Call 911: Cop Shows Have Officially Taken A Turn For The Absurd

Call 911: Cop Shows Have Officially Taken A Turn For The Absurd
Who’s solving crime on television these days?

On one hand we’ve got “Detectives Olivia Benson” (Mariska Hargitay) and “Fin Tutuola” (Ice-T) careening up, siren blaring with the red light spinning on top of the car; the ubiquitous ‘Blue Bloods’ clan; the squads from ‘Rookie Blue’, ‘Major Crimes’, ‘Hawaii Five-0’, ‘Longmire’ and ‘Chicago PD’; plus those two from ‘Motive’, not to be confused with the other two from ‘The Bridge’ or ‘The Killing’ or ‘Murder In The First’.

What they all have in common is that, at least in these procedural dramas, all the characters are “on the job.” The down si...

'The Mentalist': Silver Wings of Time (6x17)
Hmm. Very interesting. Very interesting indeed. I liked this one. It had a very small feel to it, as most of the scenes were at the FBI office. Let us take a look.

A man is killed by a bomb at a bus stop. Turns out, this man was trying to find evidence that his friend wasn't guilty of a crime for which he is being sentenced to death. This friend has only three days left before he is executed. Abbott believes the convicted man when he says he's innocent, and so the team begins to hunt for the real murderer. They figure, whoever murdered the woman all those years ago also killed the guy with...

CBS Renews A Ton Of Shows

March 13th, 2014 3:16pm EDT
The Good Wife
CBS issued renewals to NCIS, NCIS: LA, CSI, Criminal Minds, Person Of Interest, Elementary, Hawaii Five-O, Blue Bloods, The Good Wife, 2 Broke Girls, The Millers, Mom, Mike and Molly, Two and a Half Men, The Amazing Race, Survivor, Undercover Boss, 60 Minutes, and 48 Hours. Add to that the renewal of The Big Bang Theory, and CBS just renewed a whopping 20 shows.

Not being picked up, but still not cancelled, are The Mentalist, Intelligence, Hostages, and The Crazy Ones. I would definitely rule out Intelligence and Hostages. Both failed to grab huge audiences. I think The Mentalist will prob...

'The Mentalist': White Lines (6x11)

January 9th, 2014 11:09am EST
The Mentalist
Unfortunately, I wasn't a big fan of this episode. I was waiting and waiting for some good Jane/Lisbon interactions after the winter hiatus, and I didn't get them. It's not like that's the only thing that makes a good episode of The Mentalist, of course, but the case was transparent and boring, and nothing much happened that I was too fond of. There were a few things here or there that I enjoyed, but not much. Let's start with the plot.

Jane and Lisbon are working one of their first cases with the FBI, and it involves several DEA agents being killed. The hunt is on for some bad man who run...

The Mentalist: The Great Red Dragon (6x07)

November 20th, 2013 12:14am EST
The Mentalist
This episode did a great job pushing us forward towards next week's epic Red John episode. And... it's Bertram, right? He's Red John? One of my favorite things about this episode is that we're pretty sure it's Bertram, but there is a tiny bit of wiggle room. All of the other suspects except for Smith are dead, and Smith has confessed everything he knows. But let's slow down for a moment and take a look at the plot.

We jump in right where we left off, with the house exploding and Lisbon running in, frantically looking for Jane. We see that Smith and Bertram are still alive, and so is Jane, ...

'The Mentalist': Fire and Brimstone (6x06)

November 12th, 2013 12:51am EST
The Mentalist
This was a very solid episode and a very exciting lead up to the Red John confrontation, which is only two episodes away. In some ways, what's so great about this episode is that not very much happens. Let be go through the plot very quickly, and then talk through some elements that I thought worked particularly well.

Jane and the team are set to gather up the five remaining Red John suspects. Jane wants them all at one place at one time, so that he can ask them to reveal their arms. Whichever one has the tattoo, he will know that is Red John. Jane, Lisbon and the others are able to succes...

'The Mentalist': Red Listed (6x04)

October 24th, 2013 2:55pm EDT
The Mentalist
I'm going to be really brief, which is ultimately a shame, since this episode was really plot heavy and deserves a lot of attention.

Okay. So, Jane planted a decoy list of fake Red John suspects in case anyone tried to steal the list from him. One of these fake suspects ends up dead, and suddenly a hunt begins. Lisbon and Jane suppose that the reason Benjamin Marx is dead is because someone else is trying to eliminate Red John, and Lisbon knows she needs to offer protection to the other fake suspects. One problem: they're all pretty much terrible people, and a lot of them don't want to off...

The Mentalist: Wedding in Red (6x03)

October 15th, 2013 3:27pm EDT
The Mentalist
Let's jump straight into the plot.

Jane wants to keep an eye on Sheriff McAllister (one of the Red John suspects), so he convinces Lisbon to take a case in Napa. The case involves a wedding between a rich, snobby socialite girl and a lower class Hispanic man. Cliche of all cliches, but it actually worked. Despite the families battling about their kids getting married, the couple very clearly loved each other. The victim is the bride-to-be's uncle, who everyone agrees is nobody worth murdering, or even really talking about.

Everyone reacted really strangely to hearing about his death. It w...

