10 TV Series You Must Catch Up On Before Fall 2012

July 17th, 2012 4:00pm EDT
The Walking Dead
You know the feeling. Everyone at the office talks about how great (insert TV show here) was, and you don't watch it. By the time you figure out how good the show is, it's too late to catch up.

Well, there's still time to watch some of last season's popular shows on DVD, Netflix, on demand or online, particularly if they're only half-hour comedies or 10-episode seasons.

First, check out AMC's "The Walking Dead." As the show progresses, more people are tuning in. About 9 million viewers tuned in to see the second season finale in March - 50 percent more than those who watched the first sea...

TV Ratings: CBS Dominates With 12 Of The Top 20 Shows

May 24th, 2012 12:33pm EDT
Mike & Molly
If the latest TV ratings week was a final exam, CBS would get an A+ and NCIS would graduate at the top of the class. The stalwart once again topped the Nielsen ratings, besting all other scripted and reality programming, even as American Idol geared up for its finale.

‘NCIS’ attracted over 19 million viewers and spinoff NCIS: Los Angeles got over 15 million. By comparison, the Wednesday and Thursday editions of "Idol' attracted 17.7 million and 16.4 million, respectively.

CBS had 12 of the Top 20 shows, including Person of Interest, The Mentalist and How I Met Your Mother. Mike & Molly ac...

CBS series Elementary
CBS just announced its new 2012-2013 primetime schedule, which includes four new series. The network is also making four key time period moves.

Nina Tassler, President, CBS Entertainment, commented, "These new series feature a great range of bold concepts, rich characters, big stars and fresh faces. From a new take on Sherlock Holmes to an epic battle for control of 1960s Las Vegas to a working-class point of view in a prestigious law firm, the dramas each have a unique style and sensibility."

The new series are:

TV Ratings: CBS, FOX Dominate, PBS Impresses With 'Sherlock'

May 8th, 2012 8:36pm EDT
Sherlock
CBS dominated the ratings last week with 14 of the Top 25 programs. But FOX managed to tie it in the 18-49 demo with a 2.2 rating. ‘NCIS’ was tops again, while ‘American Idol’ performed quite strongly, particularly on Wednesday.

‘The Big Bang Theory’ performed well for CBS, making it the most-watched comedy and the third-most watched scripted program after both ‘NCIS’ shows. ‘Person of Interest’ and ‘The Mentalist’ also placed in the Top 10 for the network.

NBC had to settle for 20th place for ‘The Voice,’ its only program to crack the overall Top 20. ABC, meanwhile, found success with ‘M...

TV Ratings: 'Dancing On Top,' 'Game Of Thrones' Hits Season High

May 2nd, 2012 10:07am EDT
'The Big Bang Theory'
CBS, per usual, has reason to celebrate this week. While some of its programs, such as NCIS, were in reruns and attracted fewer viewers than usual, others soared. ‘Person of Interest’ has maintained the momentum it’s been gaining this season and was the network’s top show in 5th place with nearly 13 million viewers. ‘The Big Bang Theory,’ also airing on Thursday, also did well.

‘Dancing With the Stars’ was the top show of the week, while the results show placed 4th. ‘American Idol’ placed 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Since going live, ‘The Voice’ continues to slip, coming in at #11 with just...

TV Ratings: Hoops Are Tops, 'Person Of Interest' Stays Strong

April 11th, 2012 10:08am EDT
Dancing With The Stars
Boy, this was a pretty uneventful Ratings week. The NCAA finale was tops, not surprisingly. In a sea of repeats, ‘American Idol’ fared well, while CBS’ ‘Person of Interest’ continues to climb, and was in fact the network’s top-rated scripted show last week.

On the reality side, ‘Dancing With the Stars’ continues to perform fairly well, and is obviously a boon to ABC. The network didn’t have much to cheer about, aside from ‘Castle’ riding the former show’s lead-in. And NBC has cause to be worried about ‘The Voice,’ which continues to fall. Once competitive with ‘American Idol,’ this week it...

Q&A: Ashley and David Eckstein Celebrate Fandom With 'Her Universe'

March 21st, 2012 11:15am EDT
Her Universe
One of the joys of fandom is being able to share your passions. And thanks to Ashley and David Eckstein, that just got a lot easier (and cooler) for women.

Representing one's fandoms can be a difficult task for the female gender. I say that from experience; I'm all about showing off my allegiances. One of those happens to be to the San Diego Padres, and I went on a rant when there wasn't a T-shirt for my favorite second baseman, a certain David Eckstein. You can imagine my delight to hear that someone that I am a huge fan of was making it easier for me to represent the things I love.

