Jay Leno's Move to Primetime: Brilliant or Desperate?

December 9th, 2008 2:13pm EST
Jay Leno
This afternoon, NBC announced a breakthrough plan for fall 2009 that is unlike any other line-up ever produced.

It was well documented that this spring Jay Leno would be stepping down from his 16 year post at The Tonight Show. Late Night host Conan O'Brien would move into the 11:35/10:35c slot, and former SNL cast member Jimmy Fallon would be taking over for Conan on Late Night.

These moves led to speculation that Jay would in fact not be retiring, but instead ink a lucrative deal to create a new show on a competing network. With these talks moving from rumor to reality, NBC reali...

TV: What Makes A New Show Successful?

September 22nd, 2008 11:42am EDT
Mad Men
During the 2007-2008 television season, the major networks premiered thirty-four new series, but only eleven of those shows will be coming back for a second run. This fall, a handful of new shows will take their shot at finding their audience. So, what is it that makes a show successful? What makes them fail? When it comes down to it, a show will have to have good writing for people to want to keep watching it, but it is getting the viewers to watch in the first place that is the challenging task. Of course, there are many different strategies to attract viewers and stay on the air, an...

NBC Takes A Chance With 2008-09 Schedule, Year-Round Programming

April 3rd, 2008 8:36am EDT
Heroes
You've got to hand it to NBC. The once mighty network has been reduced to a perennial loser, regularly coming in behind the rest of the Big Four in every conceivable metric. So instead of trying in vain to come from behind in a game being dominated by CBS and Fox, NBC co-chairman Ben Silverman and company are taking a different approach. They are changing the way the game is played.

Already breaking from convention (by unveiling their new schedule six weeks before the traditional upfront presentations), the hardworking folks at NBC proved that they sincerely meant it when they said ...

2007 TV Year In Review: Top 5 Dramas

December 28th, 2007 12:00pm EST
Sopranos
Due to the writers strike, many shows stayed on the air this fall even though their ratings were poor. The future doesn't look so good for programs such as Bionic Woman, Journeyman, and K-Ville. There are, however, several dramas that cemented their places in our "must see" lists.

Top 5 Dramas:

5. "Dexter" - While this show has never really delivered on the intimate look into a psychopath that it seemed to promise in its initial previews, it does remain one of the more entertaining pieces of pulp on television. This season saw Dexter's underwater burial ground discovered, causing...

Which New TV Shows Are On The Chopping Block?

October 11th, 2007 11:21am EDT
Cavemen
We're a few weeks into the new fall season, and I have to say that I am a little disappointed. Many new shows seemed promising, but I just haven't seen one that could be a runaway hit.

After only two weeks into the fall season some are already in danger of being canceled. TV fans should get ready to start campaigning for their favorites before they disappear forever.

The majority of new series have been dropping in the ratings. In fact, none of the new shows have even cracked the Nielsen top 10. However, "Bionic Woman" and "Private Practice" did make it into the top 15.

Gossip Girl
Independent media agency TargetCast tcm has picked five new network shows they think will be hits, along with the five they think will fall to the bottom of the heap as the primetime season begins in a week.

"Chuck" (Mondays at 8 Eastern), a comedy about a computer geek who becomes the government's most valuable secret agent, looks promising, the agency says. Also on NBC, "Bionic Woman" (Weds, 9 p.m.) should prove popular, borrowing from the 70s hit "Six Million Dol...
