Shall We Dance?
Rudy has a crush on her classmate Clarence. During etiquette lessons in her classroom, Rudy partners with Clarence and learns that he likes her too but is confused when he acts abrasive towards her when his friends start teasing him. One day, Clarence knocks Rudy's books out of her hands, and she beats him up. Cliff tries to explain why younger boys act like that but only ends up confusing Rudy.
Isn't It Romantic?
Theo brags to the Huxtable men about his romantic evening with Justine and claims that marriage decreases the romance in a relationship. After Cliff tells a romantic story about taking Clair to a fancy hotel, Elvin, Martin and Cliff make a bet on who can buy or make the most romantic gift for their wives without going over 25 dollars. Olivia tells the wives about the plot, and they vow to be offended by the gifts, until they actually see them: Elvin buys Sondra one pearl and vows to add one every year until she has her dream necklace; Martin gives Denise a time capsule with items from their courtship and wedding; and Cliff gives Clair a bracelet that she wanted when they first started dating as teenagers.
Denise Kendall: Babysitter
Sondra and Elvin complain about the difficulties of raising twins, and Denise thinks that it is no different from raising one child at a time. Denise agrees to babysit the twins with Olivia while Sondra and Elvin go on a date, and chaos ensues when a blackout occurs in the neighborhood.
Theo's Dirty Laundry
Cliff finds a pair of women's underwear in Theo's laundry, and Theo confesses to his parents that Justine is living with him. Both sets of parents are furious with their kids and refuse to help them with rent as long as they live together. Theo and Justine talk about transferring to a cheaper college and getting jobs so they can afford rent but realize that they are moving too fast and honor their parents' wishes. Denise wants to go back to school to become a teacher for children with learning disabilities, but Clair worries that Olivia will not receive proper care from Denise.
Elvin Pays For Dinner
Sondra and Elvin have dinner plans with Elvin's college friend and her sister, but Sondra is busy with her law school applications and tells Elvin to go ahead without her. With Sondra's permission, Elvin stays out late, but when he returns home and asks Sondra to give the Huxtable kids a ride home, she is furious and won't talk to him, especially after learning that he paid for dinner. They consult Cliff and Clair separately for advice and eventually make up.
Cliff arrives home late from the hospital and is starving. He wants to eat a sausage sandwich, but Clair warns him that he will have bad dreams if he eats such heavy food before bed. Cliff doesn't listen to her and ends up having a crazy set of dreams, most of them involving Muppets. When he finally wakes up, he vows to change his diet.
The Day the Spores Landed
Cliff has a vivid dream where spores in the drinking water makes men pregnant, including himself, Elvin, Theo and Martin. The women are insensitive to their plights, and the men all give birth to strange objects. When Cliff wakes up, he tells Clair how much he appreciates what she and all women go through in life.
Off to See the Wretched
Vanessa and her friends plan to sneak off to Baltimore to see a band called 'The Wretched;' they all tell their parents that they are staying the night at Susan's, whose parents are away for the weekend and only her grandmother is around. Kara takes her brother's car without permission, and it is stolen in Delaware. The girls' tickets are stolen outside of the show, and they luckily get a ride home from a friend of Janet's brother. Cliff and Clair find out about Vanessa's lies when they see a news story about a fire near Susan's home; her grandmother is interviewed and states that no one but herself is in the house.
Denise: The Saga Continues
Denise returns from Africa and informs Cliff and Clair that she has married Martin, a Navy officer with a three-year-old daughter (Olivia) from a previous marriage. Martin is about to ship out for three months, so Denise needs to stay at the Huxtables with Olivia. Cliff and Clair are furious but begin to soften when they see Denise might be a good parent to Olivia.
Cliff's Wet Adventure
The Huxtables host a large Thanksgiving dinner for the entire family, and Cliff is charged with going to the market in a vicious storm to buy the food for Clair. He keeps forgetting items and has to go back out in the rain constantly. Martin speaks with his ex-wife Paula, who is stuck at the airport due to the storm. Denise invites her to the house so she can spend time with Olivia and finds out why she and Martin got divorced.
What's It All About?
Clair is assigned a huge case and must work long hours, but she can't focus with all of the distractions around the house. Cliff rents a cabin from his friend for the weekend so Clair can be alone, but a pipe and window breaks, leaving Clair freezing and with no way to get home because there are no trains available until the next day. Clair persuades the lodge manager to take her to the bus station, and she helps Rudy with a history paper when she finally gets home.
Denise Kendall: Navy Wife
Denise and Martin go to Rhode Island to check out their military housing, and when they discover that no house is waiting for them, Denise confesses that she forgot to call and confirm while Martin was away. They have to go back on the waiting list and will not get a home for another six months; they are forced to impose on the Huxtables after Martin's mom will not allow them to stay at her house because she thinks Denise is flaky.
Rudy's teacher Mrs. McGee calls Cliff and Clair to tell them that Rudy and her classmate George have been tasked with creating a dance routine as part of a class presentation about the 1920s. Rudy is hesitant about the assignment because George is a talented dancer, so Clair signs her up for dance classes. Cliff gets into a dance-off with the instructor, Mr. Sims, and Rudy greatly improves.
