Yvonne Strahovski Joins 'Dexter' In New Season

June 13th, 2012 10:34am EDT
Yvonne Strahovski
On the one hand, I really didn’t love the last season of Dexter. On the other hand, I loved the ending enough that I want to see how they pulled it off.

And now, with the announcement of Yvonne Strahovski joining for a multi-episode story arc, I’m definitely on board.

She proved on Chuck that she can be funny or dramatic depending on the scene, so I can’t wait to see her tackle a role so very, very different from Sarah Walker.

According to reports, she’ll play Hannah McKay who is noted as “a strong, independent woman with a past that she’s struggled to put behind her.” She’ll work at Mia...

Q&A: Meet 'Gone' Star Sam Upton

February 25th, 2012 10:00am EST
Sam Upton
If you catch the new Amanda Seyfried thriller Gone this weekend, you'll catch another interesting actor: Sam Upton. Who is he? An incredibly versatile player.

In Gone, Upton plays McKay, one of the police officers that Jill (Seyfried) turns to in order to catch the serial killer who once came after her and has now targeted her sister. The flick has a cast of names that TV buffs will adore, from Dexter star Jennifer Carpenter to Justified boss Nick Searcy, but don't overlook the affable Upton, who recently chatted with me about the film and the many other interests he has.

Let's start at t...

Jennifer Carpenter , Michael C. Hall-TSB-007751.jpg
Dexter actor Michael C. Hall has sparked rumors of a reconciliation with his ex-wife Jennifer Carpenter after the co-stars were spotted walking arm-in-arm in California on Wednesday.

The couple's divorce was finalized in December, a year after Carpenter moved to end her two-year marriage, but now it appears the former lovers have reignited the spark in their relationship - they were snapped enjoying a romantic stroll along Venice Beach and cuddling on a bench.

The reunion won't come as too much of a surprise for fans - last year, Carpenter insisted there was no love lost between the coupl...

Q&A: 'Justified's' Erica Tazel - A Star On And Off-Screen

February 7th, 2012 4:50pm EST
Justified
Timothy Olyphant might be the star of FX's Justified, but he's far from the only one. Actress Erica Tazel has made the most out of her first series regular role as the no-nonsense Rachel Brooks.

From the pilot episode, Rachel has proven an effective balance to Raylan's more outside-the-lines approach, and we've seen their relationship grow along with her character. One of the highlights of season two came in "For Blood or Money" where we got to learn a lot more about Rachel, who has become one of Justified's most pleasant surprises, and that's because it's obvious how much thought a...

TV Book Club: Elmore Leonard's 'Raylan'

January 24th, 2012 3:15pm EST
Raylan
It's fitting that day-and-date with his TV reprise, U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens made a triumphant return to print.

Devoted fans of FX's Justified will know that the show's unique hero (so pitch-perfectly played by Timothy Olyphant) has his roots in a short story and a pair of novels. Ironically, it's the TV show we have to thank for Elmore Leonard's new novel Raylan, according to Justified showrunner Graham Yost.

At the recent Television Critics Association press tour, Yost (below left, with Leonard and Olyphant) told reporters, "It started when [Leonard] was visiting the set in the fir...

Q&A: Sam Witwer Back For More 'Being Human'

Sam Witwer
You've got to keep your eye on Sam Witwer.

As the vampire Aidan on SyFy's Being Human, he could take a bite out of you if he wanted. But offscreen, the Battlestar Galactica veteran's wit as is sharp as his alter-ego's fangs. He's also a man of multiple talents, not only an actor but a musician.

As Being Human starts its second season on January 16, Sam sat down with me to discuss what's next for his character, what he's up to when the cameras aren't rolling, and if being a sci-fi success also allows him to be a fanboy.

"It's interesting," he said of coming back for a sophomore run. "We a...

'Dexter' Recap: 'Nebraska' (6.08)

November 13th, 2011 9:55pm EST
Dexter
After being visited by his dead brother last week, Dexter Morgan is a little messed up in this week's Dexter. Who could blame him? Plus, we take a step back to the fantastic fourth season...

If Brother Sam was the angel in Dexter's life, Brian (Christian Camargo) does a great job of being the devil on the other shoulder. "You don't turn the other cheek, you slice it," he reminds Dex, whose world is further rocked when Debra informs him that Arthur Mitchell's wife and daughter have been killed. She thinks it's the Trinity Killer striking again, but Dexter knows better. He suspects th...

This week's Dexter sees our hero make an important decision about his direction in life...while those around him continue to have no idea where they're headed.

