Six Months Ago
The clock is turned back to see all the of the Heroes six months prior. Mohinder's father, Chandra Suresh, arrives in New York to begin his quest to find individuals with extraordinary abilities, and meets the man who would become Sylar, all too eager to be special. Peter celebrates his graduation from nursing school, and learns that Nathan plans to prosecute a case that could mean trouble for the entire Petrelli family as it involves testifying against their own father. A surprise visit from her estranged father brings out the worst in Niki. Hiro attempts to be a hero, using his powers to go back and save the life of his new freind who is murdered in present day. Claire joins the cheerleading squad and makes a curious discovery when a deep wound on her hand heals too quickly. H.R.G. and the Haitian meet Eden and attempt to rehabilitate her devious ways to work for him.
With the election and NYC's destruction looming, Nathan has a disturbing face-to-face meeting with the shadowy Linderman. After Niki breaks free of Jessica's influence before she can kill him, he conspires with her to kill Linderman. Upon the confrontation, Linderman makes an offer that will essentially make Nathan's dreams come true. Hiro's attempt to steal the sword steers him into a grim new direction. Suresh makes a breakthrough on "the list" as he realizes he has been working with Sylar all the time and leading him to his victims. He nearly manages to kill Sylar but he breaks free and attacks Suresh. As Peter comes to find Suresh, he is confronted by Sylar who has Suresh battered, bloody, and pinned to the ceiling. Sylar begins to cut Peter's head open, but the results remain to be seen. D.L. realizes that Niki has been taken over by Jessica. Isaac paints his most terrible painting yet. New "hero" and illusion caster, Candice Wilmer, makes an illusive debut by tricking HRG into thinking she's his wife and he reveals his plans to take down the company leaving his fate in question.
The tragic events in Texas have sad, serious repercussions for many of the heroes, their families and friends. Claire's dad wipes the memories of anyone who has knowledge of her abilties, including her brother and freind. Peter is questioned on the incident in jail and is visibly ill. Nathan gets him out of jail and he collapses having a vision where the source of the future explosion is him. Issac's newest painting has fascinating future implications for Hiro who is shown facing a dinosaur with a sword. Suresh takes the first steps along his new path after unlocking is father's list. Matt and F.B.I. Agent Audrey Hanson pursue a break in the Sylar case revolving around HRG and the Haitian. Horrified by Jessica's recent actions, Niki turns herself in to protect her family. Sylar breaks out of jail after killing Eden.
The Hard Part
Now knowing what is at stake if they fail in their mission, Hiro and Ando's determination to save the world is put to the test. Hiro finds Sylar after finding Isaac's dead body at his hands. Hiro and Ando follow him to his mother's home, as his own prediction of being the exploding man shakes him to his core as mass murder doesn't make sense to his goals. When his mother rejects his attempt to be normal, he demonstrates his power, scaring her and accidentally killing her in a scuffle. Hiro takes the opportunity to kill him, but fails, making a narrow escape. Reluctantly committed to the path, Nathan takes some surprising steps to guarantee his election and he discovers his mother is deeply involved in Linderman's plans. In attempting to rescue Micah from Linderman, Jessica and D.L. learn how they have been observed by Linderman and part of his master plan since they were young. Thompson brings a reluctant Mohinder into his company's fold and introduces him to Molly, the young girl Matt found when he first discovered his own power, which he must save from a disease if she is to stop Sylar. And HRG, Matt and Ted go to Linderman's building to destroy their tracking device and end up bumping into Peter and Claire. Peter's close proximity to Ted initiates the absorption of his radioactive powers, pushing him further toward the destruction of New York.
Poised to become a member of Congress and maybe more, Nathan weighs sacrificing Peter and perhaps Claire to ensure Linderman's prophecy, as his mother pushes him forward. As Hiro prepares to face Sylar to the death, he learns of his lineage from his father who trains him the art of using the sword to meet his destiny. While various "heroes" fatefully arrive in New York City, Peter and Ted attempt to leave the city before the foretold explosion. Unfortunately, Sylar intervenes and ends up killing Ted and taking his powers. H.R.G. and Matt learn the tracking system is actually Molly, the little girl Matt helped after Sylar killed her parents, whose power can find anyone she thinks about. Mohinder is trying to save her from a disease and discovers his own blood contains antibodies that can save her life.
