What Killed 'Jezebel James': The Timeslot, Laughtrack & Parker Posey

March 26th, 2008 9:24am EDT
Jezebel James
I suppose Jezebel James only wanted to stay for a short return. After a mere three episodes, and ratings that made "Arrested Development" look like "American Idol," FOX dropped the ax on what was once its hotly-anticipated sitcom "Jezebel James."

At the network up fronts back in May 2007, "James" was highly lauded and seen by FOX as a potential tent-pole sitcom around which an entire evening of programming could be built. It seemed like a surefire hit when the series received a full 13-episode order right off the bat and was slated to debut in the coveted timeslot following "American ...

All The Elements Are In Place For 'Jezebel James' To Be A Quality Sitcom

March 18th, 2008 8:44am EDT
The Return of Jezebel James
"The Return of Jezebel James" debuted this week with a two-part premiere featuring the pilot and the series' second episode. FOX, in their infinite wisdom, chose to bury these first two installments in the abyss of the Friday night timeslot, which is really a shame as the series begins on a very strong note.

"James" is the return to television for Amy Sherman-Palladino. She is best as the auteur behind "Gilmore Girls". Previously she wrote for more conventional sitcoms including "Roseanne" and "Veronica's Closet." Her new show brings many of the elements from "Gilmore Girls" into th...

There May Be Cracks, But The Comedy Glass Ceiling Still Exists For Women

March 14th, 2008 3:00pm EDT
Parker Posey
In this town (Los Angeles) and this industry (entertainment), there are a handful of strong, intelligent, funny women who - once they finally broke onto the radar - have worked consistently in equally strong, intelligent, funny roles.

After reading this month's "Who Says Women Aren't Funny" issue of Vanity Fair, it is impossible not to notice just how many beyond the current "it" girls of comedy were left off that list (which included funnygirls such as Tina Fey, Sarah Silverman and Amy Poehler). This is an attempt to rectify that and garner them the recognition they so rightly dese...

Julianna Margulies

New Amsterdam (FOX, 9 p.m.) - Okay, this is the immortal detective's regular timeslot. Thanks for making it as confusing as possible, FOX.

Medium (NBC, 10 p.m.) - Don't you hate it when your in-laws show up? At least they're not showing up as visions from the beyond like Allison's mother-in-law (Kathy Baker).

High School Confidential (WE, 10 p.m.) - Filmmaker ...

Award-winning actress Dianne Wiest will have a recurring role on The Return Of Jezebel James, the new Amy Sherman-Palladino comedy premiering midseason on FOX. Wiest plays "Talia," the mother of Sarah (Parker Posey) and Coco (Lauren Ambrose) Tompkins.

The Return Of Jezebel James follows Sarah Tompkins (Posey), who has everything a fancy girl could want in life: her own imprint at HarperCollins' children's division; a big brownstone in Hoboken; a young, energetic and only slightly terrified assistant, Buddy (Michael Arden); and a perfect, no-strings-attached relationship with successful...
