Outlaw Star, Episode 10: Gathering for the Space Race

Jim, Gene, Melfina, and Suzuka make port at Heifong. Gene dismisses Jim's distress over the exorbitant cost of dock fees with a wave of his hand, as "something good will come up." Gene's goal is to enter the space race. He fishes for information about the race at the organizers offices, then attempts to snag a date with the beautiful agent. Gene hopes to confirm that the McDougalls have entered with their mysterious ship. One small matter -- 150,000 wong -- stands in the way of the Outlaw Star being entered in the race. Over a bowl of noodles, Gene discusses his options with Jim. Melfina chills; Suzuka radiates indifference. She isn't interested in racing and takes a powder. To raise the entry fee and expenses, Gene seeks a sponsorship from Fred Luo, who is only too happy to help. One condition: if the Outlaw Star finishes in the money, the debt is cleared. If not, the total is added to Gene's tab. Fred casually mentions that the Kei pirates are looking for Melfina, though he doesn't know why. Gene and Jim leave the Outlaw Star to attend a pre-race party, so Melfina and Gilliam conspire to learn more about Melfina's past. Gene tries to find McDougall at the party but runs into another familiar face instead. Possibly because he fears resistance, Gene witholds information about the race from Gilliam until the last minute. Amazingly, Gilliam is excited about the opportunity to show off the Outlaw Star's power. Waiting at the starting line, Gene scans for McDougall's ship. When it arrives, Gene's attempts to communicate are rebuffed. A mysterious bearded onlooker recognizes the Outlaw Star by her original name, but reveals little else. In pursuit of the McDougalls and first place in the space race, Gene commits the Outlaw Star to a very dangerous course. Tom Carroll, All Movie Guide
