TV Ratings: CBS Looks Strong Near Season Finish Line

May 9th, 2013 9:01am EDT
'NCIS'
CBS dominated the late-season week, topped by ‘NCIS’ with more than 18 million viewers. The veteran drama is poised to surpass ‘Sunday Night Football’ as the season’s most-watched program in total viewers. Meanwhile, ‘The Big Bang Theory,’ which placed second for the week, is ready to take the 18-49 crown.

Among shows that beat FOX’s ‘American Idol’ in the all-important demo this week: ‘Big Bang’ and ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’ ‘Idol’ placed 9th and 10th, respectively. One interesting thing about this week’s top 10: All broadcast networks had at least one show place. For NBC it was ‘The Voice’ and A...

TV Ratings: CBS Carries The Week

March 28th, 2013 8:24pm EDT
'NCIS'
CBS was tops in the ratings last week, thanks mostly to its most-watched program, ‘NCIS,’ which nabbed more than 19 million viewers and the number one slot. The Eye Network also had three of the top six programs, including ‘NCIS: Los Angeles.’ ‘The Big Bang Theory’ and other hits were in repeats.

Despite a lower-than-usual Spring start, ABC’s ‘Dancing With the Stars’ did well with more than 17 million viewers, besting both editions of FOX’s ‘American Idol’ by several million viewers. That show averaged 12.94 and 11.93 million viewers on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. Remember the da...

Another 'NCIS' Spin-Off In The Works

NCIS
Network bosses are in talks to develop a second spin-off series of hit crime show NCIS.

The police drama about the country's Naval Criminal Investigative Service, which stars Mark Harmon and Michael Weatherly, premiered in 2003 and has since become one of the most successful international dramas.

TV chiefs at CBS launched an off-shoot of the program called NCIS: LA, featuring Chris O'Donnell and LL Cool J, in 2009 and now executive producer Shane Brennan has been tapped to write a two-part episode for the show, which could serve as another spin-off if it is well-received by fans.

FOX Knocks NBC Off 18-49 Perch

November 1st, 2012 9:46am EDT
'NCIS'
Thanks to the World Series, FOX broke NBC’s winning streak in the 18-49 demo last week. It was the least-watched World Series in history, though. The network couldn’t even boast the week’s highest-rated sports program, which belonged to NBC’s Sunday Night Football with 17.73 million viewers. The highest rated game of the series, Game 4, averaged 15.49 million.

FOX also snatched the total viewership crown from CBS, which had won it four weeks running. Still, though network produced the week’s most watched show, ‘NCIS,’ which barely beat football with 17.78 million viewers. The network also ...

TV Ratings: CBS Tops, But NBC Can Sing

October 11th, 2012 10:45am EDT
'NCIS'
NBC dominated the 18-49 demographic again in the second week of the fall TV season. Although it placed third among total viewers, NBC is clearly thriving and is the only network to gain viewership over the year-to-year period.

The Peacock network can herald ‘Sunday Night Football’ as its top-rated show, although ‘NCIS’ on CBS was tops overall with nearly 19 million viewers. NBC also was strong with ‘The Voice,’ good for 8th place.

CBS, meanwhile, won the week among total viewers. ‘The Big Bang Theory’ continued to perform strongly with more than 15 million viewers, while ‘NCIS: Los Angele...

If the latest TV ratings week was a final exam, CBS would get an A+ and NCIS would graduate at the top of the class. The stalwart once again topped the Nielsen ratings, besting all other scripted and reality programming, even as American Idol geared up for its finale.

‘NCIS’ attracted over 19 million viewers and spinoff NCIS: Los Angeles got over 15 million. By comparison, the Wednesday and Thursday editions of "Idol' attracted 17.7 million and 16.4 million, respectively.

'Desperate Housewives' Goes Out On A (Relatively) High Note

May 17th, 2012 9:43am EDT
Desperate Housewives
One of the final weeks of the TV season was a mixed bag for the networks. CBS, FOX and ABC had a few things to croon about, while NBC had to settle for, well, just a couple.

‘NCIS’ continues to outperform its rivals, taking in over 18 million viewers to rank first for the week, which had to make CBS happy. FOX was in the game with both installments of ‘American Idol,’ which placed second and fourth, respectively. And ABC got good numbers from ‘Castle’ and, of course, ‘Dancing With the Stars.’ To boot, ‘Desperate Housewives’ went out on a high note on Sunday, attracting over 11 million view...

TV Ratings: CBS, FOX Dominate, PBS Impresses With 'Sherlock'

May 8th, 2012 8:36pm EDT
Sherlock
CBS dominated the ratings last week with 14 of the Top 25 programs. But FOX managed to tie it in the 18-49 demo with a 2.2 rating. ‘NCIS’ was tops again, while ‘American Idol’ performed quite strongly, particularly on Wednesday.

‘The Big Bang Theory’ performed well for CBS, making it the most-watched comedy and the third-most watched scripted program after both ‘NCIS’ shows. ‘Person of Interest’ and ‘The Mentalist’ also placed in the Top 10 for the network.

NBC had to settle for 20th place for ‘The Voice,’ its only program to crack the overall Top 20. ABC, meanwhile, found success with ‘M...

