Ricky Gervais Defends His 'Atheist Comedy' TV Show

July 22nd, 2011 1:45pm EDT
Ricky Gervais
Funnyman Ricky Gervais has defended his upcoming TV show Afterlife, insisting he is not attempting to "undermine the moral fabric of America."

The Office creator revealed earlier this week he is working on a new comedy with writer Clyde Phillips, about an atheist who dies and goes to heaven.

However, he is furious it has already been labeled an "atheist comedy" and is urging fans not to judge the show until they've seen it.

In a post on his official blog, Gervais writes, "How is a show called Afterlife, about an atheist who dies and goes to heaven, an 'Atheist Comedy'? He goes to heaven...

And The Emmy Nominees Will Probably Be...

July 13th, 2011 6:19pm EDT
Modern Family
It’s time to predict this year’s Emmy nominees – never an easy task. Emmy voters are unpredictable; they tend to hold onto old favorites, but sometimes nominate newbies and throw in wild card nominees as well.

This was a good year for TV – particularly old favorites like ‘Mad Men’ and ‘Modern Family’ but also new fare like ‘Raising Hope’ and ‘Boardwalk Empire.’

Here are predictions for this year’s nominees in the major series categories. I likely won’t be right on the money, but if I can get four out of every six in each category, I’ll be happy. It can be a tough guessing game.

Ricky Gervais Defends Dwarfism Sitcom

July 12th, 2011 8:26am EDT
Ricky Gervais
Ricky Gervais has defended his new sitcom centered around Warwick Davis, insisting he doesn't rely on the dwarf actor's short stature for the show's jokes.

Gervais and his writing partner Stephen Merchant recruited the Harry Potter star, who was born with dwarfism, for upcoming TV comedy Life's Too Short, about a dwarf actor running a struggling showbiz agency.

However, The Office funnyman is adamant he doesn't poke fun at Davis' disability in the series.

He tells Britain's Absolute Radio Breakfast Show, "This is nothing to do with his height. We're not getting jokes out of him being ...

June 29th, 2011 12:29pm EDT
Ricky Gervais
Ricky Gervais received an extra-special gift to mark his 50th birthday - a guitar used in classic comedy This Is Spinal Tap.

The British funnyman is close pals with Christopher Guest, who played musician Nigel Tufnel in the 1984 mockumentary about a rock band, and they headed out for a meal to celebrate Gervais reaching the milestone on Saturday.

And when Guest and his wife Jamie Lee Curtis handed over a pile of gifts for The Office creator, he was stunned to unwrap a Fender guitar used by Guest in the spoof movie.

Alec Baldwin & John Krasinski Fuel Yankees/Red Sox Rivalry

Alec Baldwin and John Krasinski. New Era Cap Company Inc.
30 Rock's Alec Baldwin and The Office star John Krasinski have teamed up for a new series of ads for New Era baseball caps, the official caps of Major League Baseball.

Baldwin, a huge Yankees fan, and Krasinski, a die-hard Red Sox fan, have brought some humor to the infamous New York/Boston rivalry in three ads, the latest featuring Krasinski spray painting the Red Sox' logo on Baldwin's dog.

The two go at it with each other in the ads, the first of which featured some serious trash-talking; and in the second things get pretty physical.

All three are hilarious, check 'em out below!

Who Aced The 2010-11 TV Season? (Hint: It's Not NBC)

June 4th, 2011 3:30pm EDT
The Voice
The 2010-2011 TV season is officially over. The ratings are in. If there is one surprise, it’s that last year’s top five shows were all up in viewers this year. With hefty viewer erosion in recent years, that’s nothing short of a miracle.

Most other veteran shows, however, saw a drop-off in viewers. There are some exceptions, however, such as ‘Modern Family,’ which saw very healthy ratings in its second year, particularly in the 18-49 demo.

The stats didn’t change much from last year. CBS won the season in total viewers with 11.6 million. It’s the eighth time in nine years the netwo...

'The Office' Recap: 'Search Committee'

May 21st, 2011 6:32pm EDT
Darryl
Well, there you have it. The new boss on ‘The Office’ is…. Just kidding. No idea.

I didn’t expect we’d find out, and I guess I was right. Still, it can be a little maddening to have such a hyped finale with no payoff. Although, the guest stars sure were interesting.

After Dwight’s disastrous stint as acting manager, and Creed’s delusional antics, it’s clear to Jo a search committee must be formed to find the right boss. More on that in a minute.

But first, Creed. Oh man, does he live up to his title of Creepy Old Man. He has an imaginary valet, calls meetings to an empty room with ...

Top Ten TV Goodbyes: Who Makes The List?

May 20th, 2011 5:00pm EDT
The Office Goodbye Michael
With Steve Carell leaving ‘The Office’ last month, it’s time to reflect on big goodbye episodes. I thought ‘The Office’ pulled off his departure well, although I’m not sure how I feel about the future of the show.

Here’s my top ten list of other shows that have successfully sent a character off in style. The rules: it is a true “goodbye” episode with a major character or star departing. If it happens off-screen, it doesn’t count. So that’s why I’m not including some obvious departures, such as Rhoda Morgenstern, Frank Burns, Coach Pantusso, etc.

Here they are. Do you agree?

'The Office' Recap: 'Dwight K. Schrute, Acting Manager'

May 15th, 2011 12:09pm EDT
The Office
We’re one step closer to finding out who the real manager is going to be on ‘The Office.’ But we’ve still got no clue who that’s going to be. After this episode, we know it’s not Dwight. And we can reasonably assume it’s not Creed.

With Deangelo in a coma, Jo is in a bind. She needs to find an acting manager for the office, even though, as Jim puts it, no one seems to really need a supervisor. He doesn’t want to mess with that, so he turns down her offer. Seconds later, Dwight’s phone rings, and he’s got the job. In a moment of horror, Pam asks her husband, “What have you done?”

What To Watch: Viewers Finally Learn Which ‘Glee’ Cast Member They Will Say Goodbye To Forever (May 15-21, 2011)

The number one thing you need to watch this week is “Glee” because after months of speculation, viewers will finally find out which cast member they will say goodbye to forever. That’s right; in case you haven’t heard, one of McKinley High’s own will face an unexpected loss. Cast and crew have been tight-lipped about who is dying, but viewer guesses include Sue’s sister, Puck and Quinn’s daughter, or Kurt’s dad. Of course, this doesn’t mean it couldn’t be one of the regular cast members; ugh, I cringed at the thought!

‘The Inner Circle’ was the first episode without Michael. I don’t know about you, but I felt that loss. More on that later.

Jim gets himself in an awkward spot when he points out Deangelo appears sexist to some people in the office. As if to prove a point, Deangelo hires a young, female administrative assistant. (Is it just me, or does she l...