'The Mentalist' Recap: Black-Winged Red Bird (6x02)

October 8th, 2013 6:10pm EDT
The Mentalist
After a strong opening, this episode of The Mentalist fell back in a big way. I was pretty disappointed. There were a few good things going on here, but to be honest I just felt let down after that awesome season premiere.

So, the case of the week involved someone being taken out by a drone strike. In their car. You know where I've already seen this strange plot before? On Castle last season. You snooze you lose, guys. And even on top of that, the mystery ended up revolving around a ritual samurai suicide, since the guy who died was apparently all about honor. But there was still a bad guy...

2013 Fall TV Season: What Will Be The Second Cancellation?

October 8th, 2013 6:00pm EDT
Ironside
NBC- The Voice is still doing good numbers on Monday/Tuesday. The Blacklist is winning its timeslot, and was the first show (technically) to be rewarded with a back-nine pickup. Chicago Fire is also doing solid numbers on Tuesday. Revolution needs to regain some audience members if it wants a second season. With the success of The Blacklist, and Chicago Fire doing OK, Revolution is looking to be one of NBC’s weaker points right now. I can’t see it not running the full second season, but it might not get a third. Also, Ironside is definitely going to get cancelled. The premiere was so low, a...

'The Mentalist' Recap: The Desert Rose (6x01)

The Mentalist
Good, strong opening episode! I'm actually getting excited about this season of The Mentalist, which is not something I was expecting to happen. Plot-wise, we pick up where we left off.

Jane and Lisbon are shocked at the discovery that Red John knows the list of seven suspects. Jane appears to be at a total loss as to what to do. Then, they get a case.

It's a run-of-the-mill sort of thing. A body has turned up, but it's old - a skeleton. It takes some time, therefore, to ID it. They think it belongs to a man who went missing quite some time back. Along the way we meet the wife, the son (f...

2013 Fall TV Preview: The Returning Shows On The CW & CBS

September 4th, 2013 6:00pm EDT
Arrow
The CW and CBS are complete opposites. The CW shouldn't be in business, and CBS is THE business. The CW aims for teenagers to lose their sh!t on social media. CBS aims for the median age of the people in my office. I've never understood the Blue Bloods audience more than in the last year. My interest in The CW is odd and possibly unhealthy. I'm endlessly fascinated with its shows and attractive actors. I'll watch Reign just for Adelaide Kane. I'm not endlessly fascinated by CBS. CBS lulls me to sleep. I never wrote about Elementary's "Pilot" because I went to sleep mid-episode. I never watc...

$16 Million Contract Puts Britney Spears On TV's Top Paid List - Behind Judge Judy

May 10th, 2012 11:03am EDT
Britney Spears
Britney Spears is reportedly set to rake in $16 million as a judge on The X Factor, but the incredible amount isn't nearly enough to put her on top of TV's best paid list.

Assuming The X Factor has the same amount of episodes this season (26), Spears would pocket a bit over $615,000 an episode. That makes her the second highest paid per episode in primetime currently - Ashton Kutcher makes $700,000 an episode for Two and a Half Men. She is also far behind predecessor Charlie Sheen's whopping $1.2 million an episode. It would put her ahead of William Petersen's previous salary on CSI ($600,...

One of the joys of fandom is being able to share your passions. And thanks to Ashley and David Eckstein, that just got a lot easier (and cooler) for women.

Representing one's fandoms can be a difficult task for the female gender. I say that from experience; I'm all about showing off my allegiances. One of those happens to be to the San Diego Padres, and I went on a rant when there wasn't a T-shirt for my favorite second baseman, a certain David Eckstein. You can imagine my delight to hear that someone that I am a huge fan of was making it easier for me to represent the things I love.

Aussie actor Simon Baker has landed at the top of a new TV salary list - after reportedly signing a $30 million deal to extend his time on The Mentalist.

The star's Christmas bonus has made him the highest-paid dramatic actor on TV, jumping over House star Hugh Laurie and CSI's Laurence Fishburne.

Baker, who plays psychic crime consultant Patrick Jane in the hit series, was reportedly pocketing $250,000 per episode before the contract extension.

Reports suggest the new deal with Warner Brothers includes a producing credit throughout the fifth season the show.

Fall TV Ratings: What's Hot, What's Not

October 8th, 2010 9:30am EDT
Cloris Leachman
We're only two weeks into the fall season, and we have two series cancellations. Let's see if we can keep up this "one canceled show a week" deal. For the record, the goners are FOX's 'Lone Star' and ABC's 'My Generation,' both of which got dismal ratings. Production was also halted on the Jimmy Smits drama 'Outlaw' and it's not looking good for ABC's 'The Whole Truth' either. By next week there will likely be more network victims.

As of this week, no huge new hits have emerged. FOX's 'Raising Hope' is doing fairly well following the hot 'Glee' and was awarded this week with a ...

It's common knowledge that it was Patrick Jane's fault that his wife and daughter were brutally murdered by the serial killer Red John, but sometimes due to his pain it's difficult to remember other people suffered too. He's come a long way even in the last season from being very touchy and slightly insane about what happened to his life, and now being able to come to terms with his wife's death in a slightly better way. Last week's episode was about his wife's brother Danny stirring up trouble for Jane and reminding him about how badly he failed his wife.

Danny calls Jane and asks for hel...
