Q&A: 'Key and Peele' Star Jordan Peele

January 31st, 2012 2:00pm EST
Jordan Peele
Jordan Peele and his partner Keegan-Michael Key are out to bring a different brand of sketch comedy to television.

With their new series Key & Peele, which bows tonight on Comedy Central (10:30 ET/PT), they're aiming for many different targets. Last week they put a new spin on the State of the Union address and other sketches spoof Nazis and fraternities.

The former MadTV alums are entering a TV landscape where sketch comedy can be hit or miss. Some say Saturday Night Live is in decline. Other sketch shows have come and gone. What's going to make their show different? I sat down with Jord...

Comedy Central's Key & Peele To 'Translate' State of the Union

January 24th, 2012 9:00am EST
Key & Peele
Two Comedy Central stars are livening up tonight's State of the Union Address.

MadTV alums Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, stars of the new sketch comedy series Key & Peele, will be 'translating' President Barack Obama's remarks on Twitter as a way of introducing one of their characters before the show's debut.

@obamatranslated is the Twitter account of the President's 'anger translator' Luther (played by Key), who says what the President (played by Peele) is really thinking. Several 'Obama Translated' videos are already available on Comedy Central's YouTube channel. Here's the first...

Spoofing Up With The Kardashians - Watch The Funniest Parodies Of Kim Kardashian & Her Family (Video)

November 11th, 2011 3:00pm EST
Kardashian Spoofs
Kim Kardashian is an easy target. With her divorce from NBA player Kris Humphries making all the headlines lately; a sex tape that made her famous in the first place; and a family of socialites all driven to keep themselves in front of rolling cameras every minute of their lives it's no surprise that they get made fun of. A lot.

Saturday Night Live's ongoing spoof of sisters Kim, Kourtney and Khloe (played to near-perfection by Nasim Pedrad, Vanessa Bayer and Abby Elliott) has been recurring for a few seasons of the long-running late show, beginning with focus on Kim's butt to an all-out ...

Interview: Nicole Sullivan Rocks!

January 12th, 2009 10:56am EST
Nicole Sullivan
(TJAGS weekly column) It was 9:30 PM, on a Thursday night, and I was in the middle of dinner and (more than a few) drinks at a local establishment. My phone starts vibrating in my left pocket, I don't recognize the number. I sheepishly answer and on the other end is the unmistakable voice of Nicole Sullivan (MADtv, The King of Queens, Rita Rocks) asking if this was a good time to speak. Our interview, scheduled earlier in the day, had been postponed -- I had thought, wrongly -- to another day.

She did not want to impose and explained we could reschedule. "Nonsense," I said, "we can st...

In the hilarious sketch "Audrina Brings the Drama," Patridge visits the set and within a matter of minutes, turns the MADtv cast members against each other and raises late-night drama to new levels.

Patridge made her small-screen debut in 2005 as the fun and outgoing friend on the MTV series, "The Hills," a reality show documenting the lives of four young girls trying to make their mark in Los Angeles. She recently complet...

British Invasion: UK Shows Coming To America

August 26th, 2008 9:03am EDT
Life On Mars
With the American version of "The Office" still leading NBC's fall line-up, remakes of successful British shows have become a hot commodity. Picking up on this success, several networks have snatched up the rights to remake some of the most popular British shows. It's a process that has obviously worked in the past, at least in the world of reality television. "Dancing with the Stars," "Big Brother," and "Celebrity Fit Club" all had their start in the Fallen Empire, but remakes of drama and comedy haven't been nearly as successful. For better of for worse, here's a list of shows that will i...

'The Cho Show': Korean of the Year: Episode 1 Recap

August 22nd, 2008 11:21am EDT
Margaret Cho
The late 11pm start time for the first episode of "The Cho Show" on VH1 seemed to me to be an exciting harbinger of edgy, wickedly profane comedy to come. It all started promisingly enough: Comedienne extraordinaire Margaret Cho opened her new reality series with hard rock, a funny bit about Jack Black and his only towel (you had to be there) and a flash of her va-jay-jay - suitable and desired for a late-night crowd. Then something truly unexpected happened: Margaret became mundane.

The usually outrageous Cho is not only restrained in this series opener, she's downright neutered. Her ...

The Most Underrated & Overrated Influential TV Shows

August 22nd, 2008 9:28am EDT
Miami Vice
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and on television it often appears to be the only form of creativity. Yes, ever since Milton Berle first stole a joke for "Texaco Star Theatre", TV has been a wild west of borrowing material and copying good ideas until they've become completely stale. Many of these ideas were so good, in fact, that their resonance is still felt today, and that's when a show crosses over from being copied to being influential.

Over the years, many shows have been considered influential. From "The Dick Van Dyke Show" first showing both the home and office l...

Point/Counterpoint: Should They Make 'Jurassic Park IV?'

July 31st, 2008 9:24am EDT
Jurassic Park
"Jurassic Park IV" is currently "in production" with producers and writers working on the script. Many question whether a fourth film is necessary, particularly following what many call a disastrous third installment in the franchise. Two Starpulse writers have strong opinions on whether making a fourth film is really what the public needs or wants:

Point

Anyone who is familiar with my opinions on sequels and my general distaste for the work of Steven Spielberg are going to be surprised to learn that I love Jurassic Park and both of its sequels. Now don't get me wrong, the act...

Top 10 MADtv Actors

Dan Chruscinski
Previously filmed in Los Angeles, it's Saturday night. Never quite catching on with the same fervor as its New York competition, MADtv has still carved a niche for itself appealing to a younger demographic who favor repeat characters and dead-on celebrity impersonations over topical sketches. Like Saturday Night Live though, "MADtv" has had some fantastic cast members during its 13-year tenure as well as some real clunkers. Why focus on the bad though when we can celebrate the good. Some of these actors have gone on to mediocre careers; others still remain stuck in obscurity. Here are the ...
