50 Years Later, 'The Dick Van Dyke Show' Still Holds Up

September 19th, 2011 8:18pm EDT
'The Dick Van Dyke Show'
It’s almost impossible to believe, but it’s true: ‘The Dick Van Dyke Show’ premiered on CBS 50 years ago next month. Yes, it was half a century ago that America was first introduced to the Petries’ living room and the office of Alan Brady’s writing staff.

What’s even more amazing is that the show still holds up better than ever. ‘The Dick Van Dyke Show’ was one of the first sitcoms to depict a husband and wife who actually had the hots for each other – even though they supposedly slept in separate beds. (It was obvious that wasn’t always the case. I mean, they had a kid and everything.)...

Mary Tyler Moore To Receive SAG Life Achievement Award

September 9th, 2011 10:25am EDT
Mary Tyler Moore
Mary Tyler Moore will receive SAG’s Life Achievement Award at the awards ceremony in January 2012.  The actress, who will turn 75 in December, is of course being honored for her unforgettable TV work in ‘The Dick Van Dyke Show’ and her own self-titled sitcom.

SAG is also said to be impressed by her film roles, her work on Broadway, and her humanitarian efforts.  Moore suffers from Type 1 Diabetes, a condition that has left her health fragile.  She frequently speaks about the disease, lobbies for more research and funds, and wrote a book about her experiences with it in 2009.

For the most ...

'Dick Van Dyke' Writer Sem Denoff Dies At 83

July 11th, 2011 5:34pm EDT
Dick Van Dyke
Sam Denoff, a prolific TV writer who won two Emmys for 'The Dick Van Dyke Show' and who created 'That Girl,' has died at age 83. He had reportedly suffered from Alzheimer's Disease.

Denoff started in TV writing for shows like 'Your Show of Shows' and 'McHale's Navy' before he struck gold with writing partner Bill Persky. Carl Reiner recruited them to write for Van Dyke's show, and the pair became favorites in the latter half of the show's run. They won an Emmy in 1964 for various episodes, and in 1966 were nominated for two episodes: They won for the classic 'Coast to Coast Big Mouth' e...

And The Best TV Christmas Episodes Ever Include...

December 17th, 2010 12:20pm EST
The Office
It’s quite hard to narrow down the best TV Christmas episodes ever. To help accommodate this dilemma, I am limiting myself to three classic TV specials – cartoons, variety shows, what have you. The rest will be regular TV segments from some of your favorite series. Here, in my opinion, are my favorite Christmas episodes of all time. Are they the best? Not necessarily. With a certain degree of schmaltz, you can’t always expect the best. In descending order:

10. ‘The Office’ – ‘Christmas Party’ – Dec. 6, 2005

This series’ first Christmas episode features the “Yankee swap” in which Mi...

TV DVD Spring Cleaning: How Do You Decide What DVDs To Purge?

March 13th, 2010 9:11am EST
Seinfeld
For those of you too young to remember what it was like to have a video collection in the pre-digital days of VHS, lemme tell ya… It was a pain in the butt. Bulky, inconvenient plastic blocks of ridiculously fragile tape that usually held a mere two hours took up tons of shelf space and took forever to navigate. And if you wanted to own a TV show on video, the few that were commercially available would clear your bank account and fill an entire media room!

And then came DVDs. Squishing all those ones and zeroes into small, manageable, resilient discs made the concept of a video library fa...

The Ten Greatest Of The Decade: TV Shows

December 14th, 2009 9:30am EST
Best TV Of The Decade
As the decade reaches its conclusion, you'll undoubtedly come across many lists. Lists that purport to tell you the best, the top, the cream of the decade as they relate to pop culture. You're also certain to come across many lists that claim to rank the "greatest" of the ten year period from 2000-2009. But what does that really mean?

"Greatest" should be something entirely different from what we usually associate with these lists. Mostly, these lists claim to rank the best - something that is only truly possible were a listmaker to, say, see every single movie in a given decade. If...

The Most Underrated & Overrated Influential TV Shows

August 22nd, 2008 9:28am EDT
Miami Vice
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and on television it often appears to be the only form of creativity. Yes, ever since Milton Berle first stole a joke for "Texaco Star Theatre", TV has been a wild west of borrowing material and copying good ideas until they've become completely stale. Many of these ideas were so good, in fact, that their resonance is still felt today, and that's when a show crosses over from being copied to being influential.

Over the years, many shows have been considered influential. From "The Dick Van Dyke Show" first showing both the home and office l...

Actor Drake Bell To Release Major Label Debut, "It's Only Time," Dec. 5

Drake Bell
"Live how you want to live/If you wanna be free." "Do What You Want"

For a 20-year-old, Drake Bell is an old soul when it comes to the music he listens to and plays on his Universal Motown Records debut It's Only Time.

Songs like the first single, "I Know," which sounds like it could have come off Rubber Soul, and the empowering, Elton John-like rocker "Do What You Want" boast a bittersweet pop sound, with catchy harmonies and plenty of exuberant vocal hooks, which is no wonder considering the Newport Beach, CA, native, whose mother is two-time world champion pool player Robin Do...
