NBC Axes 'New Normal' and 'Smash'

May 12th, 2013 9:48am EDT
Smash
Ryan Murphy's The New Normal and musical drama Smash are the latest victims of TV cuts in the U.S.

Network bosses are currently choosing which series to continue and which to axe, and the Glee creator's gay family comedy is one of the unlucky ones.

The NBC show starred Justin Bartha and Andrew Rannells as a same-sex couple who have a baby via surrogate, but it won't be taken to season two.

Smash, which featured Katherine McPhee as a performer fighting to make her way on Broadway, has also been cancelled by bosses at NBC, leaving Debra Messing, Anjelica Huston and Megan Hilty out of a job...

Yoko Ono Grants John Lennon Song Rights To 'The New Normal' Season Finale

March 7th, 2013 6:43pm EST
Yoko Ono
Producer Ryan Murphy has scored a major coup for his hit TV show The New Normal after landing the rights to use John Lennon's highly personal track Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy) in the upcoming season finale.

The Glee creator reveals he reached out to Lennon's widow Yoko Ono, who owns the rights to The Beatles icon's back catalogue, in the hope of using the touching tune on TV - and he was stunned at how easy the whole process was, considering how selective Ono is about the projects she approves.

During a panel talk with the show's cast and crew at Los Angeles' Paley Fest, Murphy said, "W...

'The New Normal' Delivers Laughs, Shows Promise

September 12th, 2012 11:15am EDT
'The New Normal'
‘The New Normal’ is probably the most “normal” show Ryan Murphy has created so far. ‘Glee’ is about outcasts, to a certain extent. And while ‘Normal’ features characters who are sometimes subjected to bigotry, they are people who are by and large mainstream.

TV Station Under Fire For Refusing To Air Ryan Murphy's 'The New Normal'

August 26th, 2012 10:07am EDT
The New Normal
Bosses at a Utah TV station have come under fire after they refused to broadcast Ryan Murphy's upcoming gay-focused sitcom The New Normal.

Executives at Utah-based NBC affiliate KSL-TV have ruled out adding the show, which stars Justin Bartha and Andrew Rannells as a gay couple who have a child via surrogate, to their autumn schedule.

The station's CEO Jeff Simpson says, "After viewing the pilot episode of The New Normal, we have made the decision to keep it off our fall schedule.

"For our brand, this program simply feels inappropriate on several dimensions, especially during family v...
