Max Martini: An Underrated Star's Breakout On The Big Screen

January 20th, 2014 12:17pm EST
Max Martini
For four seasons, we enjoyed watching Max Martini's nuanced and intense performance on CBS's The Unit - so we were thrilled when this underrated actor broke out on the big screen with roles in blockbuster flicks Pacific Rim and Captain Phillips. BFTV had the chance to sit down with Max last week to discuss his successful 2013, and how his career is changing because of it.

"I had a great year," he reflected. "It kind of started with Pacific Rim. I got Pacific Rim, I was offered a part in Batman that I couldn't do because of Pacific Rim. Then I got a movie called 42 I didn't do, because at t...

Q&A: Shawn Doyle Plays A Brilliant 'Endgame'

January 9th, 2012 2:05pm EST
Endgame
Can you solve crimes without ever leaving one building? That's the idea behind Endgame, a Canadian series that gets a second life on Hulu starting today.

In Endgame, veteran actor Shawn Doyle (Big Love, 24, Lie To Me) plays Russian chess champion Arkady Balagan, who's confined himself to a hotel after witnessing the murder of his fiancee. Arkady is both brilliant and difficult, but when he's convinced to apply his powers of observation to the disappearance of a young boy, he finds another use for his amazing talent. With the help of hotel staff and a grad student, Arkady tackles a ...

Q&A: Interrogating 'Take The Money and Run's' Paul Bishop

August 16th, 2011 3:00pm EDT
Paul Bishop
With the glut of police shows on TV, many people think they're smarter than the cops. ABC's Take The Money and Run allows people to test that theory - pitting them against real detectives and real interrogators. One of the latter is 35-year veteran Paul Bishop, who is himself also a screenwriter and novelist. Recenty, Paul dropped by to talk about his role on the new game show, as well as his own creative exploits.

First things first: you don't just play one on TV, you're a real interrogator. Tell our readers a little bit about you and your law enforcement background.

I have 35 y...

'Castle' Recap: 3x21 - 'The Dead Pool' Wades Into The World Of Swimming, Drugs And Murder

April 12th, 2011 12:54pm EDT
castle1
If there’s one thing the Olympics taught us, it’s that the competitive world of swimming is cutthroat, fierce, and populated with attractive men. ‘The Dead Pool’ starts with a young swimmer doing what he does best. Suddenly a dark figure approaches him. Cut to Castle, discussing his young writer friend Alex Conrad who is going to be in town. Castle wants Alex to follow him and Beckett around. Predictably, Beckett is not into this scenario at all. My prediction: Beckett is going to be charmed by Alex. Or Alex is actually the murderer.

Castle and Beckett arrive at the crime scene. The swimme...

'Lie To Me' 3.13 'Killer App' Review

February 1st, 2011 1:44am EST
Lie To Me
Man, Ashton Holmes must be really bitter about being killed off Nikita, because now he's turned the tables and knocking people off himself on the third-season (series?) finale of Lie To Me. Okay, I'm kidding about that first part, but he certainly plays bad so very well. In fact, he's made Gillian cry. You do not make Gillian Foster cry.

Two days earlier, Cal is busy annoying the daylights out of Zach Morstein (Holmes), who's one of the young wunderkinds behind a social networking program called SeekOut. He's there to tell Zach that he knows all about his evil plan, thanks to Zach's f...

'Lie To Me' 3.12 'Gone' Review

January 25th, 2011 1:01am EST
Lie To Me
If anything, tonight's Lie To Me proves that some people just shouldn't have kids.

The episode centers around a child abduction, and while the mother Collette (Episodes star Kathleen Rose Perkins) blames unknown assailants, her husband Lane (Doug Hutchison, who strangely also just appeared in the episode "Funhouse" two weeks ago as the victim there, at least if you believe FOX's official press releases) would rather hold her responsible for losing their daughter. The situation blatantly exposes how dysfunctional their marriage is, namely because of how emotionally abusive he is. To find...

'Lie To Me' 3.11 'Saved' Review

January 18th, 2011 1:00am EST
Lie to Me
I have a sneaking suspicion that the impetus of tonight's Lie To Me was the tragic death of Los Angeles Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart; at least, it's the first thing I think of when the District Attorney brings Cal footage of a car accident in which a successful rookie pitcher is killed and three guys are joyriding in the car that hit him. However, that's just the start of his investigation, which leads him to a paramedic named Ilene (Annabeth Gish, Brotherhood), whom he quickly pegs as an adrenaline junkie. By the end of the first act, he finds himself in an eerily similar car accide...

Brittany's TCA 2011 Blog: FOX - 'Chicago Code,' 'American Idol,' 'Terra Nova,' & More

January 12th, 2011 12:00pm EST
Chicago Code
FOX had its Television Critics Association presentation Tuesday, and from my front-row (literally) seat, I confirmed what I felt has been the case for awhile: while the network has consistently strong dramas, it still needs to find some reliable comedies - at least when it comes to ones that aren't animated.

