'How I Met Your Mother' Review: Cristin Milioti Returns In 'The Lighthouse'

November 5th, 2013 9:08am EST
Sweeps month kicked off at CBS with How I Met Your Mother’s eighth episode of their final season.  “The Lighthouse” picked up Saturday morning of the weekend of Barney and Robin’s wedding.  At brunch, there is still some hostility between Robin and Barney’s mother Loretta.  It is important to Barney that they bury the hatchet, but he doesn’t know how to get them to make up.  They continue to fight through breakfast, resulting in a ridiculous fight about who makes better scrambled eggs.

Lily was still dealing with the bomb that Marshall had dropped on her.  Marshall had accepted a judgeship...

'How I Met Your Mother': No Questions Asked (9x07)

November 2nd, 2013 1:45am EDT
How I Met Your Mother
I'd say this episode was a decent one - one of the stronger ones in a thus far mediocre season. It had a few things that I didn't like, but it stuck to a tight premise and really rolled with it, finding creative things to do with all of these characters.

Daphne has sent a text to Lily that reveals that Marshall has agreed to become a judge. Marshall is horrified, and calls his friends to ask them a favor. He calls Barney, Robin and Ted to ask them to sneak into Lily's room, get her phone, and delete the last text she received. No. Questions. Asked. They all do crazy things to try and get t...

How I Met Your Mother bosses in talks for spin-off

October 31st, 2013 4:00am EDT
How I Met Your Mother
TV bosses behind How I Met Your Mother are planning a spin-off, according to U.S. reports.

The hit sitcom, which stars Neil Patrick Harris, Jason Segel and Alyson Hannigan, is in the midst of its ninth and final season, but creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas may continue their reign on television with a new show.

Bays and Thomas, along with former Saturday Night Live writer Emily Spivey, have pitched an all-female comedy called How I Met Your Father, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Like its predecessor, the spin-off would tell the tale of a group of friends living in New York and f...

'How I Met Your Mother': Review: 'No Questions Asked'

October 29th, 2013 7:12pm EDT
“No Questions Asked” is a useless episode of television, the worst kind of filler episode. Filler episodes should entertain. How I Met Your Mother hasn’t entertained in four years. The episode’s full of pointless and baseless gags, useless flashbacks, a horrible spoof of ghost shows, and hollow resolutions. For an episode so useless, the two important stories of the episode, Marshall’s hesitance to tell Lily the truth, and Barney and Robin beginning to realize why they suck together, were the meatiest of the season. Those stories mean something for the characters and for the audience. Of co...

'How I Met Your Mother' Recap: No Questions Asked Favors Called In

October 29th, 2013 9:00am EDT
How I Met Your Mother returned last night with “No Questions Asked.”  It isn’t Halloween time on HIMYM, but they managed to do a ghost themed episode anyways.   You may remember that in last season’s finale Marshall accepted a judgeship in New York without discussing it with Lily.  At the end of last week’s episode, Daphne texted Lily this news using Marshall’s phone.

Marshall calls in a favor, no questions asked, and asks Ted to delete the text from Lily’s phone.  Ted apparently owes Ted a “no questions asked” to Marshall for a time he unscrewed a mailbox that Ted was trapped inside.  Te...

'HIMYM' Recap: The Longest Weekend In History Continues With 'Knight Vision'

October 22nd, 2013 12:02pm EDT
How I Met Your Mother
How I Met Your Mother returned last night with “Knight Vision.”  The longest weekend in history picked back up at 9pm on Friday night.  Barney and Ted are at the bar at the inn discussing which girl Ted should go after.  Barney says that at a weekend wedding, who you talk to on Friday night sets the tone for the whole trip.  Barney picks out Ted’s top three prospects:  Sophia, Robin’s college roommate Cassie, daughter of Barney’s mom’s best friend, and Grace, one of Barney’s co-workers.  Barney says that he should choose Sophia, but Ted instead chooses Cassie.  In an Indiana Jones reference...

'How I Met Your Mother' Review: 'Knight Vision'

October 21st, 2013 10:14pm EDT
How I Met Your Mother
Ah, so HIMYM’s reached Friday night drinks—the fateful night when Ted needs to ‘lock down’ a hot babe for the weekend. Friday evening in the narrative should lead to a jump, soon, to Saturday morning. I mean, the characters will sleep, right? “Knight Vision” is like an inverse vision quest. The writers’ frame of reference is Indiana Jones. Ted’s looking for the holy grail, but he chose wrong Friday night; however, he actually chose wisely, but he doesn’t know that yet. Vision quests are a rite of passage in Native American cultures that lead one to his or her purpose through spiritual guida...