How to Stop an Exploding Man
With Isaac's horrible predictions unfolding before them, the everyday people with extraordinary abilities face moments of pain and peril in Kirby Plaza with unflinching heroism. As Niki tries to help the mortally wounded DL, she realizes she can't save themselves and Micah so Jessica relinquishes herself to Niki giving her the power to help them get away. Meanwhile Matt and Bennet change course when they realize Molly is the tracking system. They escape the building with Mohinder as Molly reveals Sylar is close at hand. After a fateful dream-like encounter with Simone's dad, Peter and Claire head back to Kirby Plaza as they know Peter is the only one who can stop Sylar. And Hiro, with newfound confidence, heads to the Plaza to take on Sylar too. As they arrive at the same point, Peter realizes he is the one who will explode because he can't control the powers. Matt shoots at Sylar but his bullets are reflected back into him, leaving his fate in doubt. Hiro delivers the final blow to Sylar but Sylar's last effort send Hiro flying, only to teleport away at the last second. Peter is near critical and Claire can't shoot him. But Nathan arrives at the last second, in a sudden change of heart, and flies them both away to explode in the sky, seemingly making the ultimate sacrifice. As the danger seems averted, Sylar apparently escapes, once again defying death. And Hiro finally lands, having transported himself hundreds of years in the past, in feudal Japan, in between an army and his ancient ancestor preparing for battle, setting the scene for next season.
Five Years Gone
We are thrown five years in the future, the fifth anniversary of the New York explosion. Hiro and Ando meet Future Hiro. They discover that people with extraordinary abilities are not only widely known about but are being registered, imprisoned, hunted and even killed as "terrorists." Matt is the head of Homeland Security. Peter and Nikki are a couple. Nathan Petrelli is President. Bennet is trying to help people with harmless special abilities get new identities, including Claire. But Claire is found and brought to President Petrelli. Claire is furious with him for making people afraid of those with special abilities. He says that he's met a lot of special people, including Candice who allowed him to become president. He begins to remove her scalp, revealing that he's really Sylar! With the help of Mohinder, who can't bring himself to exterminate Hiro and lets him go, Hiro and Ando are able to teleport back to their own time, just as Future Hiro is killed by Matt, while Peter and Sylar battle.
Chased by unknown assailants, Hiro's search for the sword takes a turn when his father appears. A cleaned-up Isaac dedicates himself to stopping New York's destruction -- and Peter. Claude, an invisible man with a mysterious past, might have something to teach a would-be hero. D.L. struggles with new family responsibilities as Matt opens up to his wife Janice. H.R.G. focuses on his murderous captive, Sylar. Meanwhile, after seeking out the Haitian, Claire secretly embarks on a search for her true birth parents. While working to find those on "the list," Suresh receives a surprising visitor.
Matt enters the private security business and receives an objectionable client, marked for a hit by Linderman. Still indebted to Linderman, Jessica is hired to kill Matt's client and they come face to face which costs Matt his client and nearly his own life. Suresh finds another person on the list by Sylar gets there first and impersonates the guy, fooling Suresh into taking him on the journey. As her home-life worsens, Claire strives to learn more about her dad but her birth mother runs interference as extorting money from Nathan is her primary goal. Nathan clearly feels guilty about having a daughter but relents and pays up, while Claire watches in secret. Hiro and Ando get sidetracked in Vegas again while searching for the sword.
One Giant Leap
Claire tries to maintain a normal social life when a romance with the football quarterback takes a tragic turn. While Hiro convinces his friend that they are destined to travel to America to save the world, a frightened Niki follows instructions from a mysterious, unknown source that directs her to the middle of the desert. Meanwhile, Nathan uses Peter's accident to propel his political campaign. The elusive Sylar is being hunted by both Matt and the FBI, as well as Suresh, whose father's journal leads to potential clues.
As H.R.G. tries to protect his daughter by any means, Claire's high school Homecoming celebration turns into a frightening night for many. Nathan and Simone work together to find Isaac's painting for Peter, but this key to the future could lead to tragedy. Meanwhile, Hiro travels back in time to right an upsetting wrong. As Niki puts a goal in sight, Micah spends time with his dad. Still experiencing strange dreams while in India, Suresh learns of a boy that might pull him back into his father's research.
