TV on DVD: 'Medium: The Final Season'

June 30th, 2011 3:05pm EDT
Medium
Recently, CBS Home Entertainment released season seven of Medium on DVD - the show's last. It comes home with four discs and thirteen episodes. Here's my review of the final set for the cult favorite.

The Show

I've never been interested in the paranormal-type shows; I watched a few episodes of Ghost Whisperer and never really got into it, so when I got my hands on Medium (another CBS show with the same general concept of a woman who has a connection to the dead) I didn't have high hopes. I have to say, though, that once I cracked this set open I could see why the show lasted over tw...

'Medium' Gets The Axe

November 16th, 2010 11:26am EST
Patricia Arquette
Patricia Arquette has confirmed her hit TV show Medium has been "cancelled".

The actress has starred as a psychic consultant in the drama since 2005 in a role which won her an Emmy Award. But Arquette has now revealed TV bosses have axed the show, which will come to an end at the close of the upcoming seventh season.

She tells EW.com, "We got cancelled... I was trying to get information from the writers about the last episode. I don't know what it's going to be, but they're really excited about it. They're like, 'We're just going to burn the whole thing down!' I'm really excited."

Presenting Starpulse's quick-and-dirty guide to this fall's new CBS programming.

First, the new:

Mike & Molly, Mon. Sept. 20, 9:30/8:30 CST -- America's obesity epidemic has left a lot us a bit fluffier, and "Mike & Molly" might be CBS's attempt to deliver a show we can relate to. Unfortunately, that seems to be the extent of the humor -- being fluffy. The main characters, played by Billy Gardell ("Yes, Dear") and Melissa McCarthy ("Gilmore Girls"), meet at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting, fall for each other, and deal with the modern-day problems overweight couples face. Time will tel...

Patricia Arquette's 'Friendly' Divorce

August 30th, 2010 2:00pm EDT
Patricia Arquette
Patricia Arquette has dismissed rumors she clashed with her estranged husband Thomas Jane over custody of their young daughter - calling their ongoing divorce "friendly" and "not weird".

The Medium star confirmed her split from The Punisher actor earlier this month and after filing for divorce, Arquette requested full legal and physical custody of their seven-year-old daughter, Harlow.

Subsequent rumors suggested the former couple disagreed over how they should split custody of the youngster, but the actress is adamant the legal proceedings haven't turned bitter.

She tells E! Online, ...

Patricia Arquette
Actress Patricia Arquette is seeking primary custody of her young daughter after filing for divorce from husband Thomas Jane on Friday.

The Medium star confirmed she has split from The Punisher actor last week, with her spokesperson saying, "The split is completely amicable and their prime focus is their daughter."

Arquette filed for an official split in a Los Angeles court on Friday, and is seeking legal and physical custody of their seven-year-old daughter, Harlow.

It is the second break-up for the couple, who married in 2006. Arquette filed for divorce in January 2009, only to ask ...

Patricia Arquette And Thomas Jane Split Again

August 14th, 2010 5:00pm EDT
Patricia Arquette and Thomas Jane
Patricia Arquette and husband Thomas Jane have separated for the second time in as many years. The Medium actress filed for divorced from Jane in January 2009, citing "irreconcilable differences", but the pair reunited just weeks later and hosted a party at their Los Angeles home together.

Arquette asked for her petition to be dismissed in July last year after the couple decided to work at their marriage.

But the pair has failed to make their union work out and have split again.

A representative for the pair says, "The split is completely amicable and their prime focus is their daugh...

Kelsey Grammer's estranged wife stands to receive half of the TV star's fortune - a staggering $40 million, according to reports.

The actor wed Camille Donatacci in 1997 but the former Playboy model filed for divorce last month, citing "irreconcilable differences". Grammer subsequently filed court papers requesting that Donatacci should not be allowed to lay claim to profits from his hit show Frasier as he has sole financial interest in the series.

However, according to New York Post gossip column PageSix, Donatacci is eligible for half of his $80 million estate as she part-owns his pro...

'Medium' Actor Was Drug Mule For Rolling Stones

June 3rd, 2010 9:38pm EDT
Jake Weber
The depths of the Rolling Stones' drug-fueled 1971 recording sessions in the South of France have been exposed by the eight year old who was used as a drug mule just so Keith Richards could give bandmate Mick Jagger cocaine as a wedding gift.

