'The Office' Recap: 'Search Committee'

May 21st, 2011 6:32pm EDT
Darryl
Well, there you have it. The new boss on ‘The Office’ is…. Just kidding. No idea.

I didn’t expect we’d find out, and I guess I was right. Still, it can be a little maddening to have such a hyped finale with no payoff. Although, the guest stars sure were interesting.

After Dwight’s disastrous stint as acting manager, and Creed’s delusional antics, it’s clear to Jo a search committee must be formed to find the right boss. More on that in a minute.

But first, Creed. Oh man, does he live up to his title of Creepy Old Man. He has an imaginary valet, calls meetings to an empty room with ...

Top Ten TV Goodbyes: Who Makes The List?

May 20th, 2011 5:00pm EDT
The Office Goodbye Michael
With Steve Carell leaving ‘The Office’ last month, it’s time to reflect on big goodbye episodes. I thought ‘The Office’ pulled off his departure well, although I’m not sure how I feel about the future of the show.

Here’s my top ten list of other shows that have successfully sent a character off in style. The rules: it is a true “goodbye” episode with a major character or star departing. If it happens off-screen, it doesn’t count. So that’s why I’m not including some obvious departures, such as Rhoda Morgenstern, Frank Burns, Coach Pantusso, etc.

Here they are. Do you agree?

'The Office' Recap: 'Dwight K. Schrute, Acting Manager'

May 15th, 2011 12:09pm EDT
The Office
We’re one step closer to finding out who the real manager is going to be on ‘The Office.’ But we’ve still got no clue who that’s going to be. After this episode, we know it’s not Dwight. And we can reasonably assume it’s not Creed.

With Deangelo in a coma, Jo is in a bind. She needs to find an acting manager for the office, even though, as Jim puts it, no one seems to really need a supervisor. He doesn’t want to mess with that, so he turns down her offer. Seconds later, Dwight’s phone rings, and he’s got the job. In a moment of horror, Pam asks her husband, “What have you done?”

What To Watch: Viewers Finally Learn Which ‘Glee’ Cast Member They Will Say Goodbye To Forever (May 15-21, 2011)

May 15th, 2011 11:15am EDT
The number one thing you need to watch this week is “Glee” because after months of speculation, viewers will finally find out which cast member they will say goodbye to forever. That’s right; in case you haven’t heard, one of McKinley High’s own will face an unexpected loss. Cast and crew have been tight-lipped about who is dying, but viewer guesses include Sue’s sister, Puck and Quinn’s daughter, or Kurt’s dad. Of course, this doesn’t mean it couldn’t be one of the regular cast members; ugh, I cringed at the thought!

‘Amazing Race; Unfinished Business’ wraps up with $1 million winner, ent...

'Office' Star Jenna Fischer Is Pregnant

Jenna Fischer
Jenna Fischer already has practice playing pregnant -- now she's ready for the real thing!

A rep for the "Office" star, whose character Pam gave birth last year, tells Us Weekly she and her screenwriter hubby of nearly a year Lee Kirk are expecting their first child together.

The actress bared her bump during a trip to L.A.'s Red O Restaurant Wednesday.

Fischer admitted to Redbook earlier this year that becoming an aunt increased her desire to start a family.

"I already wanted kids, but even more so now," she told the mag. "When Cecelia was 3 weeks old, [my Office character] Pam was ...

Will Ferrell: 'Everything Must Go' Was A New Challenge That I Really Wanted To Try'

May 11th, 2011 6:00pm EDT
Will Ferrell Everything Must Go
Will Ferrell’s new movie is a bit more dramatic than his usual comedies. In Everything Must Go, he plays a man who comes home to find all his belongings on the front lawn after his wife leaves him. He is also an alcoholic so has a few binges in the movie, and Ferrell plays it straight.

“I’m getting the question, were there moments you were tempted to make them funny,” Ferrell said. “I don’t think you can sit down to read a piece of material like this and start earmarking it with ‘Ah, this would be funny. I should barf on myself here. I know how to spice that up.’”

'The Office' Recap: 'The Inner Circle'

May 7th, 2011 7:56am EDT
The Office
‘The Inner Circle’ was the first episode without Michael. I don’t know about you, but I felt that loss. More on that later.

The episode centers around Deangelo’s Man's Club (or so it could be called) in which he acts like a dopey, chauvinistic weirdo and all the other guys suck up. People like Kevin are thrilled to be in it, while Dwight insults Deangelo’s every move.

Jim gets himself in an awkward spot when he points out Deangelo appears sexist to some people in the office. As if to prove a point, Deangelo hires a young, female administrative assistant. (Is it just me, or does she l...