'How I Met Your Mother' Review: 'The Poker Game'

October 15th, 2013 7:20pm EDT
How I Met Your Mother
The Barney-Robin story revolved around a common conflict when two individuals marry: what of the families?

Barney's a mama's boy, and a loving brother, and so he's forced to figure out a conflict between his family and the woman he's going to spend the rest of his life with. Robin wants to be Barney's first concern. Barney's first concern is his family: his mother and his brother. The nonsense begins when James incessantly makes negative remarks about marriage. Robin's annoyed by the remarks. Barney, since he's the bride-groom, must also feel bothered. Robin's worried James' remarks may in...

'How I Met Your Mother' Recap: 'The Poker Game' Was Full Of Fun Call Backs

October 15th, 2013 8:21am EDT
How I Met Your Mother
How I Met Your Mother returned last night with “The Poker Game.”  The episode began with 48 hours to go before Barney and Robin’s wedding.  Last week left off with Ted throwing a “best man poker game” for Barney, and the game continued into this week’s show.

The poker game quickly devolved into a match between Robin and Barney’s immediate family.  Robin gets tired of hearing James trash marriage.  James and his husband were in the middle of a divorce, so he wasn’t real keen on the idea of his brother getting married at the moment.  James ends up losing his ring in a hand against Robin.  Wh...

'HIMYM' Review: 'The Broken Code' – Are Things Resolved?

October 8th, 2013 3:33pm EDT
How I Met Your Mother
How I Met Your Mother returned last night with “The Broken Code.”  Last week left off with Barney confronting Ted about holding hands with Robin when she was looking for her locket.  Ted shrugs it off as being no big deal, and Barney lets go of the subject.   Originally, Ted thinks he’s off the hook, but then Barney begins making Ted do a bunch of laborious “best man tasks.”  Eventually Ted sees through it and asks if it really is bothering Barney.

Meanwhile, Robin is confronting Lily about the bachelorette party she threw for her.  Apparently it ended up only being the two of them and Pat...

'How I Met Your Mother' Recap: 'The Broken Code'

October 8th, 2013 9:08am EDT
How I Met Your Mother
I think How I Met Your Mother retired the bro-code conceit. Neil Patrick Harris' charm made Barney a more lovable character than Barney should've been in the early seasons of the show. The incessant bro-code, stories, and gimmicks made Barney a typical sitcom sidekick character. Carter Bays and Craig Thomas have layered the character in recent seasons while trying to retain what made the character distinctive and memorable in the show's infancy.

"The Broken Code" seems like the first departure from the bro-code, but last season had an episode in which Barney resolved to win Robin's heart t...

'How I Met Your Mother' Recap: 'Last Time in New York' (9x03)

October 3rd, 2013 8:42pm EDT
How I Met Your Mother
Cute episode. Really cute. There was really only one big problem with it, but I'll get to that in a minute. The plot:

It's 52 hours before the wedding. Lily discovers a list that Ted has made of things to do before leaving New York. It includes things like saying goodbye to the Empire State Building (which Ted affectionately calls "Empy") and getting a drink with his favorite students. It also includes drinking one last scotch with Barney. They have been saving a very special Glen McKenna for the occasion.

As Lily tries to convince Ted to stay, we get a few flashbacks that show how Ted an...

Alyson Hannigan
Actress Alyson Hannigan marked her 10th wedding anniversary to husband Alexis Denisof by exchanging vows for a second time last month (Sep13).

The happy couple relived its 2003 wedding day by walking down the aisle again in Hawaii, but this time there were two extra special guests - their kids Satyana and Keeva.

The second ceremony came after Denisof proposed to the How I Met Your Mother star again over the su...

'HIMYM' Season 9 Episode 2: Last Season Will Be A Grind And Challenge

October 1st, 2013 8:13pm EDT
How I Met Your Mother
Well, the good feelings about last week's two episode premiere are gone.

The final season's longest wedding weekend ever is still in the early stages. "Last Time in New York" showed the drawbacks of the season's structure. The elderly relatives of the family arrived at the Farhampton Inn. Barney and Robin feared marriage would mean the end of sex in their relationship. The soon-to-be-married couple dashed around the Inn looking for a room while avoiding their elderly relatives, because their relatives are old and slow and prone to chewing one's ear off. HIMYM models the elderly after zombi...

