9 TV Shows We Were Instantly Hooked On
There are a lot of great television shows, but there aren't many that are immediately addictive. Most shows take a few episodes before they find their characters or their most interesting story. Every once in a while, though, there's that show which grabs you right away - and that's what we're celebrating this week.

Here's our short list of nine shows that turned us into fans before the end credits rolled on their first installment. See if you recognize any of them, and leave your own picks at the end of the article.

TV on DVD: 'Case Histories' & 'Fortysomething'

Case Histories
Here's the latest in TV on DVD: Acorn Media brings us the fantastic Case Histories, and revisits the Hugh Laurie comedy Fortysomething via Acorn TV.

I haven't read the Kate Atkinson novels that Case Histories is based on, but thanks to the series, now I'm going to. As recently seen on PBS' vaunted Masterpiece Mystery! series, this is a cracking six-episode set. That's largely because it stars the very talented Jason Isaacs (of Brotherhood and The State Within fame), who has never given a bad performance in my book. He has an intensity about him coupled with physical presence that just m...

BBC's 'Spooks' Signs Off After Nearly A Decade

10/23/2011 3:26am EDT
Today sees the final hour of Spooks, the BBC's long-running and critically acclaimed espionage drama. After ten series and almost a decade on the air, the show signs off after its 85th episode on BBC One at 9 PM tonight.

The show first aired on May 13, 2002, telling the stories of a crack team of agents for Britain's elite spy agency MI5. It rose to become an institution of British TV, its ten series (seasons) virtually unheard of for a serial drama and more than that of other feted shows like Waking The Dead and Wire In The Blood.

Along the way, it showcased a number of talented actors...

TV on DVD: 'MI-5: Volume 9'

7/15/2011 5:00pm EDT
This week, BBC Home Entertainment fulfilled its promise from earlier this year and brought us MI-5: Volume 9, the latest set of one of television's top dramas. Here's my review.

The Show

As I mentioned in my review of Volume 8, I'm a huge Spooks/MI-5 fan, and have been since the first episode. Even after all this time, when a new DVD set comes out, I run out and get it on release day and then spend the rest of my week watching it. It's definitely my favorite British series of all time and one of my favorite TV series of all time, period.

Yet there's a 'but' here. There's a rumor go...

New TV On DVD, Jan. 20

1/20/2009 8:00am EST
It's a British invasion, a fanged favorite, and blast from the past this week for new TV on DVD releases: MI-5 season 6, Moonlight the complete series, The Rockford Files season 6.

New TV On DVD, Jan. 8

The Riches
The Malloys are a family of "travelers," roving con artists who live perpetually on the fringes of society and just outside the reach of the law. The typically iconoclastic FX network comedy-drama series The Riches was dedicated to the proposition of "Stealing the American Dream." Season one is now on DVD. Also in stores: season one of The Tudors, seasons one and two of Rob & Big, season two of Two And A Half Men, season five of MI-5, and season six of The Waltons.

New TV on DVD, Jan. 9

New this week: season one of Extras and volume four of MI-5. Ricky Gervais heads the cast of "Extras" as Andy Millman, a would-be actor in his early forties who quits his day job to become a full-time movie and TV extra. The British espionage-adventure series "MI-5" pits undercover agents of the country's MI-5 squad (the U.K. equivalent of the CIA) against international troublemakers and terrorists.