Here's how the day played out:

The Chicago Code

The highlight of my day was easily the presentation for Shawn Ryan's new drama, The Chicago Code (premiering February 7). Given Ryan's pedigree as the creator of The Shield, The Unit and the recently axed Terriers, the buzz - and the ex...

The stars of "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" were the big winners at the People's Choice Awards in Los Angeles on Wednesday night.

Pattinson and Stewart also missed out on the Favorite Movie Star Under 25 Award - to Zac Efron.

But then the movie vampires took over, winning four big awards, including the night's Favorite Movie honor and Favorite Movie Actress (Stewart).

'Nikita's' Ashton Holmes Finds New Role On 'Lie To Me'

December 12th, 2010 3:10am EST
Nikita
It's always fun when two of the shows I cover share people.

For those of you (myself included) who were sad to see Ashton Holmes exit Nikita in this week's episode, there's some solace to be had: he's just been cast in a guest role on Lie To Me in a January episode that might sound suspiciously like a popular film.

Movieline reports that Ashton's collared the role of Zach Morstein, the co-founder of a social networking site who becomes a murder suspect when one of his colleagues ends up dead.

Before Holmes (pictured here in a scene from "2.0" with Tiffany Hines) joined Nikita, he also ...

'Lie to Me' Recap - 'Double Blind'

October 27th, 2010 3:13pm EDT
Lie_to_Me
It's getting a little old now to have the "Lightman falls for bad girl but is really playing her or is he being played" storyline. Especially since last week that exact storyline happened with the dirty cop. We get it. Lightman can be an idiot about women, and he has a fatal attraction to bad types. From now on we can assume that any woman he is attracted to will turn out to be evil in some way. It didn't exactly surprise the audience that Tricia Helfer was a con artist, since the previews for the episode indicated that as did the episode summary. So why spend half an episode trying to pret...

'Lie to Me' Recap - 'Dirty Royal'

October 20th, 2010 7:02am EDT
Lie_to_Me
It's the third season of Lie to Me, and there's a lot of warning flags going up even this early into the season that Lightman's getting too big for his britches. Yes, his arrogance is one of the things the audience loves him for, but there is such a thing as too far and he's slowly heading in that direction. It has more to do with the lack of connection he's had with the team so far. They were like an odd little family unit before, and now they seem very spread out. He's fighting with Foster constantly, Torres is usually just around to look confused and wide eyed, and Loker is trying to get...

'Lie To Me' Recap - 'In The Red'

October 6th, 2010 1:54pm EDT
Lie To me - FOX
It's a little jarring that Lie to Me ended its second season only a month ago, but circumstances picked up the new season early. You see, Lone Star was cancelled very, very quickly, and so FOX pushed up the premiere date. It wasn't supposed to be back until mid-November, but here it is, back to the slot right after House. In the finale of last season, the show was a bit shaken up by the brutal shooting of FBI Agent Ben Reynolds, and Torres and Loker hooked up but then split apart due to his promotion. Neither of those things are discussed in the premiere, which is annoying, and for some rea...

Mekhi Phifer Tells Us The Truth About 'Lie To Me'

Mekhi Phifer went straight from the end of ER to join the cast of Lie to Me. You saw him in the season premiere as special agent Ben Reynolds from the FBI. Now that the Lightman group helped his judge pass the vetting process, he's going to be on board for future cases.

"The FBI has required their services for all their top priority cases and I kind of came along with that package," Phifer said. "From bombings to kidnappings, I know the next episode we have a big Vegas episode. We're dealing with poker players and the World Series of Poker. The stories just never end."

Tim Roth Discusses Season Two Of 'Lie To Me'

September 28th, 2009 10:00am EDT
Tim Roth interview, Lie to Me
Lie to Me became a midseason hit last Spring, offering an intriguing new perspective on crime solving. The Lightman Group specializes in recognizing facial micro-expressions. No matter what the suspect tells them, they know what he or she is really thinking. It's based on the real science of Paul Ekman. Tim Roth plays Cal Lightman on the show, the ultimate human lie detector.

Roth says he has no interest in using the science in real life. As soon as he's done for the day, he shuts off. On TV though, we've seen him call the falafel cart guy on not washing his hands and even warn a woman o...

The Bad: Dancing With The Stars is extremely popular, however sometimes too much of a ...

A Conversation with 'Lie To Me' Star Monica Raymund

February 4th, 2009 10:49am EST
Monica Raymund
(TJAGS is a weekly column) Every year I try to pick a new drama to watch and make it my "new show" that I follow for the season. This does not always work out (see: Love Monkey and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip). I had decided that Lie to Me was going to be this year's show, based mainly on my appreciation for Tim Roth (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction). Due to circumstances, I was out of town and I never got a chance to watch the two episodes I had recorded on DVR when, coincidentally, I was contacted and asked if I wanted to speak to one of the stars, Monica Raymund. I agreed, of course, and ...
