5 Best and 5 Worst Live Action TV Series Based On Comics

8/30/2012 4:07pm EDT
The Walking Dead
Expectations are high for Joss Whedon's SHIELD live-action superhero series. While animated series based on comics have flourished ever since Batman: The Animated series broke onto the scene in the early 90s, live-action shows based on comic books are hit-or-miss. They require a larger budget to showcase super powers and outlandish costumes and mutants. Despite this, we were able to point out the five best live action TV shows based on comics - and managed to cut down the worst to five.

The Best:

1. The Incredible Hulk: This TV took its comic book source seriously, and the show profited...

Attention TV geeks: the Paley Center for Media has something you're going to want to see.

That includes popular concluded series like ER, The West Wing, Friends, Cold Case, Smallville, Seinfeld, and Deadwood, as well as current series such as Pretty Little Liars and Southland.

On my recent visit, I was able t...

Q&A: Sam Witwer Back For More 'Being Human'

1/11/2012 11:10am EST
Sam Witwer
You've got to keep your eye on Sam Witwer.

As the vampire Aidan on SyFy's Being Human, he could take a bite out of you if he wanted. But offscreen, the Battlestar Galactica veteran's wit as is sharp as his alter-ego's fangs. He's also a man of multiple talents, not only an actor but a musician.

As Being Human starts its second season on January 16, Sam sat down with me to discuss what's next for his character, what he's up to when the cameras aren't rolling, and if being a sci-fi success also allows him to be a fanboy.

"It's interesting," he said of coming back for a sophomore run. "We a...

TV Goodbye: Shows That Ended & Shows That Were Cancelled In 2011

Canceled and Ended Shows in 2011
Ask the typical American to name 20 currently airing primetime television shows and they probably can't without doing some serious thinking. They'd probably even ramble off a few that were cancelled during the year or the year before without even realizing it.

In 2011 a myriad of television shows come to an end with over 80 leaving the airwaves, most of which you probably never even heard of (some were so small we didn't even include them in this year-end roundup).

Some had tearful goodbyes after long runs (Oprah, Big Love, Rescue Me), and others were canceled so fast we hardly even knew ...

'Chuck' Recap: 'Chuck Versus The Bearded Bandit' (5.02)

11/5/2011 12:04am EDT
Season five of Chuck got off to a good start with last week's season premiere. It keeps rolling this week, with a second episode that starts to lay out where the final year is headed.

This week, we meet the competition: Verbanski Corp, led by Gertrude Verbanski (that's The Matrix star Carrie-Anne Moss, sounding like she's narrating a Cyberdyne advert). She used to work for the KGB, and Casey really doesn't like her, having had a nasty run-in (and subsequent fling) with her in 1995. Since then, she's put together a whole compound of minions, and is out to recruit a few more from Tea...

Earlier this year she was ranked number 8 in the 2011 FHM list of "100 Sexiest Women in the World."

She had bit parts in films such as "Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo," "Piranha 3D," and "Smallville."

After 10 years, Smallville is airing its final episode tonight on The CW. The two-hour finale will wrap up the journey of Clark Kent, so he can finally emerge as the Superman we know. Producers Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders reflected on their years in Smallville as the end of it all approached.

'Smallville' Recap: "Dominion"

4/30/2011 5:07pm EDT
Kneeling before Zod
SMALLVILLE Recap: 10.19: “Dominion”: Lois and Clark are moving into their new Metropolis apartment, where issues of super speed and Lois’ Whitesnake t-shirt pillow are superceded by bad news from Tess. Slade Wilson has been released from the Phantom Zone (where he was unceremoniously sent by the Blur in episode 10.11, “Icarus”). The question is, How?, as only someone from the House of El can use the crystals that confine or release evildoers to Jor-El’s otherworldly prison.

The League convenes at Watchtower, where Oliver hitches a ride with Clark into the Phantom Zone to help him solve th...