Clair meets with her lawyer friend Bernadette in the hopes of arranging a settlement to prevent the closing of a community center's playground. The Huxtables' neighbor Jeffrey undergoes a series of lifestyle changes after his wife leaves him so he can feel more spontaneous, including wearing a toupee. Bernadette meets Jeffrey and instantly likes him, but Jeffrey is afraid that she only likes him because of his new lifestyle choices.
Grampy and Nu-Nu Visit the Huxtables
Martin's parents come to town to meet the Huxtables, and Denise is terrified because Mrs. Kendall does not like Denise. When the Kendalls arrive, Denise hides in the kitchen and runs off crying. Clair confronts Mrs. Kendall and learns that it is Martin who upsets her because of his flakiness, not Denise. Denise and Mrs. Kendall patch things up and turn the tables on Martin.
Cliff la Dolce
Clair travels to Washington, D.C. for a conference, leaving Cliff alone with the girls since Denise is visiting Martin in the Caribbean. Vanessa has plans to sneak out to a college party but is foiled when trying to trick Cliff. Rudy is having problems with her friends at school, and when she seeks Cliff's advice, it only makes things worse. Theo takes Olivia with him to a cafe so he can impress one of the waitresses.
Not Everybody Loves the Blues
Theo is worried about his relationship with Justine because she is talking about going to grad school. Theo and Elvin go to a Riley Jackson concert, and Theo is shocked to see Riley at the Huxtable home later; Riley is an old friend of Cliff's parents and came over to see Cliff. Theo talks to his parents about Justine, and they tell him to take things slow and to stop worrying so much.
Cliff's great aunt Gramtee comes to town to celebrate her 98th birthday. Gramtee embarrasses Cliff with stories from his childhood and wows the Huxtable children with stories of her relatives who lived during times of slavery. The family is going to church after the birthday party, but Olivia doesn't want to go after a friend invites her to the zoo. After spending time with Gramtee, Olivia decides to go to church with the family.
The Birthday Party
The Huxtable family hosts Olivia's 4th birthday party. Olivia's friends come over and immediately start running wild while Denise prepares the food. Cliff is left to watch the kids while Martin runs to the video store. The kids sneak into the basement and eat a chocolate cake. Denise and Martin give Olivia Rudy's old tricycle and explain that this is their way of accepting her into the Huxtable family.
I'm 'In' With the 'In' Crowd
Vanessa goes to her friend Susan's house for an all-girls party, and they start to play drinking games with alcohol they find in the house. Vanessa gets very drunk, and Denise picks her up from Susan's and sneaks her into the house. Susan's mom calls Clair and informs her of the party, but Cliff and Clair do not punish Vanessa because the hangover is a good enough lesson.
Theo studies hard for an exam and is discouraged when he once again receives a poor grade. Theo goes to a testing center and is diagnosed with dyslexia. He is given some tips on how to deal with his condition, and his grades start to improve.
Cliff buys a refrigerator for Theo's apartment and is upset to learn that Clair has visited without him because Theo is embarrassed when Cliff tells long stories to his friends. Cliff goes to the apartment and impresses Theo and his friends with his cool stories about his college days. Theo and the guys decide to reenact one of the stories, which ends up getting them evicted. When Theo is forced to move back in with his parents, Cliff pleads with the landlord and offers him more money to let the boys return.
Denise Kendall: Singles Counselor
Vanessa sees a cute guy when she is at a cafe with Denise but is afraid to approach him. After advice from Denise, Vanessa is able to talk to him. Denise tells Clair that she thinks she could be a singles counselor, until an angry Vanessa comes home and tells Denise that the boy, Elliott, forgot to mention that he has a girlfriend. Elliott comes to the house to tell Vanessa that he is going to break up with his girlfriend, but then the girlfriend (Shayna) shows up and Elliott ends up losing both girls.
Live and Learn
Denise is frustrated that her new choice for a college will only accept one transfer credit from her previous coursework at Hillman. Denise is impressed by the alternative teaching methods Olivia's teacher uses and thinks she does not need to go back to school. She asks Olivia's teacher if she can be his teaching assistant, but he tells her that she needs a master's degree. Denise surprises Cliff and Clair by enrolling at Medgar Evers College as a freshman.
Getting to Know You
Cliff and Martin spend time together while the women go shopping. They bond over Navy stories, and Cliff is happy that Denise married a good man. The women buy Elvin an elf costume to wear when he visits sick children at the hospital; he is reluctant at first but eventually has a lot of fun. The Huxtables plan an impromptu wedding ceremony at the house for Denise and Martin so Cliff can officially give Denise away.
Rudy's Walk on the Wild Side
Rudy wants to buy a new shirt but doesn't have enough money. She asks Clair for a raise in her allowance, but this proves unsuccessful. Kenny offer to give her the money in exchange for her autographed Magic Johnson poster, but he does not deliver and is forced to give the poster back. Rudy secretly takes Clair's dry-cleaning money, and Clair goes crazy trying to find it. Cliff discovers what Rudy did and tells her to come clean to Clair.