'How I Met Your Mother' Recap: 'Last Time In New York'

October 1st, 2013 8:19am EDT
HIMYM - Last Time In New York
How I Met Your Mother returned Monday night with “Last Time in New York.”  The third episode in the final season picked up Friday at 2pm, 52 hours before Barney and Robin’s wedding. Marshall is driving cross country since his flight was canceled. Barney and Robin are freaking out about whether their flame will die out after getting married.  But this episode was really the story of Ted and Lily sitting down to have a serious talk.

Marshall, Marvin, and fellow weary traveler Shelly were forced to rent a car and drive from Minnesota to New York after a storm shut down the airport.  If that w...

Premiere Recap: 'How I Met Your Mother' Returns For Final Season

September 24th, 2013 2:15pm EDT
How I Met Your Mother Season 9 Premiere
How I Met Your Mother premiered its final season last night.  I was saying the same thing a year ago, but then CBS negotiated for a ninth and final season to be made.  Season 9 will be the story of the weekend of Barney and Robin’s wedding, which of course will culminate in Ted finally meeting the mother.  Ted is still a couple days away from meeting her, but we got to see her for the first time in the final scene of season eight.  She is the bass player in the band for the wedding, and is played by Cristin Milioti.

Season nine picks up at 11am on Friday morning, 55 hours before the weddi...

'How I Met Your Mother' Premiere: Season 9 Feels Fresh But Has Its Challenges

September 24th, 2013 8:31am EDT
Future Ted and 'The Mother'
Carter Bays and Craig Thomas have annoyed me for the last four years as show runners and head writers of How I Met Your Mother. A once clever series devolved into a convoluted mess with each renewal and 24 episode cycle. The characters, once lovable, became increasingly loathsome. The structure of the series, a mix of flash-backs and flash-forwards woven in with the present, allowed for really creative storytelling in the early seasons, but the structure became a crutch for the series. The storytelling got lazier, and the characters were broad caricatures of what they once were. I've enjoye...

Top 5 Things You Need to Know Going Into Season 9 Of 'How I Met Your Mother'

September 22nd, 2013 3:00pm EDT
How I Met Your Mother
How I Met Your Mother is returning this Monday for its ninth and final season.  I'm pretty sure it's for real this time.  You may remember that season eight was reportedly going to be the final season, but since ratings were at all time highs, CBS went into negotiations with show creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas to do another season.  All of the actors' contracts were up at the end of season 8, and it appeared that Jason Segel, who said he wanted to focus on his movie career, was the biggest roadblock.  As soon as Segel signed on, everything else fell into place.  Whether you've missed...

Cristin Milioti as The Mother
If you have no idea what "How I Met Your Mother" is, than I don't blame you. Honestly, I didn't even know up until a couple of years ago. But, even though you do not know, you might want to give the show a try. And to the fans, a simple kuddos to you for keeping up.

Why am I trying to get you addicted to HIMYM? Well, because the show is about to end. What perfect time to get hooked, right? Also, the entire show was based on one secret. No show has kept a secret lasting for eight seasons. That secret was revealed in the last season closer. What was the big revelation? Newcomer Cristin Milio...

2013 Fall TV Preview: The Returning Shows On The CW & CBS

September 4th, 2013 6:00pm EDT
The CW and CBS are complete opposites. The CW shouldn't be in business, and CBS is THE business. The CW aims for teenagers to lose their sh!t on social media. CBS aims for the median age of the people in my office. I've never understood the Blue Bloods audience more than in the last year. My interest in The CW is odd and possibly unhealthy. I'm endlessly fascinated with its shows and attractive actors. I'll watch Reign just for Adelaide Kane. I'm not endlessly fascinated by CBS. CBS lulls me to sleep. I never wrote about Elementary's "Pilot" because I went to sleep mid-episode. I never watc...

Neil Patrick Harris outraged at N-word accusations

June 10th, 2013 8:51pm EDT
Neil Patrick Harris
Neil Patrick Harris has vehemently denied accusations he used a racial slur during his onstage performance with former boxing champion Mike Tyson at the Tony Awards on Sunday (09Jun13).

Online outlets, including Britain's Daily Mail Online, suggested the How I Met Your Mother star, who was hosting Broadway's most anticipated awards ceremony for the fourth time, uttered the N-word when Tyson appeared on stage during the show's opening number.

However the actor clearly said "bigger" during the televised performance, during which he repeatedly promised a "bigger Tony show", and he has hit ou...

