Julia is inspired to write a new Broadway musical about Marilyn Monroe, and as casting starts aspiring actress Karen sees her chance to make her acting dreams come true, though she faces stiff competition from established Broadway star Ivy.
The Callback
Director Derek Wills tries to decide whether he can coach Karen into becoming the actress he needs or whether he should go with the safer choice of Ivy. Julia and her husband Frank go through the steps to adopt a child, but question whether they still want to adopt.
Enter Mr. Dimaggio
With Marylin cast, the search goes out to find a Joe DiMaggio, and everyone wants Michael, who once had an affair with Julia. Eileen tries to raise the funds to keep the show going, while Karen goes home to Iowa for a baby shower.
The Cost of Art
After a chilly reception, the members of the ensemble take Karen under their wing to show her the ropes. Derek hosts a party for young star Lyle, and Eileen sees a chance to hit Lyle up for financing for the musical.
Let's Be Bad
Karen finds a new use for her acting talents as she joins Dev at a high-powered government party. The drama between Michael and Julia heats up, as Eileen and Tom's ambitious assistant Ellis forge an alliance. Ivy senses trouble in her relationship with Derek.
Chemistry
Ivy has voice problems and is encouraged to take risky drugs to help it, while Eileen bonds with Ellis, Julia an Michael start a new affair, and Karen takes a gig at a bar mitzvah that could lead to bigger things.
The Workshop
The workshop goes forward, but things don't go smoothly with a high studio temperature and performance mishaps forcing everyone to rethink the show.
The Coup
Derek brings Karen on to take the musical in a new direction apart from Tom and Julia's vision. Eileen's daughter Katie drops in for a visit.
Hell On Earth
Tom and Julia work on a title as the focus shifts to finding a star for the Marylin musical. Karen and Ivy go against each other for a commercial audition, and Frank learns about Julia's infidelity.
Understudy
Waiting for the show's new movie star to arrive, Derek makes Karen the understudy, forcing her to perform the lead under difficult circumstances. Tom and Julia celebrate the anniversary of their partnership, but Julia is distracted by her failing marriage.
The Movie Star
Movie star Rebecca Duvall arrives to take over the role of Marilyn, but quickly unsettles the production with all of her suggested changes and vocal limitations. Karen finds her relationship strained as her boyfriend keeps secrets from her.

Karen is tempted by the celebrity lifestyle while spending time with Rebecca Duvall.Eileen introduces Nick to her ex, while Leo goes missing and Julia must track him down.
Tech
As "Bombshell" goes into tech rehearsals, the producers are forced to bring Michael Swift back on the production even though Julia threatens to quit. Derek tries to handle Rebecca Duvall, while Karen must choose between the show and Dev.
Previews
A initial performance of "Bombshell" prompts Eileen to demand the show's ending be changed, while Rebecca Duvall falls ill after apparently being poisoned.
Bombshell
Derek chooses Karen to be his Marilyn for the opening night of the show, while Ellis reveals his part in sabotaging Rebecca Duvall, and Ivy and Dev's dalliance comes to light.