TV Ratings: 'Dancing On Top,' 'Game Of Thrones' Hits Season High

'The Big Bang Theory'
CBS, per usual, has reason to celebrate this week. While some of its programs, such as NCIS, were in reruns and attracted fewer viewers than usual, others soared. ‘Person of Interest’ has maintained the momentum it’s been gaining this season and was the network’s top show in 5th place with nearly 13 million viewers. ‘The Big Bang Theory,’ also airing on Thursday, also did well.

‘Dancing With the Stars’ was the top show of the week, while the results show placed 4th. ‘American Idol’ placed 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Since going live, ‘The Voice’ continues to slip, coming in at #11 with just...

More People Tuned Into 'NCIS' Last Week Than 'American Idol'

April 18th, 2012 10:28pm EDT
Modern Family
CBS was tops in the ratings this week, fueled by the #1 status of stalwart ‘NCIS,’ which reclaimed the top spot. FOX had to settle for second and fourth place for ‘American Idol,’ respectively. ABC’s ‘Dancing With the Stars’ was typically strong, and ‘Modern Family’ was the network’s most-watched scripted show.

Perhaps Mike Wallace’s death provided a small resurgence for ’60 Minutes,’ which placed 8th for the week, far ahead of any other news magazine show.

This is also the time of year for season and series lows, and quite a few show fell victim to it, particularly ‘The Office,’ which co...

The network’s ‘NCIS’ was tops with a new episode, but it was followed closely by the new season of ABC’s ‘Dancing with the Stars.’ That show also helped ‘Castle’ and ‘Body of Proof’ perform stronger than usual.

‘American Idol’ and ‘The Voice,’ in particular, haven’t exactly been reigning lately. The two edit...

The return of fresh episodes of ‘NCIS’ vaulted CBS to the top of the ratings heap this week, but every network had something to cheer about. For the first time in who knows how long, each network had at least one show in the Top 7. You might guess that NBC’s top entry was ‘The Voice.’

FOX, of course, had two editions of ‘American Idol’ in the Top 5, and the return of ABC’s ‘Dancing With the Stars,’ while down from the last installment, was the Number 2 program for the week. Its performance propelled ‘Castle’ into the Top 10. Likewise, FOX’s Kiefer Sutherland drama ‘Touch’ eked out a spot i...

In any given TV week, a TV network could make it sound like they trumped everyone else, that they had something to be proud of. This week, all four major networks could actually mean it.

While the top shows were an also-ran (yep, ‘American Idol’ is perched on top, with ‘The Voice’ close behind and boasting its 18-49 demo), every network had a Top 20 show. NBC didn’t have one besides ‘The Voice,’ but every other network had multiple shows. And that doesn’t happen much these days.

FOX had both weekly editions of ‘American Idol’ as well as Keifer Sutherland’s ‘Touch' (Number 19); CBS had its...

TV Ratings: 'American Idol' On Top, But CBS Dominates

‘American Idol’ returned to the top two perches on the weekly ratings chart this week. It seems that the live competition may be helping the sagging series, although a lot of programs were in repeats for the week.

Both editions of ‘Idol’ held off ‘The Voice.’ Wednesday’s ‘Idol’ placed first with 18.7 million viewers, followed by Thursday’s episode with 17.3 million. ‘The Voice’ followed with 16.8. Not too far behind, folks!

TV Ratings: Oscars Reign, But Can't Top Grammys

Meryl Streep
And the winner is…. The Oscars!

The 84th Annual Academy Awards was the top show of the week with 39.3 million viewers. The ceremony, which sported Billy Crystal as host and a surprise win for Meryl Streep, was up a tick from last year’s numbers. However, the show couldn’t top the unexpectedly stellar performance of the Grammys a couple of weeks ago. That show likely benefitted from Whitney Houston’s sudden passing and Adele’s surging popularity.

The Academy Awards propelled ABC to a rare weekly ratings win, with an average of 10.68 million. That was enough to top CBS (10.06 million), FOX ...

TV Ratings: 'NCIS' Tops 'American Idol'

February 23rd, 2012 9:12am EST
NCIS
CBS had a big week. Not only did it claim the top show (‘NCIS’ on Tuesday) but it also had a whopping 16 of the Top 20 shows. Probably the only way other networks survive (*cough NBC cough*) is that CBS viewers tend to skew a bit older.

The good news for FOX was that ‘American Idol’ held steady this week, fending off director competitor ‘The Big Bang Theory’ (good for 6th place) as well as genre competitor ‘The Voice,’ which attracted over 16 million viewers in 4th.

Speaking of ‘Big Bang,’ has anyone noticed that it is starting to outpace its former lead-in ‘Two and a Half Men’? The show ...

54th Annual GRAMMY Awards
The Grammy Awards attracted a stunning 39.9 million viewers on Sunday, the second-biggest tally in the award show’s history. A number of factors likely contributed to this, not the least of which is Whitney Houston’s death over the weekend. Jennifer Hudson’s soul-stirring rendition of “I Will Always Love You” was a highlight. But that’s no discredit to the red-hot Adele, who took home six awards and gave a show-stopping performance of her own.

Nothing came close to the Grammys’ ratings territory, but ‘American Idol’ held fairly steady from last week, capturing the third and fourth slots of...
