Five Ways 'Hawaii Five-0' Got Awesome Again

February 4th, 2013 2:30pm EST
hawaii five-0
It's not uncommon for television shows, especially one's that are incredibly popular in their first season, to experience a bit of a sophomore slump.  CBS's bikinis and bombshells remake of "Hawaii Five-0" experienced creative backslide in its second season after a blockbuster debut.  Thankfully, it wasn't a "Heroes"-esque decline and there have been major strides this season to regain the high-octane crime drama it once was.  Here are the five ways "Hawaii Five-0" got awesome again, and reattained its guilty-pleasure status.

It's not business, it's personal.  Like the classic action...

The holidays are over, and it’s time to look forward to several more frigid months of winter and paying off all those Christmas presents you couldn't afford.  Luckily, most television shows are gearing up for the second half of their 2012-2013 seasons.  My New Year’s resolution is to gather as many juicy spoilers as I could and share them with y’all.  It’s a lot easier than vowing to work off a month’s worth of double desserts.  First up, CBS’s procedural set in paradise, “Hawaii Five-0.”

The Top 10 TV Shows That Should Be Brought Back, Rebooted Or Just Re-Run

October 5th, 2012 3:07pm EDT
Miami Vice
TV remakes are either hit-or-miss, but with hollywood lacking many new ideas (seems like every other show is a crime drama or takes place in a hospital these days) we've thought of a few classic shows that we think would make the cut and stick around for a while -- if they're done correctly.

There are a number of old shows from the 70s and 80s that have been brought back in recent years, some with all new casts and edgier than their predecessors, and others featuring some of the original cast members. Others were revamped entirely, and some casting decisions killed a couple before they wer...

Taryn Manning on Her New Single, 'Hawaii Five-0' and Stereotyping

September 6th, 2012 10:30am EDT
Taryn Manning
Taryn Manning is secure in her identity. The singer, actress, dancer and fashion designer is busy with a variety of projects, but her strong personality shines through in everything that she pursues, including her recently released single "Send Me Your Love", her forthcoming album Freedom City, and her return to CBS's Hawaii Five-0.

"Send Me Your Love" is a dance anthem that features the DJ/producer duo of Sultan and Ned Shepard, but it boasts a much deeper lyrical meaning than your typical electronica tune. "This song's about my love story with faith and God," explained Taryn, who wrote...

TV Report Card: Grading 10 Season Finales

Season finales are essentially the Hollywood version of final exams. They have to shock and awe and entice viewers into returning after four arduous months of dead air. From births and deaths to break-ups and OMG-worthy shockers, I’m grading 10 season finales. The SPOILER ALERT is implied.

Reckoning, Revenge’s thrilling season ender saw Emily Thorne (Emily VanCamp) not only confront her father’s killer in a satisfying and strangely sweet final fight, but surrender to her feelings for ruggedly handsome bartender, Jack. It wouldn’t be “Revenge” without infuriating twists and double-c...

I once had dreams of becoming an Emmy-Winning actress, but thanks to a traumatizing audition for a middle school drama club and being roughly a few inches shy of Snooki-esque shortness, those dreams never panned out. 'Hawaii Five-0' Recap: 'I Helu Pu' (2.16)

February 14th, 2012 3:10am EST
Hawaii Five-O
Hawaii Five-0 does its damnedest to break its formula this week, but that doesn't invigorate the show as much as you might think. Quite the opposite: it actually does a little damage.

As we start, Lori Weston's got a lot of blood on her hands...literally. She walks out of the bathroom and we find out that she's in a hospital, asking after Steve and getting in trouble with Lieutenant Governor Denning for causing an international incident. Denning reminds us that he assigned her to this task force, so perhaps he'll end up reassigning her elsewhere.

Eighteen hours earlier, everything i...

After some reruns, Hawaii Five-0 finally brings us a new episode. This one involves a law enforcement officer who meets a bloody end in an airplane bathroom. Not the way I'd want to go out.

Upon arriving at the crime scene, Danny realizes that he knew the victim, U.S. Marshal Dave Collins. Chin reports that there are two missing passengers - the felon Dave was transporting, Sal Painter (that's Sons of Anarchy's Theo Rossi) and another man posing as Rick McGuire. After last week's underwhelming Hawaii Five-0, we finally find out who Shelburne is...and that's pretty much it.

We get a flashback to 1992, where Steve is having a talk with his father (William Sadler, if you forgot). Dad is sending Steve and Mary Ann back to the mainland. "It's not safe for you here anymore," he says. This doesn't go over well with teenage Steve, but present-day Steve totally gets it. And is totally following Joe, until he gets a call about a delivery truck being hit. What got stolen? Something that needed to be snuck past Customs.