Dex gets the news from Deb that Brother Sam has been shot, which forces him to abandon his stalking of Travis and makes him seriously angry. He quickly zeroes in on Leo Hernandez, a gang member who replaced the man Dex killed. He doesn't get a chance to exact justice, though, as Leo is shot and killed in a standoff with the cops.

All should be well, but Dexter finds himself not so convinced of Leo's guilt after all. The r...

The 10th Anniversary Of '24'

November 6th, 2011 3:17pm EST
24
How time flies: 10 years ago today, 24 premiered on FOX, and television - not to mention pop culture and the world - was never the same.

The action-drama series, created by La Femme Nikita bosses Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran, and starring Kiefer Sutherland as now-famous government agent Jack Bauer, was a groundbreaking piece of entertainment. It introduced the idea of a television series in real time (each episode was an hour in a day) and employed a distinctive visual style that included the widespread use of "boxes" to provide simultaneous glimpses at multiple storylines. Top 10 Creepiest Film & TV Serial Killers

Top Ten Creepiest Fictional Serial Killers
Factual serial killers are scary. The idea that someone might be out there, on a deserted road or lurking in an alleyway, waiting to murder you is a horrible, horrible thought. But let’s face it: most of the time it’s the serial killers who keep you up at night are the ones that live on your television screen.

We’ve all been there: A Criminal Minds marathon on A&E, a Law and Order binge on Netflix instant... sometimes fictional serial killers are the creepiest ones of all. As Halloween approaches, I’d like to catalogue the 10 creepiest fictional serial killers.

'Dexter' Recap: 'A Horse of a Different Color' (6.04)

October 23rd, 2011 9:08pm EDT
Dexter
If last week's Dexter was more of a standalone episode, this week's throws us right back into the season-long arc, inducing squirms and gasps in equal measure.

Dexter's decided to go to the baptism Brother Sam invited him to after all, even though the idea of religious faith goes right over his head. It's too bad that they don't have time to have a discussion, because it might've come in handy when Dex is called out to deal with the "wicked rodeo" we saw at the end of last week's episode. New guy Mike (Billy Brown) quickly points out to the Metro team that it has something to do w...

Dexter
Last week's Dexter gave us a good idea where season six is headed. This week, we see a little more - just enough to get me concerned about that direction - but you'll have to wait for the real surprises.

Dexter's got a bad feeling when a murdered prostitute reminds him of the modus operandi of a serial killer he once tracked. He's convinced that the now-elderly Walter Kenney (Ronny Cox) hasn't come to Miami just to retire. Getting close to Kenney is not a good time for Dex, who has to suffer through the man's horrible golf game and near-constant complaining. It's funny if only for th...

He might be a serial killer, but this week's Dexter left me wanting to hug Dexter Morgan - after all, he's just realized that he may be his son's worst enemy.

Harrison's getting older now, and Dexter is disturbed to find out that his son has picked up on some of his father's habits, making repeated references to "daddy's box" of blood slides. Having previously stated that he doesn't want to pass his Dark Passenger on to the tot, Dex makes a painful decision at episode's end: that he can no longer show his son his real nature, only the one that everyone else believes to be true.

When we last left the “Supernatural” universe, Sam and Dean were careening towards the Leviathan-infested hospital via ambulance—Sam was seizing with a head injury, Dean with bloodily broken leg, and Bobby presumed dead.

Slickly directed by series’ star Jensen Ackles, “The Girl Next Door” was thankfully easier on my fangirl heart. It began mere minutes after last week’s cliffhanger with the brothers arriving at Sioux Falls General. Dean, a fighter to the end, tried to climb off the gurney and find his brother. His doctor explained that Sam had “bashed his head quite seriously.” Forge...

Previewing 'Dexter' Season 6 With Jennifer Carpenter

Dexter
Dexter Morgan has sliced his way into a bloody niche on TV. As it begins its sixth season tonight, Showtime's Dexter can boast both critical acclaim and an audience that's enraptured by the life of Miami's most loved serial killer. Dexter's biggest supporter - and also the largest threat to his lethal secret - is his sister, homicide detective Debra Morgan.

The show might be called Dexter, but Deb has been my favorite character on the series. She might have a smart mouth, but beyond that, she has an earnestness to bust the bad guys that I find admirable. She also displays a remarka...

The Show

After a spectacular fourth season (I don't know about you, but I have a really hard time watching John Lithgow in those 3rd Rock from the Sun reruns now), Dexter had a tough act to follow. While I don't dislike season five as much as some fans, I can see where their disappointment comes from - it's a worthwhile go, but the standard was set high and it didn't quite get there.
