NBC Orders 'Law & Order' True Crime Anthology Series

4/10/2016 12:03pm EDT
NBC Orders 'Law & Order' True Crime Anthology Series
NBC is expanding the Law & Order brand from "ripped from the headlines" to directly dramatizing real crimes, announcing this week a new program called Law & Order: True Crime.

An anthology series similar to FX's highly successful American Crime Story, Law & Order: True Crime will likewise be dramatic versions of high-profile cases. The first one in production will be Law & Order: True Crime - The Menendez Brothers Murders, from the 1996 tragedy in which Erik and Lyle Menendez were convicted of murdering their parents.

No premiere date has been set and no talent has been attached aside fro...

Duggar Family Scandals Are Inspiring, But Not In A Good Way

Duggar Family Scandals Inspire TV Crime Drama: Sexual Abuse, Inc
The Duggar family spent seven years inspiring 19 Kids and Counting fans with what appeared to be a wholesome lifestyle until Josh Duggar's sexual abuse and cheating scandals forced TLC to pull the reality show off the air.

Now the scandals are inspiring others, at least the folks who produce NBC's crime drama, Law & Order: SVU. The network plans to air an episode on November 4 with a storyline inspired by controversial family member Josh Duggar's sexual abuse scandal and Jim Bob and Michelle's alleged attempt to cover it up.

In what may be a coincidence, the show will air on the birthday ...

Taylor Swift To Make Cameo On Pal Mariska Hargitay's 'Law & Orde
One of Taylor Swift's dreams is coming true -- she's appearing on pal Mariska Hargitay's show "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit." The singer is such a fan of the series, she event named her cat after the star's character, Olivia Benson.

Swift, 25, and Hargitay, 51, finally met last year, and the actress even appeared in the singer's music video "Bad Blood."

In exchange, Hargitay sought a role for Swift on her series. She told "Entertainment Tonight': "We talked about it. We're going to wait until the end of (Swift's current) tour to see how it goes. But it's in the air."

Swift likely w...

‘Law & Order SVU’ Winter Premiere: ‘Forgiving Rollins’

1/8/2015 10:09am EST
Law & Order SVU
Happy New Year, SVUers!! We’re starting the year off on a somber note, with Rollins’ painful admission of being raped by her former boss, deputy chief Patton (Harry Hamlin) in the “Forgiving Rollins” winter premiere episode.

Kelli Giddish (Amanda Rollins) gives a phenomenal performance as a sexual assault survivor battling PTSD; the more Rollins tries to keep her dark encounter hidden the more emotionally unhinged she outwardly appears to be.

Triggering those skeletons is the “SVU” crew’s case of the week: an Atlanta-based detective, Reese (Dreama Walker of “The Good Wife” and “Don’t Trus...

‘Law & Order SVU’ Midseason Finale

12/11/2014 9:08am EST
Law & Order SVU
Welcome back, SVU-viewers. Is it just me or did those two weeks on hiatus feel like two years? Now that we’ve seen every holiday-based SNL made, we’re back to NBC’s regularly scheduled "Law & Order SVU" show about sex crime scenarios, or what I’ve been nicknaming it lately “Ripped from the Headlines: Real Life Sex Crime Re-enactments,” but on a serious note the midseason finale covers a topic that should be in more headlines: backlogs of rape kits that go uninvestigated throughout the country.

Given the amount of sexual assaults happening, if you read daily papers, it’s definitely a releva...

'Law & Order SVU': Ray Rice Themed Episode: No More

'Law & Order SVU' Recap: Ray Rice Themed Episode: No More
Has everyone recovered from last week’s “Chicago Crossover” episodes? I hope so because it’s back to “SVU’s” regularly scheduled headline-swiping episodes.

In “SVU’s” 9th episode “Spousal Privilege,” the detectives tackle (no pun intended) a pro-footballer that may be abusing his girlfriend. The whole episode is pretty vague in terms of how often the abuse occurs, mainly because the baby mama Paula (Meagan Good) refuses to admit it’s happening, until she doesn’t have a choice.

An online image-infused bulletin board, you know the one that posted the celebs leaked nude pics, posted security...