Actor Jake Weber, who plays Patricia Arquette's husband in hit TV drama "Medium," has spoken out about his weird summer with the Stones when he was just a kid.

The "Meet Joe Black" star's late father, socialite Tommy Weber, was among the men charged with getting drugs for the Stones while the rockers worked on their "Exile on Main St." album at Richa...

Which TV Show Should Be Saved From Cancellation?

May 5th, 2010 10:51am EDT
Melrose Place
It's that time of year again. The various networks are deciding what to keep and what to throw out as they put together their 2010-11 primetime schedules.

As usual, some shows are canceled early ("Eastwick," anyone?) while others eek it out through the season, desperate for renewal ("FlashForward," "Heroes," and so on).

Network execs are looking at a new crop of freshman dramas, comedies, and reality shows, and they need to make room on their schedules. As a result, poor performing series are given the boot.

So as we say goodbye to some of our favorites that are gone for good ("24," "Lo...

A Ratings Bump For 'Glee': Will The Trend Continue?

April 15th, 2010 10:57am EDT
Glee
"Glee" was one of the most critically acclaimed hits of the fall, but like many critical favorites it did not translate to big ratings. The show averaged just under 8 million viewers an episode during its first 13 episodes, putting it on par with shows like "The Biggest Loser" and "Medium."

"Glee" returned Tuesday night at 9:28pm ET immediately following "American Idol." The lead-in from "Idol" and the unusual start time resulted in 13.6 million viewers. Perhaps what is most impressive is that "Glee" held on to all (or gained as many as they lost) of "Idol's" 18-34 year old viewers, the de...

'Medium' Recap: Will The Real Fred Rovick Please Stand Up?

February 10th, 2010 7:44am EST
Will the Real Fred Rovick Please Stand Up
It's not often that a guest star on "Medium" gets to play multiple characters at once, nor that they're involved in a serious case but played for laughs during the episode. Diedrich Bader is the guest star as Fred Rovick, a mysterious man that Allison is seeing everywhere for some reason. He is tied to the latest murder investigation but she is uncertain why.

The real case of last week's episode was about a pretty young woman who married a rich old man. When he revealed his cancer was in remission and he would be living longer, she loses her head and tosses him down a flight of stairs. T...

'Medium' Pushes The Boundaries With Blood & Gore In Latest Episode

February 1st, 2010 7:43am EST
Medium
Last week's episode of "Medium" had a twist that wasn't really that surprising, but it still worked out brilliantly thanks to great acting on all parts. The main guest star, Danielle Panabaker, did very well against Patricia Arquette and it's always great to see a strong vibe between Allison and her case of the week. The episode starts with Allison having a dream about a little girl being diagnosed with schizophrenia as her parents worriedly watch on. They catch her murdering a cat, which was incredibly disturbing even if you only see the feet and tail. Yuck.

Allison is called in to wor...

'Medium' Gets Emotional

January 20th, 2010 8:32am EST
Medium
There have been some very emotional "Medium" episodes in the past, but this first episode back from the holiday hiatus was the equivalent to a stab wound straight to the heart. It featured District Attorney Devalos, the wonderful supporting character who employs Allison Dubois, and his tragic past regarding his daughter Arianna. It must be said that Miguel Sandoval got his own daughter Olivia to play the role of Arianna, which made a lot of the emotional pain in the rest of the episode so much more real. They gave beautiful pictures of the two of them as she grew up, and it could not have b...

'Medium' Recap: 'Once in a Lifetime'

November 17th, 2009 8:55am EST
Medium
It's pretty shocking that last week's "Medium" is one of the few times Ariel ever brings home a boy. For a pretty high school student she really does not date at all, what's up with that? Not that the show could use a teenage romance at the center of it, but she's almost in college. Ah well. So the episode starts with Ariel bringing home a handsome young boy, and her parents are excited because she got a letter from her first choice school Cornell. Instead, Ariel tells them she's pregnant and has no plans to go to college. Allison wakes up panicked, and that's certainly the kind of nightmar...

'Medium' Recap: 'New Terrain'

It really is becoming a family affair on "Medium," and it's working for the show. Instead of just having Allison's case of the week, now we seem to be getting multiple cases with one of little Dubois girls trying to figure out their own mystery. In last week's episode Allison deals with a bank robber who has a bomb strapped on him, and Ariel meets a new friend after a car accident and may be able to save her life.

