While the cable networks still lag far behind the broadcast networks in the ratings department (well, four of them anyway), they have made great strides in terms of matching, and often times exceeding, the big dogs when it comes to quality original programming.
At no time of the year is this trend more evident than in the summer. While the broadcast networks are unsurprisingly going with a bevy of unscripted fare (including entirely too many reality competition shows), the cable networks are once again proving to be the place to turn for quality, original, SCRIPTED programming.

For its 2008-09 schedule, Lifetime Network has unveiled a diverse development slate in all genres, including original comedies, all with top talent in front of and behind the cameras.

Catherine Bell Takes Flying Lessons
Actress Catherine Bell is making the most of the free time the Hollywood writers strike has allowed her - she's learning to fly. The star's TV show Army Wives is among the programs shut down by the strike, which began in November.
But Bell is refusing to sit around waiting to get back to work and has been soaring high in an effort to become the latest celebrity pilot.
She says, "Who knows? I may become a pilot for a commercial airline."

Saluting the highest-rated series in the network's 23-year history, Lifetime has ordered a second season of the smash hit "Army Wives," it was announced today at the TCA Press Tour by Susanne Daniels, President, Entertainment, Lifetime Networks.
Eighteen episodes have been ordered for the new season, which will premiere in the Spring of 2008. "Army Wives" airs Sundays at 10PM (ET/PT).
