Well-Schooled in Murder
Thomas Lynley and Barbara Havers try to find a missing student at Bredgar Hall. The young boy is found dead and it's up to Lynley and Havers to discover which of the students is a murderer. But, complicating matters is the fact that Lynley's childhood friend is both the headmaster and a suspect.

Missing Joseph
A reverend is found dead in the woods, having been poisoned. Inspector Lynley has to investigate whether a jealous person murdered the reverend because he was having an affair. Strangely, the police seem strangely adamant that the reverend's death was accidental. But things get even more interesting when the woman the reverend was dining with exactly resembles his supposedly deceased wife.

Payment in Blood
Inspector Lynley and Sergeant Havers are called on the investigate the murder of a playwright. Lynley is reunited with Helen Clyde, one of the suspects in the murder, who he's had a relationship with in the past.

For the Sake of Elena
Thomas Lynley investigates the murder of a young deaf student named Elena at Cambridge University, a murder that may be linked to a suicide months before. The investigation leads Lynley to investigate Elena's step-mother and past lovers. Barbara Havers' concern over her mother's increasing Alzheimer's is only compounded when she realizes her care worker is scaring the older woman into being quiet by pretending a cane is a snake. Havers makes the difficult choice to put her mother in a care facility.
