Oversleeping on the day that her daughter, Rory (Alexis Bledel), is to enter the prestigious Chilton Prep School, Lorelai (Lauren Graham) hastily slaps together a "wardrobe" that proves most embarrassing. Things get worse when Lorelai is summoned to the principal's office where she faces a showdown with her own mother, Emily (Kelly Bishop). Meanwhile, Rory has problems of her own with an extremely daunting classload and a whole passel of snobbish classmates -- foremost among them the redoubtable Paris Geller (Liza Weil), editor of the school newspaper.
