Mathers remembered his former co-star on Facebook, posting: "I was so sad to hear today of the passing of my dear friend and business associate Frank Bank, who played Lumpy on Leave it to Beaver. He was a character and always kept us laughing. My deepest condolences to Frank's family."

Look! I'm A TV Star!

The Hills
People used to believe in fictional television. They didn't believe that it was real, simply that it was an honest fabrication of reality, a mild funhouse reflecting life as it is lived. They watched whether they could identify with it or not; they watched to imagine the lives they saw on the screen. Some still do. But others, a growing majority, watch reality television; they take comfort in the truthful depictions, no, profiles of the lives of others. These shows cannot be melodramatic, cannot be dismissed as over-the-top like Grey's Anatomy. They are "real."

Bad Dads & Rad Dads On TV

June 13th, 2008 8:44am EDT
The Brady Bunch
Back when television was young, TV fathers were portrayed as all knowing and in control. Fathers knew best. They dispensed unchallenged wisdom. They were calm and smiling and never seemed pressured by any circumstance. They were always clad in a shirt and tie, even while relaxing at home.

The TV fathers of the 50s and 60s had a ready answer for their children, all who sat with rapt attention to the father's every word. "Gee, Dad," said Wally of Leave It to Beaver, "I never thought about it that way." The Brady kids would also express the same types of revelation after a counseling ses...

New TV on DVD, Nov. 22

Leave it to Beaver
The complete first season of Leave it to Beaver is now on DVD. The Cleavers lived in the town of Mayfield and shared many of the same trials and tribulations as the "nuclear families" who comprised the show's fan base. What really sold the series was the warm, realistic rapport between the Cleaver kids and their parents, and the authentic-sounding dialogue, full of the slang and idioms common to youngsters of the Eisenhower era.

Other releases this week:

Seinfeld Seasons 5 and 6

The Golden Girls The Complete Third Season

Aeon Flux The Complete Animated Collection
