Katy Perry & Emma Stone Were Big Winners At 2012 People's Choice Awards

January 12th, 2012 8:24am EST
Emma Stone
It was a huge night for Katy Perry at the People's Choice Awards in Los Angeles on Wednesday - even though the pop star's marriage break-up prevented her from attending.

The I Kissed a Girl star pulled out of the event earlier this week via a tweet but it was still very much her night as she picked up five awards, including one for her guest spot on TV comedy How I Met Your Mother.

Perry also claimed trophies for Favorite Female Artist, Favorite Song of the Year (E.T.), Favorite Music Video (Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)) and Favorite Tour Headliner.

It was also a great evening for the ...

What's this?!? There is some accounting for taste?!? Downton Abbey's Season 2 premiere averaged 4.2 million viewers.

Nielsen data on Tuesday showed that the Emmy-winning series' return Sunday night doubled the average PBS prime-time rating, and marked an 18 percent jump over the show's first-season average — which made PBS ecstatic.

Desperate Housewives
With the new fall season starting in September, a lot of TV on DVD titles have turned out over the last few months to help fans catch up with favorite shows. I do mean a lot. So many that it'd be a deluge of reviews if we were to write them all up individually. To keep from drowning you in print, but still keep you up to date, here's a quick look at many of the new titles that have arrived recently.

ABC is releasing the third season of ABC hit series "Castle." The series is all about the will-they--or-won't-they chemistry between the two romantic leads, played by Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic.

In season three, fictional crime novelist Richard Castle confessed his love to his partner, Detective Kate Beckett (Katic) after she was struck by an assassin’s bullet at Captain Roy Mongtomery’s (Ruben Santiago-Hudson) funeral.

Special features of season three include:

- A roundtable featuring Nathan Fillion, New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly and more

Wishes Of A Television-aholic: 'Castle'

July 28th, 2011 7:30pm EDT
Fillion, Katic
This television-aholic loves shows that construct their own unique, heightened reality with eccentric characters and a moving combination of drama and angst and comedy. This is why I have been a fan of ABC’s “Castle,” starring Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic, since the very beginning. The cases can be hokey, clichéd and easy to solve, but "Castle" is all about the will-they-won’t-they chemistry between the two romantic leads.

Last season, Richard Castle, my favorite fictional crime novelist played to whimsical perfection by Fillion, confessed his love to his partner, Detective Kate Bec...

Who Aced The 2010-11 TV Season? (Hint: It's Not NBC)

June 4th, 2011 3:30pm EDT
The Voice
The 2010-2011 TV season is officially over. The ratings are in. If there is one surprise, it’s that last year’s top five shows were all up in viewers this year. With hefty viewer erosion in recent years, that’s nothing short of a miracle.

Most other veteran shows, however, saw a drop-off in viewers. There are some exceptions, however, such as ‘Modern Family,’ which saw very healthy ratings in its second year, particularly in the 18-49 demo.

The stats didn’t change much from last year. CBS won the season in total viewers with 11.6 million. It’s the eighth time in nine years the netwo...

Castle doesn’t normally make me cry (it’s a light-hearted “dramady” starring Nathan Fillion, after all!), but last night it did. As always, spoilers abound--bigger and more intense spoilers than ever before.

Remember Hal Lockwood? He was the professional killer that pulled the trigger on Beckett’s mother all those years ago. Beckett put him in jail earlier this season, but Beckett promised Lockwood that she would interview him every week and continue to ask him who hired him to kill her mother. “Knockout” picks up as Beckett makes her weekly journey to the prison to interview Lockwood. What To Watch: Viewers Finally Learn Which ‘Glee’ Cast Member They Will Say Goodbye To Forever (May 15-21, 2011)

May 15th, 2011 11:15am EDT
The number one thing you need to watch this week is “Glee” because after months of speculation, viewers will finally find out which cast member they will say goodbye to forever. That’s right; in case you haven’t heard, one of McKinley High’s own will face an unexpected loss. Cast and crew have been tight-lipped about who is dying, but viewer guesses include Sue’s sister, Puck and Quinn’s daughter, or Kurt’s dad. Of course, this doesn’t mean it couldn’t be one of the regular cast members; ugh, I cringed at the thought!

Mike Royce, Beckett’s former mentor returned last night on Castle! For those who had forgotten, in Royce’s last episode, he turned out to be a dirty cop that took bribes and impeded Beckett’s progress on a case. She was also in love with him, so his betrayal was especially harsh. Royce drags himself across pavement while an ominous man stalks him with a gun and a silencer. The man shoots Royce.

Jump ahead to the crime scene: Captain Montgomery looks grim, Castle looks unsure and Beckett just looks sad. No one wants Beckett to see Royce’s body, but she’s made of tougher stuff and she wants ...

All these wonderful changes herald the most beloved and bittersweet time of year for this lover of pop culture: May sweeps. Anatomy Of A TV Season: The Hits & Misses

April 15th, 2011 12:00pm EDT
Kathy Bates
It’s almost May Sweeps, and season finales will be upon us faster than the networks can cancel soaps. Let’s break it down, network by network, of what succeeded – and what flopped – this TV season.

NBC

Let’s start with the weakest network. After the ‘Jay Leno Show’ debacle last season, NBC is still scrambling to find original programming that will net decent ratings.