‘Law & Order SVU’ Recap: ‘Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D. Crossover’

11/13/2014 10:31am EST
Law & Order SVU
The much hyped “Chicago Crossover” episode of “Law & Order SVU” has finally landed on our TV screens. Was it worth the money in advertising? Eh, maybe if you’re a “Chicago P.D.” fan. Picking up where the Chi-town firefighters left off on “Chicago Fire”—firefighters uncover some child porn pics in a burning house that could be traced to New York and “P.D.” detective Lindsay’s half brother is one of the victims—SVU squad finds the stills are connected to a live stream site put up by a child sex trafficking ring. The Feds attempt to take down the site, but are thwarted by the pedophilia membe...

Which Unpleasant TV Characters Do You Work With?

11/8/2014 2:00pm EST
Jan Brady
I worked with quite a number of “characters” when I was on staff as an advertising copywriter. I have to say that my two most memorable ones are “Jan Brady” and “Gregory House, M.D.”

As the youngest of three writers at one of my agencies, Jan was between our senior colleague and myself on the org chart. She was the middle sister in her birth family and recreated her center sibling frustrations and anxieties at work every day. Although I was not the focus of Jan’s resentment, (I was “Cindy” in this scenario), I, along with the rest of our co-workers, got treated to a daily (and draining) do...

‘Law & Order SVU': Top 6 Real life Vs. Fiction Moments in ‘Glasgowman's Wrath’

11/6/2014 9:57am EST
Law & Order SVU
Just as your favorite diner has that all too familiar apple pie on your plate whenever you visit, “SVU’s” season 16 has become just as dependable for serving up ripped from the headlines tales. Welcome back, “Law & Order” fiends. In this week’s installment writers narrow in on the “Slender Man” case; three pre-teen girls in Wisconsin secretly make a trip to a wooden area to honor a mythical Internet character called Slender Man. In doing so, they tried to sacrifice their friend by stabbing her 19 times. The young victim managed to survive and thrive after the harrowing ordeal.

6 Powerful Scenes From Duke Porn Star Inspired 'Law & Order SVU' 'Porn Star Requiem' Episode

6 Powerful Scenes From Duke Porn Star Inspired 'Law & Order SVU'
"SVU’s" “Porn Stars Requiem” episode picks up where the writers left off: on a never-ending loop of ripped from the headlines story lines. Suddenly the vision of a newbie writer slaving over an original sex-based trauma tale to present to the exec producers comes to mind, only to find it in the trash alongside “Law & Order L.A.” But I digress; this week’s installment is inspired by Duke porn star Belle Knox, a staunch defender of using porn to pay her college tuition, and the recent spike in college sexual assaults. In SVU’s case the coed/porn star attends Hudson University and is the victi...

‘Law & Order SVU’ Season 16 Episode 4 Recap: ‘Holden’s Manifesto’

10/16/2014 9:15am EDT
Law & Order SVU
I know how the SVU writers spent their summer vacations; thumbing through newspapers for the most heinous sexual crimes that would make up season 16. We’re already four episodes deep into the season and I already want to draw up a petition removing the “no actual person is represented “disclaimer shown at the beginning of each episode.

Yet, if the well is full they might as well draw from it. In “Holden’s Manifesto” we’re introduced to Holden, a narcissistic documentarian with a penchant for getting revenge on all his unrequited loves. If you’ve recently been struck by déjà vu, it’s becaus...

‘Law & Order SVU' Season 16, Episode 3 Recap Best and Worst Scenes of 'Producer's Backend'

10/9/2014 9:47am EDT
Law & Order: SVU
Taking another page out of the real life playbook “Producer’s Backend” centers on a former child star with a penchant for causing havoc (sound familiar?) to herself, but mostly to others around her. Fortunately, Liv gets to the root of how and why the former child star is such a law-bending emotional train wreck. Below are eight of the best and worst scenes from “Producer’s Backend.”

BEST- Miranda Rights Done Right

Amaro is still adorned in his rookie blue uniform (Thought bubble: Will we ever see him in a suit and tie again?) while responding to a traffic accident. Two women are bickerin...

