end of the night. You hope that your favorite performer is still recognizable after the flurry of performances-of-a-lifetime. It's the best series of performances yet in the history of the show.

What we saw tonight was ...

6 Move On To The Finals Of 'So You Think You Can Dance'

Cancel your plans and set your DVRs now otherwise you'll get busy, forget and suddenly you're calling friends who may have taped the finale of "Glee" that just snuck up on you. I'm sorry, my nerd is showing. (But seriously, if you have the show taped let me know, I got busy and forgot…)

The final bottom four of Season 6 read like my predictions: Legacy, Ryan, Mollee and Ellenore. Ok, for that to be true, Legacy and Mollee need to go. Amazingly, Ashleigh was saved by America. Last night she didn't eve...

8. That's all that's left this season of So You Think You Can Dance. Well, that's all that's supposed to be left - where did Ashleigh go? She wasn't introduced in the opening sequence. Less than a day before taking the stage she dislocated her shoulder during a lift in practice and is out this week. Doesn't mean she's out of the competition - she just has to hope her fans vote her into the next episode even though she's skipping her last chance to impress America. Best of luck, she'll need it.

I thought there was one more week of regular episodes after this week, but the judges and Cat D...

Who would have thought Ashleigh and Legacy would have survived to be in the top 10? Yet here they are, along with some favorites from way back and others that have shown improvement over the course of the show. It's the same drill for this episode with a few new additions: this episode features only the dancers that will make it onto the Season 6 tour. They can breathe a bit easier because of that. The judges no longer have the final say in who goes home - all eliminations can be blamed on the voting viewers. There will also be new partners and solos for all, with two chances to perform wit...

Ellenore and Ryan:

Dance 1: Lindy Hop

So You Think You Can Dance
So You Think You Can Dance elimination show began with a jazz number by Wade and Amanda Robson. "Aha!" by Imogen Heap, who seems to be the most used musical artists this week, paired with the unique "covered pieces of art" theme was cool. I loves me some intricate group work that mixed and cuts up groups at different times. There was enough of that to keep me with the piece, but the odd interplay of light and darkness, motion and flex feet/hands kept me alert and looking for what was yet to come. Hopefully all the dancers enjoyed it because that's the last time two of them will dance with a...

Cat Deeley wore a baked potato-worthy sheath of foil to see what the top 14 had to give. It was distracting only because it made me hungry for some starch. Previously the So You Think You Can Dance judges have been getting particular about performance and sharp routines. Sloppiness had cropped up a lot and they finally broke. They took no prisoners last week with their critiquing. It was a step in the right direction as season 6 really hasn't been that impressive since the elimination rounds began. The fear of being eliminated may hold some performers back, but that cannot continue if they ...

Remote Control Battle: TV Both Men And Women May Enjoy Together

November 16th, 2009 9:00pm EST
Remote Control Battle
A Woman's Perspective: Remember when sitcoms used to make jokes about how men and women watch television differently? The sloppy, somewhat aloof husband character would always be zooming through the channels, flicking the remote faster than his perky, pretty, younger wife could keep up. She'd then snatch the remote and pause on each channel achingly slowly, narrating not only what was occurring in the scene on screen but also what she hoped or thought would occur next.

Not only did men and women watch differently, though, what they watched was always assumed to be different. Men had the...

It's been so long since we've seen a cast showcased together in a group number on So You Think You Can Dance. These are usually the most creative and fun pieces of the entire series. From these group numbers come no elimination and only performances from each dancer. Interestingly enough after last night's cool Afro-jazz routine, it looks like a heavily influenced African/Mayan style made the cut as the premier group number. It was wild. Russell's krumping was noticeable right off the bat as was Jakob's flexibility and Legacy's intricate moves that sneak into dances with no warning. I feel ...

Tonight, two of the top 18 were eliminated on So You Think You Can Dance. The show opened with the usual introduction of everyone. Tappers again demanded more attention with their noisy sequences, and Victor demonstrated a unique spin series with his free leg going from second position to a flexed open second all the way up to a bent knee, turned out. It was very cool, although it won't earn him extra points. Nigel, Adam, and Mary are back (no Paula) to cut away two dancers without a separate episode. Noelle may be back, but Billy definitely won't. I think we may have lost the winner of Season 6 to swine flu/mono or a serious illness.