‘Law & Order: Los Angeles’ has proved a disappointment, as evidenced by its massive overhaul and return to floundering ratings. The comedy ‘Outsourced’ is on the bubble, and shows such as ‘Chase’ and ‘Undercovers’ bombed ...

If there’s one thing the Olympics taught us, it’s that the competitive world of swimming is cutthroat, fierce, and populated with attractive men. ‘The Dead Pool’ starts with a young swimmer doing what he does best. Suddenly a dark figure approaches him. Cut to Castle, discussing his young writer friend Alex Conrad who is going to be in town. Castle wants Alex to follow him and Beckett around. Predictably, Beckett is not into this scenario at all. My prediction: Beckett is going to be charmed by Alex. Or Alex is actually the murderer.

Castle and Beckett arrive at the crime scene. The swimme...

'Castle' Recap: 3x20 - 'Slice Of Death' Combines Pizza, Drugs And Film Noir

“Slice of Death” opens with a body reveal worthy of Bones. A man and woman stumble into a restaurant, kissing passionately. The woman squeals a requisite “I have to tweet this” to inform us that the man she’s currently making out with is some sort of celebrity. She refers to him as “Terrific Nick,” but he corrects her: “Authentic Nick.” Seeing as this is New York, they can only be one place: a pizza restaurant. The girl comments on the (wonderful) smell in the restaurant. They investigate and discover (gross) a body in the pizza oven. Cut to (grosser) Castle frying bacon for Alexis.

If last week’s episode was an homage to soap operas, this week was all Law and Order all the time. Joe Mcusic, a jury member, drops dead from cyanide poisoning in the middle of court. The case he was sitting on was the high profile murder of a socialite. While Castle and Beckett untangle the juror murder, Castle has to deal with the ramifications of snooping on Alexis’ phone and her consequential loss of trust.

Beckett and Castle meet the victim’s brother, and we learn more about his background. He was a former juvenile offender who ran a half-way house to help others pick up their lives. ...

'Castle' Recap: 2x18 - 'One Life To Lose' (Lovingly) Mocks Soap Operas

The most exciting part of “One Life to Lose” was that Jane Seymour (or as she was referred to in my house while I was growing up, Dr. Quinn) guest starred. The second most exciting part is the entire episode centered around the gruesome murder of the head writer on “Temptation Lane,” the soapiest soap opera of all time.

The first scene set up the episode to a T: a young, attractive woman is in bed with her older suitor. As they kiss, her (dashing, European) husband comes home. When the young attractive woman opens the closet door to hide her older, distinguished (read: graying) lover, a ...

ABC Renews Six Shows For Next Season

In an early vote of confidence, ABC renewed six series for next season. None of the choices is particularly surprising since none were on the bubble. The shows are:

‘Grey’s Anatomy’

‘Cougar Town’

‘Private Practice’

‘Modern Family’

‘The Middle’

‘Castle’

Missing from the list? ‘Desperate Housewives,’ said to be held up by contract negotiations, but expect it to be back. Any series not on this list does not mean ABC will not renew it; the network has until May to make final decisions, and sometimes it goes down to the wire. Stay tuned.

‘Castle’ Recap: The Doctor’s In The…Casket?

October 19th, 2010 10:50am EDT
Castle, Beckett Season 3
Last night’s Castle episode “Anatomy of a Murder” had more twists and turns than Chubby Checker driving on a switchback mountain road during an earthquake. Yeah. It was intense, but managed to keep the humor.

The episode started with a scene at a Jewish funeral. When a bevy of pallbearers tried to lift and move the suspiciously heavy casket, it dropped, revealing that it was holding not one, but two dead bodies. Gross.

One of those bodies was that of Dr. Monroe, a female doctor who, as we find out later with the help of Detective Kate Beckett, her team and Castle, was hired by an NYPD det...

'Castle' Recap: Of Psychic Proportions

September 28th, 2010 11:11am EDT
Castle and Beckett, season 3
In last night's episode, "He's Dead, She's Dead," a famous psychic named Vivienne was a murder victim, found dead, stuffed in her couch by her own daughter. Suffice it to say she probably should have seen this coming (zing!). Oh wait. Did she?

Castle (Nathan Fillion) thought so, as he tested, often annoyingly, Beckett’s (Stana Katic) skepticism about fate, psychics and the paranormal. Of course, Beckett and her team weren’t having that, as they are detectives who live by concrete evidence and logical explanations, and thus are, by default, skeptics.

Turns out that this Vivienne wasn’t as ...

'Castle' Recap: He's Back (Whew!)

Castle Season 1 Image
Occasional Castle viewers know that the ABC show is a crime detective/comedy series with a least one victim, one murderer, and a case to solve. But for us real Castle fans, we know that heart of the show is the comedy and romantic tension between the two main characters, crime novelist Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) and NYPD Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic). And, oh, was the tension ever so thick in last night's season three premiere.

If you forgot, Beckett was kinda sorta dating a robbery detective (Tom Denning) in the last few episodes of last year's wonderful season. Clearly, Castl...

Warehouse 13: In the fist season, the show about two Secret Service agents hunting down artifacts capable of everything from passing through solid objects to seeing the future, really overdid the "will they/ won’t they" relationship between business-like Myka Bering (Joanne Kelly) and free-spirited Pete Lattimer (Eddie McClintock). And yeah, some of you out there are saying "Hey, they stole that from Castle, and Castle stole it from Bones," ignoring that X-Files did the exact same type of relationship and did it much better over a decade before any of them. But, I digress.