'How I Met Your Mother' Finale Reveals Cristin Milioti As 'The Mother'

May 14th, 2013 8:40am EDT
cristin milioti
HIMYM wrapped up their eighth season Monday night.  A year ago we thought this would be the series finale, and we would finally meet the mother of Ted’s future children.  A few months ago it was revealed that HIMYM would be coming back for a ninth and final season.  The moment of Ted meeting his soulmate would have to wait, but the season finale was chock full of big moments that did not disappoint.

The episode began with Marshall and Lily packing for Italy.  Lily picks up the phone and it is Judy, Marshall’s mom.  It turns out that Marshall had still not told his mother about the move, an...

'How I Met Your Mother' Recap: 'Something Old' – Is Robin Freaking Out?

May 8th, 2013 9:14am EDT
cobie smulders
HIMYM returned last night with “Something Old,” the tale of Robin searching for something she supposedly buried in Central Park when she was a kid.  While on vacation with her father, she decided to leave an old bracelet in a box and told herself that if she ever got married she would come back and find it to use it as her something old at the wedding.

Robin tries to subtly tell Barney that she wants him to help her, but he doesn’t pick up on it.  Instead he goes to have some bonding time with Mr. Scherbatsky.  It turns out they are actually getting along quite well, and Barney decides to...

'How I Met Your Mother' Recap: Barney's 'Bro-Mitzvah'

April 30th, 2013 8:40am EDT
bro mitzvah
HIMYM returned to tell the legendary story of Barney’s bachelor party.  The day began with Robin asking Barney to drop off a payment with the wedding planner while she goes to have dinner with Barney’s mother.  Robin had been apprehensive about the dinner, and makes Barney promise not to leave her alone with her for too long.  However, when Barney goes off to make the payment, he is kidnapped.

Barney shouts out, “I swear I never talked to the North Koreans!”  Ted and Marshall laugh, for it is they who have kidnapped Barney to take him to his surprise bachelor party.  Barney calls Robin to ...

'HIMYM' Recap: Back After Short Hiatus With 'Romeward Bound'

April 16th, 2013 2:43pm EDT
How I Met Your Mother
'How I Met Your Mother' returned last night after a short hiatus due to the NCAA tournament.  It came back with a quick shocker.  The Captain calls Lily and tells her that he is moving to Rome for a year and that he wants her to come with him.  Lily took the job as the Captain’s art consultant a few weeks ago.  She is immediately torn.  When she calls Marshall to talk about it, he talks about how he is swamped at work.  She decides that she can’t rip Marshall away from his dream job and turns down the Captain’s offer.

Meanwhile, Ted and Barney are at the bar.  Barney was just about to leav...

'HIMYM' Recap: 'The Time Travelers' Gives Us Some Great Moments

March 26th, 2013 9:50am EDT
time travelers
I wish every episode of HIMYM was written by the show co-creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas.  Whenever they are the lead writers, it shows in the script. They gave us another gem last night with, “The Time Travelers.”  It was the 52nd episode that the pair have been credited with since it all started with a fledgling pilot of a show with a strange name and a cast of nobodies and aging child stars.  Back then, Ted was searching for the one.  Nearly eight years later, he was getting close, but still felt so far from finding her.

Instead of being out on a date, Ted is down at the bar argui...

'How I Met Your Mother' Recap: 'The Fortress'

March 19th, 2013 3:01pm EDT
HIMYM: The Fortress
HIMYM returned from a short hiatus last night with “The Fortress,” referring to Barney’s swinging bachelor pad.  With season nine now a done deal, all storylines are now fast forwarded to a year from now, spring 2014. In this one, Robin pressures Barney to finally let go of the Fortress of Barnitude. Barney is hesitant.

With Lily now working as the Captain’s art consultant, Marshall has been stuck with more than his fair share of Marvin duties. Marshall says that they haven’t been intimate in weeks, and that she hasn’t even had time to sit down and watch their favorite show, Woodworthy Man...

'How I Met Your Mother' Recap: 'The Ashtray'

February 19th, 2013 7:13pm EST
the ashtray
HIMYM returned with an all new episode Monday night.  Earlier this month, CBS finally confirmed what we had all suspected that the show had been picked up for a ninth and final season.  Over the last couple of weeks, it has become clear that we will in fact not be meeting the mother this spring, as was originally expected.  I am excited for more episodes, but have to admit that I am a bit disappointed that we have to wait even longer for the big moment.

The episode began with the Captain leaving a message for Ted.  The Captain (Kyle MacLachlan) was Ted’s ex-girlfriend Zoey’s ex-husband, an...
