HBO Sets 'Game Of Thrones' Season 4 Premiere Date, Cancels 'Boardwalk Empire'

January 9th, 2014 10:53pm EST
Game of Thrones
HBO has finally set a date for the return of hit series Game of Thrones.

Season four is set to kick off on Sunday, April 6, and the pay-TV network will air the first promo for the show this Sunday night before new series True Detective, which stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.

Season four will cover the second half of the third book in author George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" fantasy series, and fans who have read the books know that there are plenty of big events on the way to follow-up last season's shocking "Red Wedding" episode.

But with the good news comes th...

'Boardwalk Empire' Season 4 Finale: Well Wrapped

November 25th, 2013 8:28am EST
Boardwalk Empire
The Boardwalk Empire season 4 finale tied all the jangling ends, with an episode that left one memorable character dead, and, against all odds, Nucky's family still intact.

Eli tells Nucky he has no family, as Nucky almost maybe was about to kill Eli.  But the arrival of Nucky's nephew Willie not only stays Nucky's hand, but in so doing proves that Nucky does have a family.  Nucky's not going to kill his own brother in front of his brother's son, Nucky's nephew.  It was a memorable scene.

And so was the way it turned out that Eli did the killing, to wit, that Federal guy who pushed Eli ju...

'Boardwalk Empire' Review 4.11: Nucky On The Beach

November 18th, 2013 8:41am EST
Boardwalk Empire
A powerful  Boardwalk Empire 4.11 last night, with no less than three stories receiving sizzling treatment, only one of which is resolved.

Let's start with the resolution.   We knew there was something not quite right about Jillian's beau - I could feel it in my bones, not to mention the snippet of the conversation we caught him having on the phone.  I thought for a brief few minutes that maybe I was wrong.   But few if any people live happily ever after on this show.   So after he "killed" the guy in the garage, and Gillian began pouring out her heart and history to him, it occurred to me...

'Boardwalk Empire' Season 4 Episode 10: Family Treachery

November 11th, 2013 8:20am EST
Boardwalk Empire
Family treachery - the disloyalty of family members to the boss - has been a staple in crime drama movies, presented to greatest effect in The Godfather (I and II) and Casino.   Episode 4.10 looks like it's bringing Boardwalk Empire into that territory.

Eli is caught in the perfect storm, or the agonizing space between a rock and a hard place.   He wants to save his son.  He'll do just about anything towards that end.  But the last thing he wants to do is betray Nucky, especially after Nucky took him  back - somewhat unbelievably - the last time.  It was a little hard to believe that Nucky...

This is a real hit-the-fan episode, bursting with gunplay, verbal confrontations, great lines, and surprising, unholy alliances.

First, on the death count - lots of peripherals killed, and two major characters are in deadly peril from bullets.   I won't tell you their names, because you'd know tha...

'Boardwalk Empire' Review: Season 4 Episode 9: The Imbecile

November 4th, 2013 9:26am EST
Boardwalk Empire
The funniest line in Boardwalk Empire 4.9 - maybe in this entire season - comes when Nucky calls Mickey Doyle an "imbecile," as he's negotiating with Rothstein over who will collect on Doyle's life insurance after he's taken out.  Long overdue - the appellation and the hit - which didn't yet happen tonight.

But there were hits galore in Chicago.  Van Alden gives it to his tormenters from the company he worked for, when they come after him to teach him a lesson.  Torrio's guys give it to O'Bannion, as history records, before Van Alden has a chance to deliver (or maybe that was part of the p...

'Boardwalk Empire' 4.8: Knives In The Back

October 28th, 2013 8:34am EDT
Boardwalk Empire
I think my favorite scene in Boardwalk Empire 4.8 is when tears well up in Chalky's eyes as Maitland sings to him.  Those tears would be the turning point in their relationship so far, a turning point that would save Chalky's life.

It was those tears that no doubt got Maitland to realize that she cared too much about Chalky to let him be killed by Narcisse's man Purnsley.   First she tries to get Chalky to leave.  Then, in the pivotal instant, she stabs Purnsley in the back, which saves Chalky's life.

That stab in the back was a work of art.  Purnsley has in effect stabbed Chalky in the b...

Boardwalk Empire - this one of 4.8 - courtesy of screeners from Starpulse, guaranteed to be specific spoiler free, and to be followed this Sunday with a proper recap/review right after the episode has aired in New York City, just up the road from A.C.

Music played a bigger than usual role in episode 4.8, especially with Maitland doing some fine singing, which Chalky tells Nucky is "the blues".   But the show ends with a 1920s version of Lonnie Donegan's "Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor on the Bedpost Overnight," sung in Eli's home, on into the closing credits, and providing a great c...

'Boardwalk Empire' Recap 4.7: Family And History

October 21st, 2013 8:21am EDT
Boardwalk Empire
Probably the best scenes in Boardwalk Empire 4.7 - and there were many of them in this episode - were with Nucky, Eli, and Willie.  Nucky wisely stays in the background when Eli and Willie first have it out about Willie's quitting college, but intervenes when things get physical between father and son.  This leads to a key conversation between Nucky and Eli, in which Eli lashes out that "nothing" has come from Nucky - meaning, Nucky has no children.   Eli's aggravation is understandable, and Nucky, for his part, agrees that college is the best path for Willie, but Eli's outburst is unfortun...

We get one killing at the beginning of 4.7 - a bullet in the head - but it's of someone we've seen for the first time, as far as I know.  Of far more importance to history and our continuing story is the go-ahead that someone gets near the end of the episode to eliminate a major supporting character...