'The Office' Recap: 'Michael's Last Dundies' And 'Goodbye, Michael'

May 2nd, 2011 8:22am EDT
Steve Carell as Michael Scott
Sorry for my absence last week – vacation down south beckoned me. Here, then, is a double recap.

In ‘Michael’s Last Dundies,’ we get a warm-up to his goodbye. It starts with Michael and Deangelo making early morning house calls to present lucky Dundie nominees with their certificates. Reactions range from a drunken offer of Vienna sausages (Meredith) to outrage (Stanley: “Have you lost your mind? Get off my property before I call the police!”)

Michael finds it fitting to have Deangelo as his co-host, but Deangelo is pretty nervous about the whole thing. In fact, the guy is shaping up...

Michael Scott may have finally met his match – of a sort. Meet Deangelo Vickers (Will Ferrell), his apparent replacement. (Amongst their strange conversation… Michael: "I don’t want to end up like Sonny Bobo.” Deangelo: "That makes some sense right there. Everyone I know who skis is dead.” That pretty much sums up the gravity of their conversation.

Enter Deangelo into the Dunder Mifflin Scranton branch office, where h...

Paul Reiser Comedy Replaces 'Perfect Couples'

March 28th, 2011 7:30pm EDT
Paul Reiser
Paul Reiser's NBC comedy project has finally found a home, and a date. His show will premiere April 14, displacing the network's 'Perfect Couples' to bubble show purgatory. With two episodes left to air, its odds for renewal are not good.

Reiser's show, cleverly titled 'The Paul Reiser Show,' will feature him as a guy named Paul Reiser, who lives with his wife and kids and hangs out with other dads. It's a single camera comedy, and the first major TV project for Reiser since 'Mad About You' ended in 1999.

The announcement comes on the heels of NBC's announcement last week that it renew...

Even though the episode centers around a garage sale, this is probably the most plot significant – and emotionally satisfying – episode of ‘The Office’ in years. A lot happens amidst the selling of cheap things in the warehouse. That’s what she said.

Let’s start with the garage sale stuff: obviously, it’s not the series’ most exciting venture, but it has amusing points: Kevin, Andy and Darryl playing the Dallas board game; Angela selling cat figurines; Ryan appropriating pictures of Office staffers for his mother’s homemade canned goods; Michael’s refusal to sell much of anything; Oscar’...

'The Office' Recap: 'Todd Packer'

February 26th, 2011 2:18pm EST
Ellie Kemper
Todd Packer is possibly one of the most inappropriate characters on TV, and he’s played to perfection by David Koechner. No one in the office – except maybe a young Michael Scott – could get away with dry humping employees or making fat jokes.

When Packer decides to stop traveling and settle down, Michael convinces Holly that Packer would be a perfect addition to the team. She takes Michael at his word, not realizing just how crude the guy is. (She soon realizes it when he refers to his own daughter as a bitch.)

Everyone else in the office, meanwhile, is horrified at Packer’s return. ...

She was handcuffed, taken to a nearby police station and booked - and she was so tired after a long night of cramming for her exams she asked if she could sleep in a holding cell while she waited for one of her college professors to arrive and bail her out.

We know Michael loves to imagine himself as a movie star. But are we prepared to see a movie written by, directed by and starring him?

The episode, ‘Threat Level Midnight’ (great title, Michael) is all about the office folk watching Michael’s movie. Of course the movie is pathetically bad; I just wish it was a little more… hilariously bad. It does have its moments: Jan the Lounge Singer (Jasmine Windsong) taking an arrow to the throat was unexpected. And Karen’s stilted line reading (“Ever banged an entire bachelorette party, baby?) is a hoot.

PDA – do you love it or loathe it?

It seems relative to those in the situation. For anyone who’s been in a new romance, it’s great. For anyone who’s single, bitter, or even happily coupled, it can be disgusting. And Michael and Holly, cute though they are, have become that couple to some. They have become disgustingly cute.

Let’s start with the episode’s tag – Pam presents Darryl with a card in sympathy for the death of his almost-97-year-old grandmother. Unfortunately, that message is not properly communicated office-wide, and most write things like “Let’s get wasted!” in what they ...

If I had to choose, I’d say this is one of ‘The Office’s' weakest episodes of the season – at least until the end, when Michael & Holly save the world again.

The opening is nothing to speak of – Kelly & Ryan highlighting their “divorce” after getting married the previous week when they were “wasted.” Ummm, okay. I’m sorry, but isn’t their storyline played to death? And isn’t it a little ridiculous that B.J. Novak is considered a series regular when he gets less screen time then Ellie Kemper or Zach Woods?

What the hell David Brent is doing in Scranton we don’t find out, but he’s clearly the same old guy, making politically incorrect impressions and all. I’m intrigued by his query of job openings.
