Sequel To Mark Burnett's Hit Miniseries 'The Bible' Heading To NBC

Mark Burnett's hugely successful History Channel epic miniseries The Bible is getting a sequel.

NBC confirmed on Monday that the TV producer has signed a deal to bring "A.D.: Beyond The Bible" to the network after outbidding the History Channel for the rights to the planned sequel.

The series will take place following the death of Jesus Christ and chronicle the beginnings of Christianity.

"I followed the development process of The Bible closely with Mark and knew that the story was far from over after Christ's crucifixion," said Bob Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment.

History Channel's 'The Bible' To Head To The Big Screen

History Channel's "The Bible" was such a success that it's heading to the big screen. The 10-part mini series broke records when it aired earlier this year, and executive producer Mark Burnett has announced a big-screen film is to follow.

The movie, expected to be three-hours long, will be based on the resurrection of Christ, which was also included in the mini series.

Burnett told the Hollywood Reporter: "We're cutting a movie version right now, a three-hour version of Jesus and (we have) many, many offers from theatres globally."

The History Channel's 10-hour miniseries The Bible came under fire Monday morning because Moroccan actor Mohamen Mehdi Ouazanni, who was introduced as Satan in the series' third episode Sunday night, happens to look a little bit like U.S. President Barack Obama.

TV Ratings: 'The Bible' Dominates On The History Channel

It was kind of a ho-hum week, ratings-wise, on the broadcast networks. Not so with cable, with History Channel’s ‘The Bible’ snagging a whopping 13 million viewers. If included in broadcast rankings, the miniseries would have ranked 4th for the week.

AMC’s ‘The Walking Dead,’ meanwhile, continues to scare up viewers. It  logged 11.3 million viewers, which would be good to crack the top 10.
