Missy Peregrym: Still Proud To Be 'Rookie Blue'

June 15th, 2011 5:00pm EDT
Rookie Blue
In just over a week (June 23), ABC's Canadian import Rookie Blue returns for its second season - so it's also the perfect time to get the dish from Missy Peregrym, who leads the cast as would-be supercop Andy McNally. Missy dropped by recently to talk about where Andy is headed in season two, the impact the role has had on her life, and who her heroes are.

You can also check out my recent interview with Missy's Rookie Blue costar Enuka Okuma.

The rookies now have their first year under their belts - so what will be happening with Andy in season two, now that she's no longer technic...

Lots Of Laughs To Be Found In 'Sons of Tucson'

March 15th, 2010 4:18pm EDT
Sons of Tucson
In these tough economic times, there's been a noticeable theme of penny-pinching floating across network television. Sons of Tucson, a mid-season entry from FOX, stars Tyler Labine (Reaper) as Ron, a down-on-his-luck schmo who is recruited by three kids to play their dad. Their father is in prison for some kind of financially-related crime, so they move to Arizona where he keeps a house. They need to get accepted into school so that people don't ask questions, and that's where Ron comes in. Yes, in this show, the kids are responsible, while the 30-something is the slob. And a desperate one ...

The Syfying Of Science Fiction Is Both Good & Bad

August 29th, 2009 2:00pm EDT
True Blood
Everyone seems really into vampires lately. Sexy vampires that have steamy vampire sex with each other all the time. If not vampires than it's people with psychic abilities (Psych) or people that travel through alternate dimensions. And that's just on television. These days a major blockbuster movie can't make a return without aliens (District 9), killer robots (Transformers) or wizards (Harry Potter). We live in a time where Quentin Tarantino is playing with alternate history (Inglourious Basterds) and weepy chick flicks are about time travel (The Time Traveler's Wife).

What To Watch In March? Spotlight On Mid-Season Shows

March 4th, 2009 9:37am EST
Cupid
Once upon a time in a magical land called Hollywood, harried and somewhat unkempt writers bit their nails down to the quick awaiting news on if their pilots would receive full season orders, be given solid "Nos," or worse: be relegated to the limbo that is "mid-season replacement" territory.

Such shows aren't guaranteed to air at all, particularly if the initial fall line-up (the shows that network executives felt had the most potential) succeeds. And if mid-season shows do get a shot after premature cancellations, there is no guarantee they will find an audience, considering so many ...

TV Year In Review: The Best, The Worst & The In Between

December 26th, 2008 7:31am EST
Breaking Bad
In a year that saw the writers strike bring forth more reality TV than we ever thought possible and reduce quality drama to a war of attrition, the boob tube still managed to deliver quality drama series at an impressive clip.

BEST TV DRAMAS OF 2008

5. "BREAKING BAD" (AMC) - The aforementioned strike meant we only got seven episodes of former "X-Files" writer Vince Gilligan's masterful meth-strewn series, but after enduring its visceral fury, could we have really taken anymore?

Unlike another suburban drug dealing series, the torpid "Weeds", "Breaking Bad" offers a modern-d...

The Most Underrated And Overrated Things About The 2007-08 TV Season

June 20th, 2008 11:08am EDT

The Emmy ballots are in, which means the 2007-08 TV season is officially over. Actually, the TV season officially lasted from June 1st until May 31st, but it doesn't really seem over until now. Now that we've had a few weeks to reflect, we can begin to formulate our opinions, or leave that up to the professionals, about the best and worst of the season gone by.

But that's easy. What about the far more enticing category of the most overrated and underrated? But we shouldn't limit ourselves to TV shows. Things like news stories, performances, and accepted perceptions are all ripe for...

A Memo To Emmy Voters

Starpulse writer Andrew Payne is getting sick of the snubs by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. And even though Katherine Heigl doesn't want to be an Emmy contender this year, there are plenty of deserving shows, actors and actresses that should be recognized. Here are Payne's suggestions for those casting their ballots this week:

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Emmy Voters:

I am writing because I understand your ballots for this year's nominees are due this week. In the past, you've had quite a difficult time selecting the proper honorees. I'm not blaming you. I completely understa...

CW Hopes That New Lineup, '90210' Can Provide Spark In 2008-09

May 14th, 2008 11:32am EDT
Jennie Garth will star on 90210
It's been a rough couple of years for the CW. While execs tout victories in certain small and obscure demos, the fact remains that the network regularly gets outdrawn by more than one basic cable network. Despite that, there was a sense of optimism as the network unveiled its 2008-2009 schedule yesterday.

Like with ABC, there were few surprises on the CW schedule. Most of the established shows will be returning, and those that were canceled will not be missed (with the exception of dear departed "Aliens in America"). Even "Reaper," which has been on the bubble for nearly the entire...

Five Television Remakes We'd Like To See, But Probably Won't

January 14th, 2008 4:27pm EST
The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.
Ahh, the remake. The feelings that are evoked when you hear that your favorite program from yesteryear is being re-thought, re-vamped and re-launched for the new generation are hard to describe. Sure, remakes are almost inevitably likely to fail, but so what? That doesn't make their possibility any less tantalizing.

TV remakes don't happen often, although when they do they tend to come in waves. The crest of the latest remake wave seems to be ominously hovering right over our heads as recent launches of "Bionic Woman," "American Gladiators" and the soon-to-be debuting "Knight Ride...

'Pushing Daisies' is Odd, But Ultimately Endearing

Pushing Daisies
It's Not 'CSI: Couer d'Couers'

In the current TV era, truly original shows don't appear all that often on the broadcast networks. If and when they do, they usually aren't around for very long. "Pushing Daisies," a quirky amalgamation of a fairytale and film noir, is the latest offbeat offering to bow on the Big Four. Comparatively speaking, it has done fairly well thus far.

"Daisies" comes from the creative mind of Bryan Fuller, whose unique body of work includes the odd "Wonderfalls" and darkly comedic "Dead Like Me." It is the story of a pie maker named Ned (Lee Pace), who as a...

Buffy 2: The Hellmouth Strikes Back?

Due to the supernatural element of the show and its deft mix of horror and lighthearted comedy, "Reaper" has been compared to "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" by critics and couch potatoes alike. While Joss Whedon's masterpiece is often referenced when discussing new shows, the comparison actually makes some sense in this case.

Sam is an ordinary youth who one day is thrust into a supernatural world and presented with a quest. His life is suddenly anything but mundane. He has to keep the mission a secret, although he does have several trusted f...

As a result, Sam skipped college, took a dead-end job at the local Work Bench home improvement store and now wastes endless hours playing video games. Everything in his slacker world changed the day Sam turned 21 and discovered the ungodly reason his parents let him slide: they s...
