'Once Upon A Time' Season 3 Premiere: 'Heart Of The Truest Believer'

September 30th, 2013 9:20am EDT
Having had a chance to screen both the season premiere and second episode of Once Upon A Time’s third season, I can safely say that we’re off to a start reminiscent of where we were when the series premiered in 2011. It’s not that last season wasn’t enjoyable, or that episodes didn’t hit their mark. But the darker storytelling and the change in scenery by moving the primary focus to Neverland was a welcome revitalization that was, in hindsight, sorely needed.

I’ve talked about how sometimes it’s been hard for the show to maintain a sense of linear storytelling because of the way the worlds...

2013 Fall TV Preview: The Returning Shows On ABC

September 3rd, 2013 11:46am EDT
Modern Family
Welcome to Week 2 of the 2013 Fall TV Preview. ABC kicks things off for the third year in a row. I wrote about the critics disdain for ABC president Paul Lee last week, but they acknowledge ABC's success with its veteran shows. Revenge and Once Upon A Time enter season three this month. Grey's Anatomy is entering its tenth season. Castle's on season six. The Neighbors and Nashville got a second season. ABC struggles to develop and maintain new shows. I don't know why. How futile is network analysis with the growth of streaming services such as Hulu and Netflix? Network analysis is interesti...

'Once Upon A Time' Season 2 Finale Recap: 'And Straight On Til Morning'

May 13th, 2013 1:54pm EDT
Once Upon A Time
What do you do when you’ve got an over abundance of characters, a few mythology based plotlines and 22 episodes worth of story to tie up? If you’re Once Upon A Time, you open a portal and…send your main characters on a pirate ship to Neverland.

My prediction for the end of the season (bold might it have been) was that the fail-safe for the curse would be activated, Storybrooke would be destroyed, and everyone would be saved but also be forced to start over - say, in Neverland. Despite Greg and Tamara’s best efforts (and a rather close call), Storybrooke didn’t get destroyed, and Regina (wi...

'Once Upon A Time': 'Second Star To The Right'

May 6th, 2013 8:34am EDT
Once Upon A Time
The penultimate episode of Once found us exploring a new world – Neverland – as well as mourning the death of a character that we’ve grown accustomed to seeing in Storybrooke. Though there’s no real proof that Neal is actually, 100% dead (I’ve learned to be skeptical when it comes to showrunners who previously were involved in a series that showed characters cheating deaths quite often), his sacrifice was enough to shake Emma, who now has to deal with something no parent should ever have to deal with  - telling their son his father is no longer alive.

Neal’s death, while possibly predicted...

'Once Upon A Time' Recap: 'The Evil Queen'

April 30th, 2013 11:47am EDT
once evil
In preparation for next week’s first of the two-part finale, “The Evil Queen” took us back to where it all started – both in terms of the series and in terms of the season as a whole. Once began its second season with a clear focus on redemption -specifically, redemption for such “evil” characters as Regina and Rumple. Throughout the past few months, we’ve watched Regina’s continued struggle between good and evil and this episode brought that conflict to a head, showing how far Regina has fallen among her peers.

We know Regina as the “Evil Queen,” yet we also know (and have been shown) tha...

'Once Upon A Time' Recap: 'Lacey'

April 22nd, 2013 8:25am EDT
Once Upon A Time
After a month long break, Once Upon A Time kicked off its run of the final four episodes of season two by laying new ground with plotlines and developments that will certainly become vital to the culmination of most of the main characters’ journeys this season. “Lacey” gave us a bit of everything – a fun (and sexy!) Emilie de Ravin, a new character (hi, Robin Hood) and more backstory on the history of Belle and Rumple when Rumple was still a “beast” of a man. But at the heart of it all, “Lacey” was really about setting the stage for the crumbling of what has been somewhat of a redemption ar...