'Boardwalk Empire' Review: 4.6: Sally and Margaret

October 14th, 2013 8:56am EDT
Boardwalk Empire
A satisfying Boardwalk Empire 4.6 tonight, in which finally get to see Margaret and hear what she's been up to, as well as Nucky in another scene down in Florida and up against the wall with Sally.

Margaret hasn't been up to much - or, at very least, what's she's been up to hasn't been very interesting. The most memorable part of her conversation with Nucky were historically enjoyable - to us - mentions of the IRT (Interboro Rapid Transit subway line) and the Loew's King movie theater in New York City. I still use the IRT on occasion, and visited one Loew's or another many occasions when I...

Episode 4.6 is a good and even great regrouping episode - a resetting of the table after the death of Eddie, whose untimely and cruel departure is felt in almost every scene, and explicitly discussed in many. And appropriate to the deaths last week, we take a breather from death this coming Sunday.

'Boardwalk Empire' 4.5: Two Deaths

October 7th, 2013 8:50am EDT
Boardwalk Empire
Boardwalk Empire's 4.5 last night brought us two deaths - one, not unexpected, given what we know from real history - the other totally unexpected, because it was of a character for whom there is no record, but for whom most viewers including me have had great affection.

Eddie has been a staple on the series from the beginning, an epitome of loyalty for Nucky in a world in which even his own family often failed to come through for him. Why the show runners chose to write Eddie off the series beats me.  The usual reasons range from the actor leaving to the producers wanting to put someone e...

There were two deaths in this episode - one of them heartbreaking.

Rage was the theme. Nucky talks to Willie, prepping him about what to say when the authorities look into his role in Henry's death. Willie tells Nucky how angry he was at Henry. Nucky tells him his rage is a gift, and if he's able t...

'Boardwalk Empire' Season 4 Episode 4: Bullies And Betrayals

September 29th, 2013 10:00pm EDT
Boardwalk Empire
Few ended up with smiles on their faces in Boardwalk Empire 4.4 - which made it a more grim than usual episode, but also one which moved the story along quite well and to unexpected places.

Perhaps the biggest shock was the unexpected arrest of Eddie at the end. J. Edgar Hoover, who's moving into a position as Nucky's #1 governmental adversary, is tasking his Feds to crack down on organized crime. Something is not 100% right about Eddie, anyway, and Nucky has been lacing his sarcasm with an almost tenderness towards his main valet and aide-de-camp. This means that Nucky will be especially ...

Episode 4.4 is a darker than usual show, in which almost nothing ends up well for the characters on center stage. Murder, humiliation, betrayal, and arrest by the Feds are the fates our characters encounter.

'Boardwalk Empire' 4.3: Nucky, Sunshine, And Heroin

September 23rd, 2013 7:40am EDT
Boardwalk Empire
A nice change of pace for Boardwalk Empire 4.3 tonight, with Nucky out of his natural haunts in the northeast, and down to sunny Florida for an important business proposition.

It's fun to see Nucky out his element, and away from the people and locales that usually surround him. He's more relaxed - though he declines his host's offer of a woman for the night - and he seems more in control.   This is a cool, on top of it Nucky, someone we haven't quite seen before.

Nucky's decline of female companionship raises the question of what's happened to Margaret, who has yet to make an appearance o...

We accompany Nucky on his visit to Florida - honey, sunny, and ... well, you get the rhyming picture, as his host, seeking Nucky's money, encouragingly tells him is all readily available.  Nucky is no big fan of the sun, but he'll happily take just about everything else that rhymes.  But Nucky proves to be a...

'Boardwalk Empire' Season 4 Episode 2: J. Edgar

September 16th, 2013 9:19am EDT
Boardwalk Empire
It's always a treat in an historical drama to encounter a figure, early in life, whom we came to know later in life as a mover and a shaker.   Boardwalk Empire provided such a perk in episode 4.2, with the introduction of J. Edgar Hoover, a federal anti-crime guy in 1924, head of its Bureau of Investigation, on his way to being head of its successor the FBI straight through the Nixon administration until Hoover's demise in 1972.

As such, Hoover was more powerful in some ways than the Presidents he served.  His FBI undoubtedly collected dirt on the Kennedys, Martin Luther King Jr., and all ...

'Boardwalk Empire' Season 4 Premiere Recap: Fame And Power

September 9th, 2013 10:05am EDT
Boardwalk Empire
A good, atmospheric return of Boardwalk Empire with episode 4.1 tonight, with stories in Atlantic City and Chicago that start the pressure cookers simmering.

My favorite was actually in Chicago, where Al Capone gets upset over a story about him in the paper. He has two points of grievance.  He was called "factotum" in Johnny Torrio's organization, and the story spelled his name wrong.   This harkens back to George M. Cohan's quip that "I don't care what you say about me, as long as you say something about me, and as long as you spell my name right" - because, in Al's case, they didn't spel...

Hey, I just saw Boardwalk Empire 4.1 - courtesy of a screener provided to me by Starpulse - so herewith is a strictly nonspoiler review, with a proper recap/review to follow after the episode actually airs on HBO tomorrow night.

Fans of the ambience won't be disappointed.  You'll see people complaining about radio reception - which after all was still new in those halcyon days - and a reporter pounding on a manual typewriter. There's tap dancing and a little Busby Berkeley-type choreography on stage.  There's plenty of frontal nudity, and some sex to go along with it.
