To avoid her friends' sympathies after breaking her engagement to Max, Lorelai (Lauren Graham) embarks upon a road trip with daughter Rory (Alexis Bledel). After a disastrous sojourn at an out-of-the-way bed & breakfast, the ladies end up at Harvard, where college-bound Rory experiences feelings previously unknown to her. Upon their return, Lorelai makes an important decision which may affect the future of her relationship with Luke (Scott Patterson).
