Which Unpleasant TV Characters Do You Work With?

November 8th, 2014 2:00pm EST
Jan Brady
I worked with quite a number of “characters” when I was on staff as an advertising copywriter. I have to say that my two most memorable ones are “Jan Brady” and “Gregory House, M.D.”

As the youngest of three writers at one of my agencies, Jan was between our senior colleague and myself on the org chart. She was the middle sister in her birth family and recreated her center sibling frustrations and anxieties at work every day. Although I was not the focus of Jan’s resentment, (I was “Cindy” in this scenario), I, along with the rest of our co-workers, got treated to a daily (and draining) do...

Fall TV 2014: A Night By Night Comparison Of What May And May Not Work

May 15th, 2014 2:40pm EDT
Fall TV 2014: A Night By Night Comparison Of What May And May No
Now that all the big networks have revealed what they’ll be showing us this fall, let’s take a look at what may or may not work.

SUNDAY:

ABC is essentially playing it safe, and keeping Sunday Night intact. American Crime will swap for Resurrection at midseason. Resurrection was a buzzy drama that started seeing a ratings decline. Not waiting till midseason is probably a smart move. You don’t want to lose any more audience. It’s not a winning strategy, but ABC just doesn’t want to be in last place.

NBC has football, another super safe move. CBS is shaking things up, banishing Amazing Race...

'Nashville' Season 2: Fall Semester

January 6th, 2014 10:30pm EST
Nashville
I haven't reviewed much of Nashville this season - in fact, no reviews at all - but not because I haven't been watching and for the most part enjoying the series.  Herewith then a catch-up review of the Fall part of the second season.

First, the music is still outstanding, but not quite as good as in the first season. In particular, there's been no song as good as "The Wrong Song," which was just right, though Gunnar's songs are nearly as good as the ones he wrote and sang with Scarlett in the first season.  Rayna, because of the plot point about losing her voice, hasn't been singing as ne...

Fall 2013 TV Report (So Far)

October 5th, 2013 2:06pm EDT
Sleepy Hollow
Here’s how the Fall TV season has been shaping up.

Sunday:

ABC doesn’t have a lot to celebrate about. Once Upon A Time and Revenge are both down season-to-season, yet up from last season’s finales. So, really, you could say they are even for the night. Their new drama, Betrayal, however is a disappointment. Low ratings. Does ABC have anything ready to replace Betrayal though? They’re already definitely going to cancel the much lower rated Lucky 7 (an almost certainty), can they afford to axe two shows?

CBS has a nice strong lineup of returning shows, all performing well. FOX’s shows are ...

2013 Fall TV Preview: The Returning Shows On ABC

September 3rd, 2013 11:46am EDT
Modern Family
Welcome to Week 2 of the 2013 Fall TV Preview. ABC kicks things off for the third year in a row. I wrote about the critics disdain for ABC president Paul Lee last week, but they acknowledge ABC's success with its veteran shows. Revenge and Once Upon A Time enter season three this month. Grey's Anatomy is entering its tenth season. Castle's on season six. The Neighbors and Nashville got a second season. ABC struggles to develop and maintain new shows. I don't know why. How futile is network analysis with the growth of streaming services such as Hulu and Netflix? Network analysis is interesti...

Hayden Panettiere: New Bikini Shots Reveal That She's Having Her Misspelled Tattoo Removed

September 2nd, 2013 12:11pm EDT
Hayden Panettiere
Hayden Panettiere showed off her sexy curves on Miami Beach over Labor Day Weekend while enjoying some time off from filming her hit show Nashville, spending time with some friends and boyfriend Wladimir Klitschko, who owns a home in the area.

Hayden wore a yellow and blue zigzag print bikini, revealing that she's been getting laser treatments to get rid of the misspelled tattoo on her back.

The tattoo reads, "Vivere senza rimipianti", but the artist added an extra "i" to the word "rimpianti", which takes away from the meaning behind the inking.

Ironically, the phrase means "live with...

