September 2nd, 2010 11:26am EDT
Harvey Keitel
The producers behind hit TV show The Office want Harvey Keitel to take over from Steve Carell as the actor is "probably the only guy who can do it."

Carell won critical acclaim for his portrayal of embarrassing boss Michael Scott in the U.S. version of the British series, created by funnyman Ricky Gervais, but announced he will leave at the end of the current season. Gervais recently shot down rumors he would be stepping in to replace him, and now producer Paul Lieberstein has revealed they have another actor in mind for the part - Reservoir Dogs star Keitel.

Lieberstein tells E! News, "...

Are TV Remakes A Good Idea?

September 10th, 2009 4:27pm EDT
90210
Looking at the CW's Tuesday line up, it's almost like getting a blast from the past: "90210" and "Melrose Place" on again? Is it the 90s? No, they're just two examples of the new television remakes blasting onto the screen, and they're not alone. "Eastwick," based on the "Witches of Eastwick" movie, premieres on September 23 on ABC, and "V" (premiering Nov. 3) is a remake of a canceled science fiction series. Now ABC has the rights to adapt "St. Elmo's Fire" from the popular film, and NBC is bringing back their detective drama from the 70s "The Rockford Files."

This is hardly a new thin...

TV Wish List for 2009

December 29th, 2008 12:37pm EST
True Blood
It is time to bid farewell to the television of 2008 and welcome 2009 with open arms, but let it be with a sweet, friendly warning. TV viewers are fickle. One day we'll love your show, and the next we'll hate it. Sometimes all you have to do is steer a little off course, or introduce an irritating character, and then we abandon you to the cold. Yet TV viewers can be fiercely loyal, sticking to a show through seasons of awful dialogue just because we remember when it was great. The Writer's Strike put a real damper on new shows and old shows alike this year, but 2009 has a clean new slate to...

TV Year In Review: The Best, The Worst & The In Between

December 26th, 2008 7:31am EST
Breaking Bad
In a year that saw the writers strike bring forth more reality TV than we ever thought possible and reduce quality drama to a war of attrition, the boob tube still managed to deliver quality drama series at an impressive clip.

BEST TV DRAMAS OF 2008

5. "BREAKING BAD" (AMC) - The aforementioned strike meant we only got seven episodes of former "X-Files" writer Vince Gilligan's masterful meth-strewn series, but after enduring its visceral fury, could we have really taken anymore?

Unlike another suburban drug dealing series, the torpid "Weeds", "Breaking Bad" offers a modern-d...

TV Ratings Wars: Who's Winning?

October 31st, 2008 2:09pm EDT
House
There is plenty of conflict and drama on primetime television, but the real war is for viewers. The better ratings a show has, the more valuable its advertising slots are. So who are winning the first battles of the fall season?

Thursday has long been the biggest night for network television. A big reason for this is that movies come out on Fridays, so movie producers want to advertise heavily on Thursday nights to try to get you to come out and see their movie the following weekend.

So far, CBS has been winning big on Thursdays. The newest installment of Survivor has been ...

'Eleventh Hour' Vs. 'Life On Mars'

October 10th, 2008 4:05pm EDT
Life On Mars
Two of this season's most anticipated new shows debuted in the same time slot Thursday night. The new series Eleventh Hour aired on CBS, and opposite of that on ABC was the premiere of Life on Mars. The two shows put up impressive numbers in their first episodes, with Life of Mars' 7.7 edging out Eleventh Hour's 7.3 in the Nielsen Ratings. Both shows drew more viewers than the long-running ER, which came in with a 6.0 for NBC.

Eleventh Hour is based on a U.K. series of the same name. Rufus Sewell stars as Dr. Jacob Hood, a brilliant biophysicist recruited by the FBI to invest...

TV: What Makes A New Show Successful?

September 22nd, 2008 11:42am EDT
Mad Men
During the 2007-2008 television season, the major networks premiered thirty-four new series, but only eleven of those shows will be coming back for a second run. This fall, a handful of new shows will take their shot at finding their audience. So, what is it that makes a show successful? What makes them fail? When it comes down to it, a show will have to have good writing for people to want to keep watching it, but it is getting the viewers to watch in the first place that is the challenging task. Of course, there are many different strategies to attract viewers and stay on the air, an...

Must See (& Must Skip) New Dramas This Fall

August 27th, 2008 8:40am EDT
My Own Worst Enemy
Christian Slater has only one facial expression. His eyebrows are permanently arched in a slightly questioning yet slightly sinister gaze; he has a five o'clock shadow that no pancake makeup ever seems to hide; and his eyes are dark and brooding, appearing beady and almost dead without the proper glint from three-point lighting.

Skip "My Own Worst Enemy"

Yet NBC's My Own Worst Enemy (Monday nights at 9 p.m. starting Oct. 13) have him playing two very distinct men: Henry, the slightly dippy family man living in pre-fab suburbia, and Edward, a Jason Bourne-esque operative for a se...

British Invasion: UK Shows Coming To America

Life On Mars
With the American version of "The Office" still leading NBC's fall line-up, remakes of successful British shows have become a hot commodity. Picking up on this success, several networks have snatched up the rights to remake some of the most popular British shows. It's a process that has obviously worked in the past, at least in the world of reality television. "Dancing with the Stars," "Big Brother," and "Celebrity Fit Club" all had their start in the Fallen Empire, but remakes of drama and comedy haven't been nearly as successful. For better of for worse, here's a list of shows that will i...
