TV Cancellations, Renewals And Shocks, Oh My!

May 14th, 2011 3:04pm EDT
The Event
They’re goin’ down like flies.

This week, FOX tear-gassed its on-the-bubble shows, and NBC and ABC have taken similar approaches. Either pilot season has produced some very promising material, or the networks are getting violent. Either way, there are a lot of casualties.

Let’s start with the good news: Among shows in trouble, NBC’s ‘Chuck’ has been renewed for one more season, but the caveat is that it’s just one more season, and a 13-episode one at that. Still, it’ll provide plenty of closure for fans. NBC’s ‘Parenthood’ was also granted another wish from the network’s genie, with i...

Reigning Men: Five Favorite Male TV Characters

May 2nd, 2011 1:00pm EDT
Steve McGarrett Alex O'Loughlin
The birds are chirping. The flowers are blooming. The temperatures are rising. All these wonderful changes herald the most beloved and bittersweet time of year for this lover of pop culture: May sweeps. While I’m all atwitter with excitement about the final episodes of my favorite shows (Seriously, I tweet about it.), I’m almost inconsolable over the impending loss when regular season shows go into hiatus. And I’m not talking about nuanced plotlines or even the hook-up no one saw coming. No, what I will miss the most are the pecs and abs, the swagger and snark of my favorite male char...

NBC Fall Season Preview: Spies, CIA Plots And Outsourcing

September 20th, 2010 11:45am EDT
NBC Fall Preview
NBC is likely getting tired of being referred to as "fourth place NBC." Last year's Jay Leno experiment was clearly a disaster and served as a boon for TBS, which won the Conan sweepstakes. This fall, NBC has fresher programming. With aging favorites and risky new underdogs, does the network have a shot at moving up the ratings ladder, even to third place? Time will tell. Stranger things have happened. Here's a look at what new shows could make the grade and what's in store for old favorites.

Pilot Recap: The Who’s Who And What’s What Of 'Parenthood'

March 4th, 2010 9:27am EST
Parenthood
The premiere of the ensemble dramedy “Parenthood” felt a lot like a typical family gathering – some parts are good, some parts are bad, and you’re full by the time you leave. In this Pilot episode, we met about 20 characters in as many minutes, and spent the rest of the hour sorting out who was who, as a whole lot of plot points began to materialize. In summary, here’s what we learned:

At the top of the Braverman family tree are Zeek and Camille played by Craig T. Nelson and Bonnie Bedelia. The senior-most Mom and Dad in the ‘hood have four adult children, who are now in various stages of...
