Fall TV Progress Report: Grading 10 New And Returning Shows

Fall is one of my favorite times of year, and it’s not because of everything from, lattes to cakes, is pumpkin-flavored and stores are stuffed with caramel apples. It’s because there is a fresh, shiny crop of new and returning shows to devour. Most shows are at least three episodes in, so it’s time to grade 10 new and returning shows to gauge their progress in this burgeoning season.

Dedicated to expanding its network and channel brands across multiple platforms and connecting viewers with their favorite shows anytime and anywhere, Disney-ABC Television Group announced today that it will add the remaining unaired episodes of Six Degrees to ABC.com's broadband player.

The first unaired episode of Six Degrees will be added to ABC.com on Friday, April 27, with a new episode added every Friday for four consecutive weeks (five episodes total).

ABC Announces Premiere Of 'October Road' & Return Of 'Six Degrees'

ABC has announced that the new drama series "October Road" will premiere Thursday, March 15 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET). Men In Trees will return in this timeslot following an initial run of the new series. In addition, Six Degrees will return with original episodes in a new time slot, Fridays at 9:00 p.m., as of Friday, March 23.

'Men In Trees' Moves To Thursdays, Gets Full-Season Order

Men In Trees is moving to Thursday nights at 10:00 p.m., ET, as of November 30, ABC Entertainment announced. In addition, the series has been picked up for a full season order. "Men In Trees" will air in that timeslot through December, and Six Degrees will return with all original episodes in January 2007.

"We love these two shows and are excited at the promise they have shown," said Stephen McPherson, president, ABC Entertainment. "Thursdays will be a great platform for 'Men In Trees' to reach a larger audience."

Networks Announce Sweeps Schedule for Nov. 1-29

CBS, ABC and NBC just announced their schedules for November sweeps. During "sweeps," Nielsen Media Research sends out diaries to sample homes across the country so TV viewers can record the shows they watched. Based on these results, networks set their advertising rates. The more people watch a show, the more they can charge for the commercials during it.

NAACP Points Out Lack of Diversity on TV

According to the NAACP, with the cancellation of the Bernie Mac Show, for the first time in recent history, there is not a comedy with an African-American lead character left on the big four networks. When it comes to returning sitcoms and the announced new comedies, African Americans are missing in action.

While the genre is not as popular as it once was, there is not a shortage of sitcoms on the schedule. Out of the nearly 20 sitcoms on network television this fall, it is unconscionable that there is not an African American lead among them.