As...

TV Ratings: 'American Idol' On Top, But CBS Dominates

March 14th, 2012 9:35am EDT
Person of Interest
‘American Idol’ returned to the top two perches on the weekly ratings chart this week. It seems that the live competition may be helping the sagging series, although a lot of programs were in repeats for the week.

Both editions of ‘Idol’ held off ‘The Voice.’ Wednesday’s ‘Idol’ placed first with 18.7 million viewers, followed by Thursday’s episode with 17.3 million. ‘The Voice’ followed with 16.8. Not too far behind, folks!

‘Person of Interest’ is turning into the “little engine that could” for CBS. With ‘NCIS’ in repeats, ‘Person of Interest’ ranked in the Number 4 slot, the network’s hi...

TV Ratings: Grammys On Top

February 14th, 2012 9:22pm EST
54th Annual GRAMMY Awards
The Grammy Awards attracted a stunning 39.9 million viewers on Sunday, the second-biggest tally in the award show’s history. A number of factors likely contributed to this, not the least of which is Whitney Houston’s death over the weekend. Jennifer Hudson’s soul-stirring rendition of “I Will Always Love You” was a highlight. But that’s no discredit to the red-hot Adele, who took home six awards and gave a show-stopping performance of her own.

Nothing came close to the Grammys’ ratings territory, but ‘American Idol’ held fairly steady from last week, capturing the third and fourth slots of...

Q&A: 'Person of Interest' Star Kevin Chapman

January 26th, 2012 11:00am EST
Kevin Chapman
Veteran actor Kevin Chapman is one of the stars of CBS' new hit Person of Interest, but that's just scratching the surface of his lengthy resume.

Chapman plays Detective Lionel Fusco, a corrupt cop who functions as an NYPD source for John Reese (Jim Caviezel). It's a role that has brought Chapman some much-deserved attention. But die-hard TV fans will have seen his face a dozen times before.

It was Chapman who brought real menace (and yet, surprising humanity on at least one occasion) to the role of an Irish mob boss on Showtime's underrated drama series Brotherhood. He's also appeared on...

It was a huge night for Katy Perry at the People's Choice Awards in Los Angeles on Wednesday - even though the pop star's marriage break-up prevented her from attending.

The I Kissed a Girl star pulled out of the event earlier this week via a tweet but it was still very much her night as she picked up five awards, including one for her guest spot on TV comedy How I Met Your Mother.

Perry also claimed trophies for Favorite Female Artist, Favorite Song of the Year (E.T.), Favorite Music Video (Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)) and Favorite Tour Headliner.

It was also a great evening for the ...

'Supernatural' Recap: Double The Winchesters, Half The Fun

padalecki and ackles
I have a love-hate relationship with spoilers. As a television addict who can barely survive the mere seven days between episodes, I covet the irresistible nuggets of coming attractions. As an invested fan, I want to experience the adventure with the characters and be as shocked and awed as the next unspoiled viewer. It’s a pop culture quagmire. I heard about “Slash Fiction’s” awesome premise weeks ago. The episode had a fabulous potential for badassery, gore and the patented fraternal angst that keeps the fangirls swooning after more than 130 episodes. Sadly, “Slash Fiction”—while ent...

Fall TV: The So-So, The Bad And The Ugly

October 28th, 2011 11:00am EDT
The X Factor
Thanksgiving is a few short weeks away, and before you slice into those turkeys, let’s take a look back at the new TV shows that are thriving and those that don’t have a Thanksgiving prayer. We’ll break it down by category.

Modest Hits

(We would have had a full-on “Hits” category, but there are certainly no runaways so far.) FOX’s ‘New Girl’ can be deemed a first-season success. The Zooey Deschanel comedy was the first fall series to earn a full season pickup, and for good reason: Its ratings are better than lead-in ‘Glee’ and it’s frequently tops on Tuesdays in 18-49. To date it’s ave...

“The Ringer” is about twins. Bridget is a recovering alcoholic on the run from the mob after witnessing a murder. She takes refuge with her twin sister Siobhan, but when Siobhan goes missing and Bridget takes over her life, Bridget realizes that Siobhan’s world isn’t as picture-perfect as it seemed. It also stars Sarah Michelle Gellar (and Sarah Michelle Gellar); marking her first starring television role since “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” Yeah. It’s monumental.