‘Law & Order: SVU’ Five Real Life Vs. Fiction Scenes In Season 16, Episode 2 ‘American Disgrace’

10/2/2014 8:48am EDT
Law and Order SVU
It may seem a little early for the “Law & Order: SVU” writers to be thumbing through newspapers in search of story ideas. But considering the treasure trove of relevant material that’s runneth over its best to get those “real life inspired” storylines onto the small screen.

The latest episode in the collection is “American Disgrace” an amalgam of Solange elevatorgate and the Donald Sterling racial controversy. The latter makes an early appearance when introduced to America’s sweetheart athlete. He steps into the elevator with the owner of his biggest clothing sponsor, his daughter and thei...

Top 6 Ripped from Headlines 'Law & Order: SVU' Episodes - Sound Familiar?

It’s often said real life is stranger than fiction and no show exploits that more than “Law & Order: SVU” The show’s latest dip into the real life pool of sexual depravity is tonight’s triple themed episode circulating around Beyonce/Jay Z/ Solange elevator-gate, Donald Sterling and Ray Rice brouhahas that were, you guessed it, ripped from the headlines. To salute these déjà-vu inducing moments, I’ve rounded up the top 6 “Law & Order: SVU” episodes based on real life cases.

‘Law & Order: SVU Season 16 Premiere Recap 'Save Benson Baby'

9/25/2014 10:05am EDT
Law & Order: SVU
Noah may be safely in Liv’s arms but she’s still obsessed with getting answers to his mom’s murder. To refresh your memory: Noah’s mommy was raped and burned to death for turning on the cartel she was involved in as a prostitute. In the season 16 premiere episode “Girls Disappearing,” she recruits nearly all the detectives, or former detectives (looking at you Amaro) to go undercover and unearth the killer still a threat to Liv and baby Noah.

The Case

Amaro’s been demoted a beat cop after his rage-fueled meltdown last season. On duty, he spots a John having sex with an underage prostitute...

‘Law & Order: SVU’s’ Olivia Benson's Got A New Attitude In Season 16

9/24/2014 11:07am EDT
‘Law & Order: SVU’s’ Olivia Benson's Got A New Attitude In Seas
For 15 seasons Liv Benson has pushed the envelope in getting justice for her victims at Manhattan’s sex crimes unit, even if it meant putting her own safety at risk. How many “Law & Order:SVU” fans out there remember cringing at Liv’s own close encounters at nearly being a sex assault victim? *raises hand*

Well, fan girls and guys it isn’t getting any easier in Benson’s world. Yes, she escaped the dark excesses of hell the psychopath Lewis gave her a tour of, and found a silver lining in baby Noah, who she became foster mom too.Yet, where there are predators there detective Liv will be. An...

Prediction: Law & Order: SVU’s Olivia Benson Will Be One Badass TV Mom This Season

9/7/2014 3:00pm EDT
Prediction: Law & Order: SVU’s Olivia Benson Will Be One Badass
A baby can change your life – or in the case of ‘Law & Order: SVU,’ it can breath new life into a series that is entering its sixteenth season.

Used to be, the show’s biggest difference from year to year was the hair color and cut of “Olivia Benson” (Mariska Hargitay). But on September 24th, the new acting commander will be pulling double duty as the court-appointed custodial guardian of “Noah Porter,” the baby who was orphaned at the end of last season.

For the trial period of one year, she will join the ranks of New York City mothers; and although we’re a tough bunch (I’ve been one for ...

Call 911: Cop Shows Have Officially Taken A Turn For The Absurd

8/3/2014 12:25pm EDT
Call 911: Cop Shows Have Officially Taken A Turn For The Absurd
Who’s solving crime on television these days?

On one hand we’ve got “Detectives Olivia Benson” (Mariska Hargitay) and “Fin Tutuola” (Ice-T) careening up, siren blaring with the red light spinning on top of the car; the ubiquitous ‘Blue Bloods’ clan; the squads from ‘Rookie Blue’, ‘Major Crimes’, ‘Hawaii Five-0’, ‘Longmire’ and ‘Chicago PD’; plus those two from ‘Motive’, not to be confused with the other two from ‘The Bridge’ or ‘The Killing’ or ‘Murder In The First’.

