Outlaw Star, Episode 01: Outlaw World

In Outlaw Star: Episode 1: Outlaw World, "Ice" Hilda, a renegade outlaw, fights for her life against a band of interstellar pirates, only just managing to escape to a nearby backwater planet. Cut to Gene Starwind, a sly-talking, roguish ladies man and the biggest bounty hunter on that very same backwater planet. After dropping a vengeful cyborg in his tracks in the local bar, Starwind muses to a "date" that he'd like to travel into space to chase pirates. Later, Starwind and his kid-sized assistant, Jim Hawking, accept a contract to help and protect a woman named Rachell Sweet. Pursued by the same space pirates who were after Hilda, Sweet launches Starwind and Hawking into some serious trouble. Gene and Jim first make use of conventional projectile weapons to extricate themselves from attacks by the tallest of the bad guys, a master of powerful Tao magic. After traditional methods fail, only a very special weapon -- a Caster Gun -- can break through the Tao master's mystical shield and deliver an appropriately devastating knockout blow. Meanwhile, it's become apparent that Rachell isn't as sweet as she once appeared to be. Trying to adapt to her new identity plays havoc with the good guys' ability to focus on the tasks at hand. In the end, it's crucial that Gene and Jim hold off the space pirates, since they have to buy time for the contents of their client's suitcase. Episode 1 closes out, as they say, with a bang.