It starts out with Ariel driving her sisters to school and getting into a horrible accident. A truck forces them into the road. Allison wakes up and it seems to just be a scare...

'Medium' Recap: 'Baby Fever'

The newest episode of "Medium" consists of Allison acting like a creepy psychopath and everyone trying to cater to her crazy. It's shocking that she's managed to keep out of jail at this point, considering how many weird scrapes she gets into thanks to her 'gift.' It's probably good for her to work at the DA's office, if only so they're sympathetic when she commits crimes in the name of dead people.

This one is all about babies, and if you like babies, you see lots of them this episode. If the sound of a baby crying annoys you, however, it'll be ringing in your ear for the rest of the ni...

'Medium' Recap: 'The Medium is the Message'

Medium
Last week's episode of "Medium" was the type where the audience knows who the villain is before Allison does, and so the mystery is more about finding out why and how they'll stop him. The show doesn't blatantly tell us who is to blame, but enough clues can be picked up early on that you're staring at the screen going 'come on Allison, he's eeeeevil!' Meanwhile Joe gets the bestest job ever and hates it, and the Zodiac killer is found ... er ... the "Libra" killer.

The show starts out with a writer sits by the bedside of a dying cancer patient, and tries to get him to admit he is the inf...

'Medium' Recap: 'Pain Killer'

October 12th, 2009 2:37pm EDT
Medium
Ahhh, "Medium," for a family-friendly show you really can be eerily dark. While it hosts adorable kids and a happily married couple, the show is also about murderers and the dead and the heroine doesn't always win. This is kind of depressing, but ultimately satisfying to people who don't like to be hand-fed Hollywood BS. Way to be cruel, "Medium."

Allison dreams about a time she was in her coma and she almost died. A doctor came in and saved her when everyone else gave up. Joe never told her about this, and she's feeling a bit on the vulnerable side since a friend of hers from the hospit...

Patricia Arquette On Her New 'Medium' Hair

Fans of Medium were worried about Alison Dubois's coma, and her move from NBC to CBS. Now that she's awoken, they are treated to her new hair. Patricia Arquette had to cut her hair to play the aftermath of brain surgery, and now she's rockin' the styling 'do.

"It was written in the script that I had this brain tumor so when I came back, they said, 'Well, we can get you like 10 wigs and you can get a wig on every day or we can cut your hair,'" Arquette explained. 'Medium' Recap: ' Who's That Girl'

Medium
I wonder sometimes if NBC regrets canceling "Medium" now that it is thriving on CBS. Two episodes in and it gets decent ratings - remarkable for a Friday night - and plenty of attention from the new station. NBC wasn't one for marketing this interesting family drama, and perhaps it wasn't one of their big name shows so it never mattered that much, but CBS is proving it knows how the handle the fanbase and the show. It's great to see "Medium" get its due and stay as good as it has been for years. How often does a switch of networks only seem to solidify its popularity? This might've been the...

'Medium' Is Back On CBS

"Medium" is back on a brand new channel (CBS) and at the Friday death slot, 9 PM. The excitement about its renewal is lessened somewhat by the fact Friday is a horrible time for the show, and it's certainly a jump down from Monday, but it's alive and that is what matters. Now NBC ended the show last season with a big old middle finger at CBS, causing Allison to go into a coma after having brain surgery. She almost died and knew she'd lose her gift for good. So now she has brain injury and no powers. Enjoy CBS. They managed to develop the premiere enough that it doesn't seem too easy to get ...

Ah, the Emmys. The one Awards show on TV that has a nonchalant attitude toward its honorees and the medium it seeks to honor. A ceremony that seeks to put on a funny show, not blow smoke up the behinds of the many winners mostly seem like they'd rather not be there.

Sure, the last couple years were awful, but this year we have the inimitable Neil Patrick Harris at the helm, and with the possibility that this may be Emmy's final year on broadcast television, they're certain to pull out all the stops and ratchet up the funny.

And with that stellar introduction, here is the 2009 Primet...

Well, "Medium" is so done with NBC now, and they certainly gave it a bittersweet ending. It will be interesting to see how CBS brings the show back next season, but it's a good thing that this isn't the end of the show; way too depressing! There was one major hole I could see in this week's plot: Allison has a brain tumor. It was just a few weeks ago that she slipped into an unknown coma. Now one would assume if she was not responding, they would have done plenty of tests on her brain at that point to figure out the problem. Did a tumor seriously grow that fast? How much time was it between...