Seven Minutes to Midnight
Back in India to mourn the passing of his father, Suresh has mysteriously vivid dreams of his father's past that force him to question what path to take next, especially when he encounters a young boy who appears in the dreams and his waking life. Continuing their journey to New York, Hiro and Ando stop at a diner and meet a waitress who appears to have memory powers who takes as hine to Hiro. Little do they know that Sylar is stalking her and makes her his next victim. Hiro goes back in time to save her life but never returns to the present as he promised. A single picture on the wall indicates he may have stayed in the past for some time. In crisis, Niki calls Nathan and begs for help getting Micah back. Determined to see one of Isaac's paintings which holds the key to the future, Peter asks Nathan for help in obtaining it. Intent on getting back to her normal life, Claire focuses on Homecoming preparations, unaware of what's to come. Meanwhile, H.R.G. and Eden focus their attentions on Isaac, who they helped kick his drug habit. When he is unable to paint the future without drugs, H.R.G. makes Eden get him back on heroin as time is running short for Claire.
After they are attacked by HRG and the Haitian, Peter makes a daring escape. Peter learns that he and Claude were betrayed by Isaac and confronts him. A scuffle ensues and Simone gets shot in the process. Matt's reunited with the radioactive Ted Sprague and Hana Gitelman a woman with "wireless" mental abilities when they recruit him to confront HRG. They end up taking the whole family hostage in their house. After rescuing Ando, Hiro makes a tough choice about his mission when he sends Ando back home to continue his mission alone, worried that more people he cares about will get hurt. After her moms condition worsens, Claire can no longer hold back her anger towards her father. Mohinder and Sylar meet a woman with powers who is interested in what Mohinder has to say but Sylar ends up murdering her.
Hiro and his buddy embark on their heroic journey to New York, when they are stopped by the Vegas high-roller they cheated who offers them a deal they can't refuse. He brings them in to cheat on a game to make back the money they swindled. When Ando realizes they are in danger, he pulls Hiro into the bathroom and tries to get him to teleport them out. The game is broken up by a mysterious figure, who is later revealed to be Niki, who rips the other gamblers apart, killing them all. Claire's father sets up a meeting with her biological parents and she hopes that questions about her new-found indestructibility can be answered. Its turns out they are hired by him to act the roles and put her off track about the truth. Meanwhile, Isaac receives another confusing call from Hiro, but Peter is there to pick up the phone and relay a life-saving message. Suresh bids farewell to Eden as he heads back to India to bury his father as Eden reveals she also works for H.R.G and his next target is Isaac. Niki's husband D.L, returns looking to clear his name. But Niki's dark side surfaces and reavleasl she was responsible for framing D.L in the first place, killing anyone who could clear his name and hiding the money in the house. When D.L. discovers he was betrayed, he fights dark Niki, and his ability to pass through objects enables him to get the upper hand and he takes the money and Micah and runs.
Sylar's rampage continues as Suresh and Peter battle the powerful serial killer, ending with Peter seemingly killed. Suresh takes him to his mother's house where Claire manages to revive him knowing he has her powers. Sylar makes his way to Isaac's apartment where he murders him just as Hiro's journey and his own paintings have predicted. Nathan weighs on what he has learned from Linderman about allowing Peter to explode and kill millions in order to become president and fulfill a greater destiny at a very high cost to him personally and morally. As Thompson uses every tool at his disposal to find Claire, Linderman drafts Micah into his far-reaching plans. HRG escapes with the help of Matt and Ted. Meanwhile, Hiro's resolve to "save the world" strengthens in the face of a grim reality as he and Ando end up five years in the future where New York has been devastated by the explosion indicating that Hiro fails his mission.
Hiro struggles to make his father, a corporate tycoon, and ambitious sister understand his new heroic path in life. Niki is released form prison to be with D.L and Micah again, but Jessica manages to take over upon release unbeknownst to them. Claude attempts to teach Peter to harness his abilities, but the process could shatter Peter's faith in those closest to him. Determined to find her birth mother, Claire makes her way to a trailer park in Texas. Meanwhile, Sylar makes a move against H.R.G. and imprisons him, freeing Sylar to go after Claire. He ends up nearly killing her mom instead before H.R.G. can intervene. Also, Matt is suspended from the force when he recants information he made in a report.
