Hank Is A 'Disasterpiece' in Californication

January 14th, 2013 11:23am EST
c
The hit Showtime series, Californication is back for its sixth season with an amazing lineup of guest stars (like Marilyn Manson) and more comedic dark struggles for Hank Moody (played by Golden Globe winner David Duchovny), whom we have unfortunately grown to love.

The first episode begins when Hank wakes up in the hospital after his ex, Carrie, unsuccessfully tried to kill him with a deadly ‘you broke my heart, you son-of-a b&*$%’ cocktail. Sadly, she also had a taste of her own medicine and will not be waking up ever again from her booze induced ride on the crazy train. Only in his drea...

Showtime Sunday Nights Return with 'Shameless,' 'House of Lies,' 'Californication'

January 13th, 2013 9:00am EST
Shameless
Showtime is the channel to be watching on Sunday nights. After the nail-biting returns of Dexter and Homeland, the premium cabler is now bringing the laughs with new seasons of Shameless, House of Lies, and Californication, starting tonight.

All three shows have some element of people behaving badly, whether it's Frank Gallagher's lack of parenting or Hank Moody's ever-growing list of flings. That concept works better for some shows than it does others. Season six of Californication is the same debauchery with a different theme. After trying the film world in season four, this time around ...

Shameless, House of Lies and Californication will be back for new seasons next year, thanks to an early season renewal from Showtime.

The cable network renewed Shameless for a third season and Californication for a sixth. House of Lies, which debuted with 3.98 million viewers in its premiere week, will return for season two.

Dexter remains Showtime's biggest ratings pull, but Shameless holds steady in second place, averaging 4.7 million viewers per week, once DVR and rerun airings are factored in. The show is up 30 percent in overall viewership since last year, when the premiere pulled i...

Q&A: 'Love In The Wild' Host Darren McMullen

August 10th, 2011 3:11pm EDT
Love In The Wild
Dating is hard enough, but then to throw nature into the mix seems downright insane. That's the premise of NBC's Love In The Wild. Backstage at America's Got Talent, the show's host, Darren McMullen, talked with me recently about the scary perils of nature and his interest in reality television (including our mutual affection for one show in particular!)

We've seen dating shows before, but this is a particularly weird concept for one.

Oh, I could probably think of a weirder one, but it's good. It seems to work. We have legitimate couples going on, which is more than can be said for a lot ...

Inside Showtime's Adult Thursday Night Lineup

April 6th, 2011 3:00pm EDT
Secret Diary of a Call Girl
Starting tomorrow, Showtime is rolling out an explicitly adult lineup on late-night Thursdays - one that puts the "adults only" mythos back into premium cable.

The evening begins with the final season of Secret Diary of a Call Girl (10:30 PM ET/PT). It's the end of the road for Hannah/Belle (Billie Piper, who will always be Rose Tyler from Doctor Who to me). Now in charge of things since former madam Stephanie is behind bars, Hannah/Belle has to take a look at her life and decide what she wants out of it, especially since she's also entering into a romantic relationship with her best ...

'Californication' Finale: Is Hank Heading To The Big House?

David Duchovny and Carla Gugino, Californication | Photo
Now that Californication's Hank Moody has been convicted of statutory rape, it's time for him to face the music.

Sunday's season finale (9/8c on Showtime) finds Hank (David Duchovny) awaiting his sentencing, and the outcome floors him. But you shouldn't necessarily expect the show's next season to resemble Oz.

With Hank's secret revealed, how much Californication is left?

"The consequences were never about the true legal repercussions," creator and executive producer Tom Kapinos tells TVGuide.com...

Friday at the TCAs (Television Critics Association) was devoted to CBS and its two sister networks, Showtime and The CW. 'Californication' Season 4 Advance Review

January 8th, 2011 7:08pm EST
Californication
My Showtime preview concludes today with a look at season four of Californication, which debuts tomorrow on the premium network along with Episodes and Shameless.

A friend of mine once told me that she thought David Duchovny was a one-trick pony. I had to agree with her; I loved him in his now-iconic role as Special Agent Fox Mulder on The X-Files, but then I saw the absolutely dreadful Evolution and couldn't believe I was watching the same actor. Even in the second X-Files feature, he seemed at times to be simply going through the motions. To me, his performance here feels like a versi...

What Can We Expect To See In Season 4 Of 'Californication'?

January 6th, 2011 10:29am EST
Californication Season 4
So, “Californication” is returning soon, and everyone’s favorite blind-in-one-eye leading man David Duchovny reprises his role as the perpetually creatively-blocked novelist Hank Moody. And I bet you real money he’s going to be having sex with people this season. Lots of sex. That he’ll feel bad about later.

Actually, that’s the entirety of “Californication.” Hank Moody has sex, feels bad about it later, then does it again. But gosh if he isn’t just so darn loveable.

I know the show is about that cycle. I know the show is supposed to be about how Hank Moody is a sex addict, and how he’s t...

Returning Mid-Season Shows: What's Worth Watching?

The new 'American Idol'
We’ve already been over what new shows are premiering mid-season. There are lots of returning favorites as well, and some promise to be some of this year’s highest-rated programs. Others are sure to be stinkers. Here’s our guide to what’s returning, and what’s worth watching.

‘V’ – ABC, Jan. 4

Starring Elizabeth Mitchell (‘LOST’) as FBI agent Erica Evans and Morena Baccarin as the leader of the visitors, this season kicks off after a long hiatus. ABC calls it “a show we’d like to run as uninterrupted as possible.” Time will tell if the long wait has dented the show’s audience. Anyo...

I'll be previewing all three for you over the next few days, beginning with Shameless, which you may have seen when the network previewed twenty minutes of its first episode after the Dexter finale.

In case you didn't, though, here's the gist: it's yet another American version of a British television series. The original has a pretty impressive pedigree - it was created, produced and partially written by Paul Abbott, who's responsible for some ...

Remote Control Battle: TV Both Men And Women May Enjoy Together

November 16th, 2009 9:00pm EST
Remote Control Battle
A Woman's Perspective: Remember when sitcoms used to make jokes about how men and women watch television differently? The sloppy, somewhat aloof husband character would always be zooming through the channels, flicking the remote faster than his perky, pretty, younger wife could keep up. She'd then snatch the remote and pause on each channel achingly slowly, narrating not only what was occurring in the scene on screen but also what she hoped or thought would occur next.

Not only did men and women watch differently, though, what they watched was always assumed to be different. Men had the...

Emmy Nomination Surprises, Snubs And Shouldn't Be Nominated

To paraphrase Ned Flanders, apparently an Emmy nomination is easier to get than an acceptance letter from Arizona State.

This morning, Emmy tried to one-up Oscar's new rule of ten by including six nominees in the acting categories and a whopping seven in the series categories. Yes, if you made a television series this year, or appeared on one, chances are you heard your name called in North Hollywood this morning.

With so many nominess, it seems impossible that any deserving performances or series were left out. Right? Sadly, no. And, of course, there are plenty of nominees who sh...
