Richard Dawson Diagnosed With Cancer Only Three Weeks Ago

The Hogan's Hero star and beloved host of Family Feud Richard Dawson was diagnosed with cancer just three weeks ago according to his family. Dawson died in Los Angeles from complications of esophageal cancer just a few days ago.

His son Gary - from the presenter's marriage to British bombshell Diana Dors - reveals his dad only learned he was battling the disease shortly before his passing, after seeking help from doctors for what he thought was heartburn.

Dawson's first radiation treatment didn't go smoothly and he suffered a heart attack during the session.

Former Hogan's Heroes and Family Feud host Richard Dawson has died at the age of 79.

Gary Dawson, son of the man who became famous for kissing the hands of thousands of women on Feud, posted a confirmation of his father's passing on his facebook page Saturday evening, according to TMZ.com.

"It is with a very heavy heart that I inform you that my father passed away this evening from complications due to esophageal cancer. He was surrounded by his family. He was an amazing talent, a loving husband, a great dad, and a doting grandfather. He will be missed but always remembered," he writes.

Often we don’t realize that our favorite TV shows began as vehicles on the big screen. Many of television’s best programs started that way. Then again, so did some of the worst.

In 1974, Ellen Burstyn starred in the Oscar awarded Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore. The movie was such a success that it was turned into “Alice,” complete with Vic Tayback as Mel. Unfortunately, it was Polly Holiday who made the sitcom a success. By the time she left the show and was replaced in 1980 by the original Flo, Diane Ladd, the damage had already been done.