The Five-0 team has to go to Sa...

This week's Hawaii Five-0 wins for "Most O's in an Episode Title." Unfortunately, that's about all it wins, as it's a rather lackluster return for a generally great show.

Who would hire a professional killer to off a teenage girl? That's the question of the week when Emily Winter is discovered deceased. Her father (Clayton Norcross) has no idea why his daughter would be targeted, but tells Steve that she stole a check from him and wrote it out for five thousand dollars. We discover that this was in order to help her friend Karen (Courtney Coleman), who's being blackmailed over her...

TV bosses behind hit show Hawaii Five-O have apologized to American World War II veterans for filming an upcoming episode during their Pearl Harbor anniversary tribute last week.

Dozens of Pearl Harbor survivors and military officials congregated at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu last week to remember the lives lost during the Japanese attack on the Hawaiian naval base in 1941.

However, the group became enraged when a Hawaii Five-0 film crew neglected to alter its shooting schedule out of respect for the deceased and instead forged ahead with filming a scene in ...

We've come to Hawaii Five-0's fall finale, and it encapsulates the season to date: perhaps not remarkable, but watchable, and leaving us wondering where it's all going.

When a dead body (who later turns out to be quite alive) is found inside an abandoned bunker, it's up to our heroes to close the case and still make it to Chin's wedding. This involves live grenades, a perp dumpster diving, and a run-in with newly-promoted Captain Fryer (Tom Sizemore). The man they found is Fryer's prime suspect in the murder of Bridgett Turner. His wife (that's NYPD Blue's Gail O'Grady) has no idea...

When I was a kid, I never liked school buses. This week's Hawaii Five-0 reminds me of that feeling - although thankfully I was never kidnapped by a drug cartel.

Do you recognize the shooter from the opening teaser? You should. That's Aimee Garcia. She's currently also playing Jamie Batista on Dexter. Here she's working for a drug cartel that would like its cocaine back. Her co-conspirator is played by Rick Gomez, who just appeared on Burn Notice as a kidnap victim. They're just two of the many familiar faces that populate this action-packed episode.

This week's Hawaii Five-0 feels like a sweeps episode. Our hero held at gunpoint by a former friend and in need of rescue? Definite attention-getter. Thankfully, "Ki'ilua" doesn't stop there, keeping hold of us through the hour.

Before we get to that point, though, we must deal with the murder of investigative reporter Bethany Morris (Kaytlin Borgen), who gets yanked out from under her bed like Maggie Grace in Taken. The obvious question is "What was she working on that got her killed?" Seems Bethany was a whistleblower poking her nose around in corporate business. Nothing you have...

An admission: I love the Fast & Furious films. So give me Hawaii Five-0 taking after the Fast & Furious films, and I'm a happy girl.

The show opens big, with Honolulu Police cruisers trying to catch a speedy flame-red set of wheels and finding a whole host of beautiful cars inside locked shipping containers. One of them has a dead body sans fingerprints in the trunk. This allows us to use Hawaii's car culture as the episode's backdrop. (It also means Lauren German gets primped as if she's trying to channel Michelle Rodriguez - if Rodriguez's Letty had driven a bait car.) There are ...

That is, when they're not watching B-movies in Danny's new dive of an apartment. In all honesty, I think Scott Caan and Alex O'Loughlin would do great if Mystery Science Theater 3000 ever came back. Their banter belongs on a Rifftrax.

Dear Television: please stop feeling compelled to do 'theme' episodes for holidays.

Rarely are holiday-related episodes that good; most of them don't have much substance to them beyond the gimmick of whatever special date they're centered around. (A rare exception was NBC's Life, which had a second season episode entitled "Black Friday," but that episode was good because it was well-written and acted, not necessarily because of any particular festive addition.) This week's Hawaii Five-0 started by evoking reminders of The Blair Witch Project and didn't really improve from there.

Last week’s episode left me unfulfilled as Dean hadn't shared his secret, and instead chose to try to bury his head in the sand and his liver in alcohol. The number-one question I've heard all season when it comes to Hawaii Five-0 has been, "What's happening with Kono?" Well, tonight we finally got that train leaving the station. Would that be enough?

When a beloved college volleyball coach (Joe Toro) gets killed in his own locker room, Five-0 is on the case. The coach was living in the guest house of an affluent couple, Karl and Trisha Joyner (Rob Duval and Meredith Monroe), which gives Danny room to gripe about being underpaid and over-shot at.