What they all have in common is that, at least in these procedural dramas, all the characters are “on the job.” The down si...

Don’t Move To New York City Based Solely On What You See On TV: A User’s Guide

7/28/2014 2:00pm EDT
Don’t Move To New York City Based Solely On What You See On TV:
As a born and bred New Yorker, I’m drawn to shows about my city, taking comfort in the familiar sights and settings; yet I often find myself asking, “Did the writers of some of these shows ever step foot in Manhattan?”

I can shake off the inconsistencies, but I sometimes wonder about all the people saving their babysitting and paper route money hoping to someday move to the Big Apple hoping to mirror the glamorous life seen on the small screen.

Hence, a guide to separating fact from fiction:

‘Smash’ only lasted two seasons, but it was long enough to get your hopes up that moving here wo...

The Top 10 Television Lawyers

6/10/2014 2:00pm EDT
The Top 10 Television Lawyers
In honor of the return of Suits - which features Harvey Specter, the best attorney currently practicing on television - we're recognizing our Top 10 Television Lawyers. Legal dramas are a staple on the small screen, and they've given us some fantastic litigators over the years.

Our list has only two criteria for inclusion: 1) That the character must be a practicing lawyer. No characters who just have law degrees, retired lawyers, or ex-lawyers. During the run of their show, we have to have seen them in the courtroom.

2) The characters are ranked by who we'd most want to represent us in co...

Jonathan Silverman Tackles A Bold Role In Tonight's 'Law & Order: SVU'

Jonathan Silverman Tackles A Bold Role In Tonight's 'Law & Order
Jonathan Silverman is an immensely likeable actor, and as far as we know, a pretty darn good person in real life, too. Which makes it so deliciously strange that he's playing a rapist in tonight's episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Jonathan joined BFTV on Monday to discuss his SVU character, comic Josh Galloway, and what it's like for him to turn bad.

How did he get the part? "First of all, [SVU showrunner] Warren Leight is a God in my eyes and he knows I would do anything to work with him again. I was lucky enough to be in the West Coast premiere of his wonderful play Glimmer, ...

Lena later accuses her boyfriend of rape, turning to Rollins for help. The subsequent investigation uncovers a "dangerous love triangle," es...

2013 Fall TV Preview: The Returning Shows On NBC

9/5/2013 3:15pm EDT
Chicago Fire
I documented NBC's woes last week. Other bloggers and critics have documented NBC's woes. The network's like a kid that's get picked on, and then the sweetest mother in the world tries to help that child fit in and feel included. There isn't the sweetest mother blogger. Anyone writing about NBC anywhere is piling on. I'm sort of excited for the day The CW beats NBC. It'll probably never happen.

CHICAGO FIRE returns on Tuesday, September 24 at 10PM

Treat Williams WILL return for season two. There's baby drama for Lauren German's character. Lauren German and Treat Williams are enough for me...

Mike Tyson Facing Protests Over 'Law & Order: SVU' Role

1/29/2013 7:05pm EST
Mike Tyson
Activists have set up a petition urging TV bosses to drop convicted rapist Mike Tyson from an upcoming episode of crime drama Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

The former boxer has landed a cameo role in a new episode of the cop show, playing a murderer with a murky past, but the casting has infuriated campaigners against sexual violence.

The series often features storylines about sex crimes, and activists claim producers should have avoided casting Tyson because of his 1992 rape conviction.

A petition urging show bosses to drop Tyson has been set up on the website and has...

'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit' Review: 'Lost Reputation/Above Suspicion' (14.01/14.02)

9/27/2012 9:00am EDT
Law & Order: SVU
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit got a shot in the arm last season with its major cast turnover, finishing one chapter and starting a new one. How does the show keep its momentum? By bringing in a pair of top-tier guest stars in Adam Baldwin and Paget Brewster, keeping Dean Winters around, and giving more attention to Dann Florek. It all adds up to the start of an intriguing season for SVU.

Picking up where the thirteenth-season finale left off, Special Victims Unit boss Captain Cragen (Florek) has woken up with a dead woman in his bed - the witness who previously approached Dete...