'Once Upon A Time' Recap: Selfless, Brave And True

March 25th, 2013 9:28am EDT
selfless brave and true
With the story of Eion Bailey’s August/Pinocchio largely unexplored after he began turning back into wood, we were left wondering exactly what became of everyone’s favorite non-real boy (apparently he’s been hiding out in an abandoned VW-like trailer in the middle of the forest.) While “Selfless, Brave and True” was one of the weakest episode of the season so far, the last hour before a 3-week hiatus did finally give us some insight into August’s past life, as well as the life of mysterious Tamara (Sonequa Martin-Green.) We’ve wondered from the beginning if Neal’s fiancée is more than what ...

'Once Upon A Time' Recap: Welcome To Storybrooke

March 18th, 2013 9:29am EDT
Since we were dropped into the Once Upon A Time world last season, we’ve known little about the history surrounding Storybrooke’s days before Emma found her way over. “Welcome To Storybrooke” served as an introduction to the past, showing us the town in the time directly following Regina’s curse, while giving us further history into the life of Madam Mayor.

After a few weeks of intense episodes centering on familial relations, it was nice to return to an hour more grounded in characters and relationships that we’ve been familiar with since the beginning – and to see Regina happy, even if i...

'Once Upon A Time' Recap: 'The Miller's Daughter'

March 11th, 2013 9:16am EDT
The Miller's Daughter
The crux of Once Upon A Time has always centered on the battle between good and evil and “The Miller’s Daughter” brought that to the forefront with an episode that was a game changer for both a major character and the show itself.

Prior to the episode’s airing, it was teased that “one would die” – and while there were a few cast members who could have fit this bill given their circumstances, in the end, it was Regina’s mother who was the hour’s casualty. With this development, “The Miller’s Daughter” effectively closed out Cora’s storyline as well as the parental storyline that had been ha...

'Once Upon a Time': Season Two Premieres With Magic and Angst

October 2nd, 2012 9:38am EDT
The cast of Once Upon a Time.
The second season of the hit TV show “Once Upon a Time” premiered on Sunday, September 30th, with a new character walking the rainy streets of a busy city – obviously, not the sleepy town of Storybrooke. A post card on his windowsill from Storybrooke read “Broken,” cuing the opening credits and a Dementor-looking creature of Harry Potter fame in the familiar woods behind the show title.

The premiere story begins with two riders traveling through rugged terrain, towards an Arabian-style castle complete with yet another sleeping woman. “If this works, we don’t tell anyone right away,” the da...

5 TV Villians We Love To Hate

September 29th, 2012 4:00pm EDT
Joffrey Baratheon
Ah, the villain. Where would our hero be without this pesky nemesis? A well-crafted villain is essential to a compelling story; characters like Montgomery Burns ("The Simpsons") and Ben Linus ("LOST") help create a rich universe we lose ourselves in.

But what of those other villains? You know the ones…those wretched little knaves that are just begging to be stabbed in the cornea with a rusty thumbtack. We love them! In honor of the delectably flawed, we're sharing our picks for the top five TV villains we just love to hate:

1. Joffrey Baratheon, "Game of Thrones"

Yeah, we know this is...

10 TV Series You Must Catch Up On Before Fall 2012

July 17th, 2012 4:00pm EDT
The Walking Dead
You know the feeling. Everyone at the office talks about how great (insert TV show here) was, and you don't watch it. By the time you figure out how good the show is, it's too late to catch up.

Well, there's still time to watch some of last season's popular shows on DVD, Netflix, on demand or online, particularly if they're only half-hour comedies or 10-episode seasons.

First, check out AMC's "The Walking Dead." As the show progresses, more people are tuning in. About 9 million viewers tuned in to see the second season finale in March - 50 percent more than those who watched the first sea...

April 4th, 2012 10:00am EDT
Once Upon a Time
In Fairy Tale Land, a clumsy fairy-in-training is cautioned by the Blue Fairy to guard her fairy dust carefully. As the two fly off, the clumsy fairy spills some of her dust, which finds its way into an underground hatching facility. The dust causes the egg to hatch early, revealing the dwarf we know as Grumpy.