'Nashville' Ropes In Three Series Regulars For Season Two

July 8th, 2013 8:30pm EDT
Nashville
Lennon and Maisy Stella and Chris Carmack will return to Nashville as series regulars for the ABC drama’s sophomore season, The Hollywood Reporter reports.

The real-life sisters portray Rayna’s (Connie Britton) daughters on the series. The Canadian singers showcased their vocal pipes during the show’s first season, covering The Lumineers’ “Ho Hey” and Juliette Barnes’ (Hayden Panettiere) “Telescope.”

Last season viewers learned that Maddie (Lennon Stella) is the biological daughter of Rayna and Deacon (Charles Esten), not Rayna and Teddy (Eric Close), which in turn causes Deacon to fall o...

Hayden Panettiere: 'I Love Playing The Villain'

June 9th, 2013 4:02pm EDT
Hayden Panettiere
Hayden Panettiere feels so mean for her frequent onscreen fights with Connie Britton in Nashville; she is constantly apologizing for her catty remarks.

The 23 year-old actress plays rising country musician Juliette Barnes in the hit show, and her character has regular clashes with Britton, who takes on the role of fading star Rayna Jaymes.

Their rivalry has given Panettiere the chance to move out of her stereotype 'good girl' roles but she admits she struggles to be Mrs. Nasty and hates hurling insults at her co-star on set.

She tells U.K. talk show host Graham Norton, "I love playing...

'Nashville': The Prime Time Soap With A Country Twang

October 10th, 2012 3:11pm EDT
Nashville
"Unfortunately, the older business models are irrelevant."

In every field and industry, those are words you don’t want to hear. Will your audience or customer grow old along with you? Can it really be over just when you’re hitting your creative stride?

That’s the new reality country music star Rayna Jaymes (Connie Britton) faces in the pilot of “Nashville.” Rayna’s audience are turning away, preferring up and coming, glamorous Juliette Barnes’ (Hayden Panettiere) glitzy, auto-tuned repertoire. Despite having 20 solid years of hits and sold out audiences, her latest album is tanking, and...

Connie Britton And Hayden Panettiere Talk Reba, Taylor Swift And 'Nashville' Singing

October 10th, 2012 12:09pm EDT
Connie Britton
ABC’s new drama Nashville stars Connie Britton as a country music star and Hayden Panettiere as the next big thing. Already the country music community thinks they know who this is really about: Reba McEntire and Taylor Swift?

“I ran into Reba McEntire on a plane,” Britton said when she spoke to the Television Critics Association this summer. “And she said, ‘Did you hear that they're saying that you're playing me in your show?’ And I said, ‘No. I had no idea.’ For me, at least, it's sort of an amalgam of a lot of different people, but I'm also I think it's really fun to take from that so...

Fall TV Preview: 6 Can't Miss New Shows

September 10th, 2012 1:05pm EDT
Stephen Amell
It’s the most wonderful time of the year. For many, that expression harkens up memories of a classic Christmas carol blaring though tinny mall speakers as you fight the crowds for the last three gifts on your lists. However, for this television blogger, Hollywood's newest crop of shows are all the presents I need. Judging strictly by the glittery wrapping that is their promos, here are my choices for this season’s can’t-miss new shows...

In the past few years, The CW has made valiant attempts to broaden their roster beyond shows geared towards the Bieber set with smarter, sle...

Hayden Panettiere Shows Off Her Curves In A Red Dress With Devil's Tail

May 16th, 2012 8:34am EDT
Hayden Panettiere
Hayden Panettiere is back in the spotlight, and we're jazzed about it. The actress showed up to a VIP cocktail party to celebrate ABC's New York upfronts in New York City yesterday.

She showed off her curvy figure in a tight red dress with a black devil's tail hanging from the edge.

Hayden stars in the upcoming ABC series "Nashville." The show follows a country legend (Connie Britton) who goes on tour with a rising star (Panettiere). The young star schemes to upstage the older performer, whose career is waning.

Hayden recently starred in the cult NBC series "Heroes" and appeared in the...