Nothing to Hide
Distraught over Micah being taken away, Niki reveals her recent personal struggles to a friend. She ends up welcoming her dark side to bring Micah back by going after D.L. Pushing aside his own issues at home, Matt assists Audrey's investigation into another bizarre murder, but their pursuit of serial killer Sylar leads to another mysterious figure with radioactive powers. After failing to act like a "superhero" when faced with danger, Hiro questions his heroism. Nathan and his wife Heidi think about how to win the congressional election. Claire is shocked to learn that her brother found her tape and now knows her secret. Meanwhile, her father is disturbed by news from one of his associates.
Suresh is confronted by Peter who wants his help in explaining the powers he seems to possess. He decides to prove it via Isaac who is in the midst of trying to save the world through his painting to avoid the nuclear explosion he predicted. In Las Vegas, Hiro's plan backfires when he turns time to his advantage at the gambling tables. Niki's mafia debtors use their leverage to have her seduce Nathan as he pays a personal visit to a wealthy Vegas contributor to raise additional campaign funds. Following the tragic turn at the bonfire, Claire's healing abilities are put to the test a she must heal from her own autopsy, but according to Isaac's paintings, her future could be even worse. She exacts revenge on Brody by crashing into a wall. Meanwhile, after being drugged and strapped to a lab table, Matt's abilities are gauged by a pair of men, led by Claire's dad, who seem to know a great deal about people with special gifts. Peter finds himself on a subway as time stops around him. He is confronted by an older, English-speaking Hiro who has come back in time to warn him of the future.
Picking up two weeks after recent events, Nathan's determination to save a comatose Peter forces him to turn to Simone for help. Isaac's puzzling "Hiro vs. T-Rex" painting inspires Hiro and Ando to search for the pictured samurai sword. Jessica struggles against Niki's decision to turn herself in to police. With his associate Eden dead and Matt on his heels, H.R.G. tries to focus on his orders regarding Sylar. After being offered a choice by the Haitian, Claire struggles with changes her decision has wrought. Taking up his father's quest, Suresh attempts to share information about who is "on the list" of people with special abilities and the threat to their lives. Meanwhile, a new hero makes a shocking debut.
Confused after losing track of another block of time, Niki finds the police on her doorstep, searching for her fugitive husband D.L. Hawkins. Claire confesses to her father. Hiro and his friend get jumped by some Vegas high-rollers. Peter receives a life-changing message from Hiro, who visits from the future warning him to "Save the cheerleader, save the world." Meanwhile, Matt secretly uses his mind-reading ability to anticipate his wife's needs. Dismayed by recent events, Suresh makes plans to return to India to lay both his father's remains and his research to rest.
Matt Parkman and Ted Sprague take HRG and his family hostage as they search for answers. More is revealed via flashbacks about Mr. Bennett, the agency for which he works, how he met Claude (his former partner) and the Haitian, and how he found Claire. It is revealed that Hiro's dad is at the top of the agency and was responsible for entrusting Claire to HRG, with the intent that if she manifested powers, he would hand her over. Parkman tries to keep the situation diffused as Ted becomes increasingly unstable. HRG makes Matt shoot Claire knowing she will live but hoping he can keep her hidden from the organization as all his secrets are blown wide open. HRG and Matt go to Primatech and get files for Ted, promising that they will explain everything. HRG's boss arrives, shoots Ted, who who starts to overload and inadvertently torches the house. Claire manages to tranquilize Ted, stopping his meltdown. HRG and the Haitian conspire to hide the truth from their superiors, forcing The Haitian and Claire to go underground while wiping HRG's memories and shooting him to make it look convincing.

Don't Look Back
Outside a crime scene, Los Angeles cop Matt Parkman is the only one who can hear the cries of a missing little girl. Claire almost reveals her secret ability to the entire school after learning that her injury attempt tape disappeared. Thinking she's going crazy, Niki loses another block of time after waking to find some murdered thugs in her garage, only to be confronted by Social Services about son Micah. While office drone Hiro investigates New York, Nathan confronts Peter following his plunge off a building.