'Smallville' Recap: 'Booster'

4/23/2011 2:25pm EDT
SMALLVILLE Recap: 10.18: “Booster”: On their way to work at the Daily Planet, Lois gives Clark lessons on how to improve his new, mild-mannered, glasses-sporting, slumped-shouldered, clumsy persona. If the Blur is going to go public and show his face, then people can’t be noticing that he looks and acts just like Clark Kent.

Just then, a teenager falls in front of an SUV bearing the logo “Kord Industries,” but before the Blur can speed to the rescue, the save is made by a preening toothpaste-ad of a superhero plastered with endorsement patches on his blue and gold costume. Posing for the c...

'Smallville' Recap: 'Kent'

4/16/2011 7:07pm EDT
It’s another late night at the Daily Planet for Lois Lane when Clark comes whooshing in with boxes of Chinese food (direct from Bangkok, where the Blur was helping with some flood cleanup). Going through the mail, Clark finds a pre-wedding present from his mother: the deed to the Kent farm. But is it the gift meant to be a home or a dowry?

Speaking of the farm, a flash of light brings the evil Clark Luthor following his father to our Earth from the alternate dimension (last seen in Episode 10) where the Blur… or rather, Ultraman is the world’s most wanted villain, not its greatest hero. W...

He is currently on bail ahead of his sentencing and not allowed to leave America, but filed ...

'Smallville' Recap: 'Scion'

3/7/2011 5:14am EST
SMALLVILLE Recap: 10.16: “Scion”: Tess drops by the Kent farm with a surprise for Clark: Alexander. Or, as he is now called, Conner (from Cognitional Neuroplastic Replicant). Tess says that the “rebooted” Conner, who has no memory of his diabolical origin, needs a mentor, and Clark is the perfect candidate. Clark thinks that’s a bad idea, being that Conner is a genetically engineered clone of Lex Luthor. But it turns out that Lex’s DNA is only half the strand: the other half comes from Clark.

Conner, feeling alone and confused by his nascent abilities, doesn’t think that Clark is suitable ...

'Smallville' Recap: "Masquerade"

2/19/2011 12:56pm EST
No blur here
SMALLVILLE Recap: 10.14: “Masquerade”: At the Daily Planet, Lois is on the phone with Clark, discussing the complications surrounding their impending nuptials. She’s concerned that, with the VRA repealed and the league out in the open, someone might recognize that the groom’s side is filled with superheroes. Perhaps, then, she shouldn’t be using cardboard figures of Green Arrow, Aquaman, Impulse, et al in their costumes as she plans the church seating (?) in a public place? Further complicating matters is the fact that the Blur’s new non-blurring public persona is showing up on the internet...

Star TV Couples for Valentine's Day 2011

2/14/2011 9:31am EST
The Good Wife
The marriage relationship is the staple and backbone of our society—and the same goes for the TV Land universe. Besides the requisite cop and law shows and all the TV trends in between that have come and gone, marriage and family shows have always been the rock. As television shows have evolved (and censorship has denigrated) so have the way couples have been shown relating to each other. Lucy and Ricky Ricardo (I Love Lucy) slept in twin beds and Lucy most times resorted to manipulation to get her way, or she whined and cried until she did. Mike and Carol Brady (The Brady Bunch) never had ...

'Smallville' Recap: Collateral

2/5/2011 6:46pm EST
Chloe returns
When we last saw our heroes, they were lying unconscious on the floor of an Egyptian temple at Hawkman’s funeral. And yet somehow, we pick up in the Kent farm kitchen, where Lois is on the phone with the Vigilante Registration Act Hotline (really?) desperately trying to find information on her fiancée’s whereabouts. Clark walks through the door, announces he’s been released by the VRA (does the A now stand for Administration?), but the reunion is bittersweet as he reveals that the government has somehow found a way to take away his super powers.

And Clark’s not the only one; Black Canary (...