The He's Just Not That Into You actress plays Snow White opposite Dallas as her Prince Charming, and their on-screen chemistry has allegedly spilled over into real life.

TV Ratings: 'American Idol' On Top, But CBS Dominates

March 14th, 2012 9:35am EDT
Person of Interest
‘American Idol’ returned to the top two perches on the weekly ratings chart this week. It seems that the live competition may be helping the sagging series, although a lot of programs were in repeats for the week.

Both editions of ‘Idol’ held off ‘The Voice.’ Wednesday’s ‘Idol’ placed first with 18.7 million viewers, followed by Thursday’s episode with 17.3 million. ‘The Voice’ followed with 16.8. Not too far behind, folks!

‘Person of Interest’ is turning into the “little engine that could” for CBS. With ‘NCIS’ in repeats, ‘Person of Interest’ ranked in the Number 4 slot, the network’s hi...

10 Favorite Small Screen Scene-Stealers

March 12th, 2012 2:00pm EDT
neil patrick harris
I once had dreams of becoming an Emmy-Winning actress, but thanks to a traumatizing audition for a middle school drama club and being roughly a few inches shy of Snooki-esque shortness, those dreams never panned out. I’m happy to leave the acting to the professionals, and admire their work as a fan and critic. For this television-aholic, there’s nothing better than beholding a great actor who steals every frame of their scenes.

Here is a list of my favorite scene-stealers:

Neil Patrick Harris, “How I Met Your Mother”

Neil Patrick Harris’ portrayal of Barney Stinson, the suit-lovi...

TV Ratings: 'American Idol' Reclaims Top Spot

March 6th, 2012 8:56pm EST
American Idol
It’s like watching Wimbledon. In a back and forth match, ‘American Idol’ gained last week to take three of the top four spots, outpacing ‘The Voice,’ albeit by a small margin. The top ‘Idol’ garnered 18.5 million sets of eyeballs, while ‘The Voice’ had to settle for 14.9 million. The tables may be turned next week, however. Stay tuned.

FOX could also be pleased with the performance of Nascar Daytona 500, with two placements in the Top 10. NBC had only ‘The Voice’ to sing about, while ABC saw its fortunes turn with ‘Modern Family’ in 11th place and the return of ‘Once Upon a Time’ on Sunday...

March 5th, 2012 10:00am EST
Jennifer Morrison
Jennifer Morrison attended PaleyFest 2012 Presents "Once Upon A Time" in Beverly Hills yesterday. Done right, menswear can be striking. We're on the fence about Jennifer's look.

She softened the manly attire with a braided updo and ruby red lips.

Her ABC series was a surprise hit when it debuted in the fall and is one of Sunday night's most popular programs.

Check out more photos of Jennifer, and tell us what you think of her ensemble...

'Supernatural' 7.11 Recap: What About Bobby?

January 7th, 2012 7:56am EST
“Supernatural’s” winter hellatus (as the fans affectionately call it) gave me a lot of time to hypothesize where the show could go from the last moments of “Death’s Door,” where Bobby seemingly headed into the great beyond: Crowley could appear with the last-minute save like the badass King of Hell he is. Castiel could emerge from the waters of the lake, a fully redeemed angel of the Lord, and heal Bobby’s brain. He could've survived but suffered personality-altering brain damage and anemsia. Sam and Dean could have hunter’s funeral, a body burning on the pyre. It's “Supernatural” afte...

New 'Once Upon A Time' Book Offers Clues To Show's Plot

December 24th, 2011 2:12pm EST
Once Upon a Time book
Forget Henry Mills' fairy tale book—‘Once Upon a Time' fans now have their own guide to Storybrooke's mysteries. An eponymously titled new edition of the fairy tales that drive the plots in 'Once Upon a Time' is now available on shelves and via e-tailers.

The 'Once Upon a Time' book includes thirty of the original stories from ‘Grimm's Fairy Tales’, and thus is not a book of the stories as they appear on the hit show. However, the show's creators, Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, have included a foreword that details how the Grimm Brothers' original stories inspired them to create the sho...
